Simple past
Simple past is a verbal tense used to talk about events that happened in an
established moment in the past with a non-existent relationship with the
present. Past simple may be defined as a tense already finished with any
relationship with the present. For example:
With simple past we use When...? and How long...? to ask questions about
time and duration of happenings that took place in past:
Present perfect is a verbal tense used to talk about events that happened in a
precise moment in the past and whose relationship with the present is still
having an effect on it. Present perfect may be defined as a tense whose action
started in past and its happenings may affect the present. For example:
They may be used as well to talk about an action or situation that started
in past and it is still in the present.
In general, present perfect is accompanied with the following adverbs: Just, still,
already, ever, never, recently and lately. For example:
- We have just signed this important contract.
