Team-Building & Teaching-Learning Workshop

THEME : MAKING LEARNING INTERESTING

1. Objectives of the Workshop

At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:

a. Be aware of the need for communicating well with each other and to work
collectively to improve working relationship,
b. Use key classroom management principles and strategies to improve the
learning environment,
c. Be aware of how children learn,
d. Apply 1H5W methodology to improve students critical thinking skills, and
e. Understand the principles and practice of Active Learning and apply them
in the classroom.

2. Outline of Workshop Contents

a. Team-building : Improving communication at work and realising importance


of team spirit.
b. Understanding how children learn : Learning Objectives & Teaching
Methods
c. Teaching Critical Thinking : Applying 1H5W Questions
d. Active Learning: : What is it about? How to go about it?
e. The Way Forward: The Flip Class - making homework work in class
f. Preparing Teaching Resources Principles and practice
g. Micro-Teaching Teachers will prepare and teach 15-minute lessons
h. Wrap-up : Implementing active learning in school plans for 2017.

3. What Teachers Need to Bring Along to the Workshop?

a. Most important : Bring an OPEN MIND.


b. Bring copies of the Sukatan Perlajaran (either Primary or Secondary) of
two subjects you will be teaching in 2017.
c. Bring copies of textbooks you will be using for the two subjects mentioned
in b above.

4. What Teachers need to do before attending the Workshop?

Please check your email based on the email addresses you have given to the
school (Mdm Wong or Ms Lee). I will be sending you some information in the
next two weeks. You will have to do some homework before coming for the
Workshop.

5. What the School Need to Prepare and Bring Along?
(Attn: Pn Adeline Wong & Ms Lee Gaik Fong)

a. Extra marker/white board pens : Red, black and blue colours (6 of each)
b. If the hotel cannot supply extra flip-chart papers, bring along one roll of
flip-chart papers.
c. One (1) ream of white A4 photocopy papers.
d. Ask hotel to provide 4 flip-chart stands.

THEME : MAKING LEARNING INTERESTING

1.1 Ice-breaker & Team-Building - Communication & Team Strength


(8.30 10.30am)

a. Divide into 4 teams. Each in different parts of the room with flip-chart
stand facing away from other groups view.
b. Each team is given 1 flip-chart stand and 1 sheet of flip-chart paper.
c. Each team appoints an artist, the rest of the team members are
instructors.
d. A graphic image is given to the instructors.
e. The instructors then give directives to the artist to commence drawing
of the image on the flip-chart paper. Give 5 10 mins.
f. Groups told to stop.
g. Discussion follows feedback on their experience in communicating with
the artists, and about group dynamics.
h. Summarise discussion.

a. Ask meaning of 1H5W questions.


b. Link 1H5W questions to Blooms taxonomy of cognitive, psycho-motor &
affective skills.
c. Apply to questioning in class and setting of exam / test papers.
2.1 Active Learning: What is it about? How is it Done? (8.30AM

a. What is active learning full of activities (physical, kinestic) or


challenging to the mind.
b. Refer to homework reading, and classification of active learning methods.

2.2 The Way Forward: The Flip Class (12.00 1.00pm)

a. Meaning of flip classroom by referring to previous session of online


learning experience and discussion in classroom.
b. Preparing students for flip class learning.

2.3 Preparing Teaching Resources (2.15 3.15pm)

a. Principles for preparing teaching resources purpose & curriculum

b. Where to get materials : printed resources, audio and video sources.
c. Practice: Using AEON BIG brochures to prepare teaching materials,
objectives & use.
d. Presentations.
