1) For the following bivariate probability distribution of (X, Y) find:


(i) P(X 1 /Y 3) (ii) P(Y 3 / X 1) (iii) P(X + Y 4) (iv) E(Y 2X).

2) The joint probability density function of two random variables X and Y is given

3) Six dice are thrown 729 times. How many times do you expect at least three dice
to show a five or six?

4) VLSI chips, essential to the running of a computer system, fail in accordance


with a Poisson distribution with the rate of one chip in about 5 weeks. If there
are two spare chips on hand, and if a new supply will arrive in 8 weeks. What is
the probability that during the next 8 weeks the system will be down for a week
or more, owing to a lack of chips.

5) A set of examination marks is approximately normally distributed with a mean


of 75 and s.d. of 5. If the top 5% of students get grade A and the bottom 25% of
students get grade F, what mark is the lowest A and what mark is the highest F?

6) Derive the moment generating function for Binomial, Poisson and Normal
distribution. Find its mean and variance using moment generating function. Also
write the characteristics of normal distribution.

7) A sample of heights of 6400 Englishmen has a mean of 170 cms and a standard
deviation of 6.4 cms, while a sample of heights of 1600 Australian has a mean of
172 cm and a standard deviation of 6.3 cm. Do the data indicate that the
Australian is on the average taller than the Englishmen?
8) Before an increase in excise duty on tea, 400 people out of a sample of 500
persons were found to be tea drinkers. After an increase in duty, 400 people were
tea drinkers in a sample of 600 people. Using standard error of proportion,
whether there is a significant decrease in the consumption of tea. Take
(i) = 0.05 (ii) = 0.01.

9) Write the properties and uses of t-test, F-test and Chi-square-test.

10) The marks obtained by two groups of students in a test are given below.

Examine whether the average marks obtained by them differ significantly at 5%
and 1% level of significance.

11) Suppose that, in a public opinion survey answers to the question

Can you infer that opinion on local option is dependent on whether or not an
individual drinks at 5% level of significance? Verify it by using 2X 2 contingency
formula.

12) Four different, though supposedly equivalent, forms of standardized reading


achievement test were given to each of 5 students, and the following are the
scores which they obtained. Perform two-way analysis of variance to test at the
