2) The joint probability density function of two random variables X and Y is given
by f(x, y) = + , 0 , 0 . Compute (i) P(X > 1 / Y < )
(ii) P(Y < / X > 1) (iii) P(X < Y) (iv) P(X+Y ) .
3) Six dice are thrown 729 times. How many times do you expect at least three dice
to show a five or six?
6) Derive the moment generating function for Binomial, Poisson and Normal
distribution. Find its mean and variance using moment generating function. Also
write the characteristics of normal distribution.
7) A sample of heights of 6400 Englishmen has a mean of 170 cms and a standard
deviation of 6.4 cms, while a sample of heights of 1600 Australian has a mean of
172 cm and a standard deviation of 6.3 cm. Do the data indicate that the
Australian is on the average taller than the Englishmen?
8) Before an increase in excise duty on tea, 400 people out of a sample of 500
persons were found to be tea drinkers. After an increase in duty, 400 people were
tea drinkers in a sample of 600 people. Using standard error of proportion,
whether there is a significant decrease in the consumption of tea. Take
(i) = 0.05 (ii) = 0.01.
10) The marks obtained by two groups of students in a test are given below.
Regular 56 62 63 54 60 51 67 69 58
Part-time 62 70 71 62 60 56 75 64 72 68 66
Examine whether the average marks obtained by them differ significantly at 5%
and 1% level of significance.
