Find out how the principles of composition are used to organise the piece of music and
create interest. It is also important to recognize the pattern of organization and overall
structure of the music (form). Find out about elements of music and principles of music here.

In music interest is created by: making the song relatable. When the song is
relatable, the listener will be reminded by certain events in live. This might make the
listener get a sentimental feeling. This is called: The associative level.
Music can also be made interesting, by responding with our senses. The sound might
please the listener and them grit their teeth, or perhaps make him or her dance.
Tempo:
Say You Wont Let Go by James Arthur is a relaxed song. There is a calm but happy
pase which creates. The text and the rythm add to the mood which is created in the
song.
Rythm:
The song has a consistent rythm. The rythm stays the same troughout the first half of
the song. In the last half there are drums added.
Melody, form and harmony:
The song starts with a clear melody played by a guitar, in the back you can hear
some of the bass notes which form another (less clear) melody. These two form a
harmony. When the pre-chorus starts, another melody comes in. This one is similar
to the main one, however, it is played by a piano. Another harmony is formed, this
continues until the second verse starts. The second verse is the same as the first
one. When the pre-chorus and chorus come in again, the piano starts to play. The
third verse differs from the first two. In the third verse, the main melodies are gone,
the piano is the only one left. This continues until the end of the song, which is just a
chorus and the outro.
Timbre:
There is a change of melody by adding drums in the middle of the song. By this the
pitch and intensity of the chorus change as well. There is also a piano added when
the pre-choruses start.
The pre-choruses and choruses in this song do not have the exact same lyrics all the
time. However, they do have the same meaning and melody.
Dynamics:
The music gets a little more active around the middle part of the song. In the chorus
a bass enters but in the verses the song stays rather calm. Before the last chorus the
song gets extra calm to make the last chorus pop out more.
Historical and cultural insight:
There is no real historical or cultural insight to the song. It can be that the song is
about a cultural dilemma sush as someone who is scared a person he or she loves
will leave her. This can be by betrayal or by losing someone because of moving away
or because this person dies.
Culture:
The genre of the song is modern R&B. It plays in the culture of romantic and sad
songs. The song is about what will happen if the person who you love will leave you.
It is not that much about after a break-up but more about what to do to prevent a
break-up from happening.
Audience responsibility:
The song is not really meant to play at parties. It can be used for slow dancing
because of the rythm. The song is also good to relate and reflect to.

Decide how you want to show what is happening. Do you want to follow the lyrics as well as
the structure of the music? There is absolutely no need to re-enact the original, your story
can be completely different.

We are going to show what is happening by: Making a story that has to do with
the lyrics, but that does not follow the lyrics exactly, but it has to do with the title of
the song: say you won't let go, still makes the clip feel like it belongs to the song.
We will do this by bringing two storylines together. They both have to do with losing
someone.

Activate prior knowledge: how can you use Freytag's pyramid to tell your story? Which
metaphors are you going to use?
In the picture of our Freytags pyramid on the right,
the tension rises because the boyfriend thinks that
the girlfriend might be cheating and so there is a
fight. The boyfriend thinks this is the case because:
the girlfriend was crying in the hands of another boy,
which later appears to be the cousin of the girlfriend.
The boyfriend and girlfriend get a fight and the
climax is that the girlfriends grandma died. This was
the reason why the girlfriend was crying in the
hands of the cousin and soon after the climax, the
boyfriend finds out that it was her cousin and she was not cheating at all. The end of the
story is that they are happy together again and this is the same scene which is at the
beginning of the Freytags pyramid like it cycles. The end is the beginning as well.
Also, there are not many metaphors. The story is quite straight forward and that is how we
are also filming it. Every role plays just the role as how it is meant to be. There is no
underlying meaning.

What do you want to show and from whose perspective? What are you going to leave to the
interpretation of the viewer? How abstract or philosophical is the clip going to be?
The perspective, we filmed it from is: Third person. We chose this perspective
because we thought that this would be the most efficient way of showing what
happens. Also, by choosing this method, we are able to make scnes that with a first
person perspective would not have been possible. By this you can show more
emotions and by this make the story more attractive and relatable. We chose to keep
the story real and not make it to abstract or philosophical. We do not think it will add
a lot to the story we are trying to tell, it will only make it more complicated.

Which film style are you going to use? Some examples: Bollywood, film noir, musical,
slapstick.
We are probably making a film noir. We are doing a film noir because in this type
of film it is easy to show the emotion and vibe. Because the vibe is very dark and
sad, especially in the beginning. We think that the film will make more impact on the
viewer by using this style.

Our script
When the story starts everything is going alright. The boy and the girl are in a good
relationship we show this by making a shot of the boy- and girlfriend sitting close, and
watching netflix on the girlfriends telephone. The rising action starts when it is not going too
well with the grandma. We will show this by making a shot with the grandma, the girl and the
cousin.
First the relationship is going alright, you can see this by a scene of the boy and the girl
together. (As explained in the first paragraph) The action starts rising when the grandma is
getting ill. when the grandma dies the girlfriend and cousin are meeting each other.
The girlfriend and her cousin meet each other and the boyfriend sees this. This happens
somewhere outside (machine kade). The boyfriend see the girl and her cousin together. He
thinks she is cheating on him, when she is crying and her cousin is with her. When the
girlfriend comes back she and her boyfriend get into a fight.

After that you can see two shots. one is the girlfriend looking out the window with bad
weather. The other one is the boyfriend looking out the window, Also with bad weather.

When the action is falling again the boy finds out that his girlfriend was not cheating, after he
has found out the boy goes to his girlfriend and he apologises. At the end you can see the
boy and the girl in the same scene as the beginning happy with each other. This will create a
loop.

The minutes of our meetings

Lesson 1, 23-12-2016:
In this lesson, we were brainstorming about which song we should use for this project. There
were a few songs we were doubting about:
- Say you wont let go, by James Arthur
- Human, by Rag n Bone Man
- Love me now, by John Legend
- The weight, by Shawn Mendes
- Treat you better, by Shawn Mendes
We could not choose, so we decided to choose one after the holiday (which started that
day).

Lesson 2, 9-1-2017:
This was the lesson in which we decided on which song we were going to use. It took us the
whole lesson to choose the song. After listening all the options we made up, we decided to
use the song Say you wont let go, by James Arthur.

Lesson 3, 13-1-2017:
In this lesson, we came up with our script. We decided to not follow the lyrics, but use a
completely different story. We made up two stories that come together in the end. It will also
start the same as how it will end. We drew our Freytags pyramid and added our story to it,
which can be seen on the picture below.

Lesson 4, 16-1-2017:
This day, we were working on our script. We were thinking about who was going to play who
and where we were going to film everything.
Cast:
- The girl: Vivian Kip
- The boyfriend: Vincent Stoter
- The cousin: Marnick Tom
- The doctor: Los Endeveld
- The grandmother: Marlou Honkoop
At first we thought that Marnick was going to be
the boyfriend. However, we realised that
Marnick looks more like Vivian, so it would be
more clear if Marnick would be the cousin.

Lesson 5, 20-1-2017:
In this lesson we finished our script and started
filming. We decided to film the part where the
doctor (Los) call the girl to tell her that her
grandmother has died. To make Los look like a doctor, we used one of the labcoats used
with for example chemistry. We chose a quiet place in school and started filming.

Lesson 6, 23-1-2017:
We used this lesson to answer the questions that can be seen above. This took us the whole
lesson, so we did not have the time to film anything.

Lesson 7, 27-1-2017:
This lesson was used to film some parts. We filmed a part of the beginning where the girl
and the boyfriend are still happy together. We also filmed some shots were the girl and boy
are looking sadly out of the window. We also discussed when to film what and where we are
going to do that. This took the whole lesson.
