Frog Dissection Pre-lab

Directions: Search American Bullfrog and find the answers to help us prepare for dissection
on Friday.

1. Kingdom- Animalia
2. Phylum- Chordata
3. SubPhylum- Vertebrata
4. Classification- Lithobates

5. Why are frogs said to have two lives?

Frogs have two life stages that are in the water as eggs and then tadpoles and when
they are fully developed they live on land. Plus, amphibian means two-lives.

6. How are amphibians different from reptiles?

One difference between the two is the structure of their outer skin. Reptiles are
covered with scales, shields, or plates, and their toes have claws.

7. What are 3 adaptations that frogs have that make them amphibians?
The 3 adaptations that fros have that makes them amphibian are -

1) They are cold blooded

2) They respire both by Skin and lungs.
3) They lay eggs in water ; they have a 3 chambered heart.

8. List two ways in which tadpoles (immature frogs) and frogs differ from each other?
Tadpoles have only went threw the first stage of development immature frogs have
went threw more and have grow legs. Frogs can breathe on land and in water,
whereas tadpoles can only breathe in water.
External Anatomy
9. Dorsal means?
Upside or back of an animal or plant

10. Ventral means?

The underside of a plant or animal

11. Anterior means?

Nearer the front, especially in the front of the body, or nearer to the head or forepart.

12. Posterior means?

The rear or behind of a frog

13. Head means?

the upper part of the human body, or the front or upper part of the body of an animal, typically
separated from the rest of the body by a neck, and containing the brain, mouth, and sense
organs.

14. Torso means?

Main part of the frog

15. Frog lungs are poorly developed. How does this relate to their skin being thin and
moist? Frogs can respire through their moist skin. I believe that is an replacement to their
underdeveloped lungs.

16. Name 2 ways forelimbs are different than hind limbs.

1. hind limes tend to be sturdier, stronger and longer
2. the hind limbs are more firmly attached to the spine
Critical Thinking Questions
17. Frogs produce a huge number of babies at one time WHY do you think this is (HINT:
Finding Nemo)? So that the babies that die dont make a big impact on the population.

18. The frogs tongue is anchored in the very front opposite to the orientation and
anchoring of humans. Why do you think this is so? The frog's tongue is like this because when the
frog shoot it's tongue out to catch an insect or bug.The tongue then is pulled back to pull the insect
down it's throat so it doesn't have to chew them.
