Frog Dissection Pre-lab

Directions: Watch the virtual Dissection Introduction & External Anatomy to answer the
questions. Use the second web link to label the frogs internal organs with location and function.
Expect to take about an hour to prepare for this dissection.

1. Kingdom
___Animal____________________________
2.
Phylum__Chordate___________________________
_____
3. SubPhylum
_____________Verebrata___________________
4. Class
__________Amphibian_______________________
___

5. Why are frogs said to have two lives?

They have two lives because they spend part of their

lives in the water and part on land.

6. How are amphibians different from reptiles?

Reptiles have scales and claws on their toes and
amphibians do not.
7. What are 3 adaptations that frogs have that
make them amphibians?

They are cold blooded, They respire by skin and lungs,

and they lay eggs in the water.

8. List the ways in which tadpoles (immature frogs)

and frogs differ from each other?
Tadpoles or immature frogs live their live in the water
but frogs preferably the bullfrog live their lives out of
the water but will go into the water for food and
slightly protection.

External Anatomy
9. Dorsal means?
The back of the animal.
10. Ventral means?
The underside of an animal.
11. Anterior means?
Near the head.
12. Posterior means?
Near the hind end.
13. Head means?
The upper part of the body
14. Torso means?
The upper body like the chest.
15. Frog lungs are poorly developed. How does this
relate to their skin being thin and moist?
Frogs can breathe through their skin.
16. How does the tympanic membrane work?
It receives sound waves and transmit them to the
inner ear.
17. Name 2 ways forelimbs are different than hind
limbs. Forelimbs are at the front and they help the
frog launch up.

Critical Thinking Questions

18. Frogs produce a huge number of gametes at one
time WHY do you think this is (HINT: Finding Nemo)?
Frogs produce a huge number of eggs because if they
only produce one egg then they wouldnt be a next
generation.

19. The frogs tongue is anchored in the very front

opposite to the orientation and anchoring of humans.
Why do you think this is so? I think frog's tongue is
anchored at the front so that when the frog shoots out
his tongue it shoots out straight and touches the insect
and it pulls the insect back into the mouth.
