INTRODUCTION TO THE SUBJECT

The practice of minerals processing is as old as human civilization. Minerals and products
derived from minerals have formed our development cultures from the flints of the Stone Age
man to the uranium ores of Atomic Age.

Minerals by definition are natural inorganic substances possessing definite

chemical compositions and atomic structures. The enormous growth of industrialisation from the
eighteenth century onward led to dramatic increases in the annual output of most mineral
commodities, particularly metals. Mineral processing is usually carried out at the mine site, the
plant being referred to as a mill or concentrator. The essential purpose is to reduce the bulk of
the ore which must be transported to and processed by the smelter, by using relatively cheap,
low-energy physical methods to separate the valuable minerals from the waste (gangue)
minerals.

This enrichment process considerably increases the contained value of the ore
to allow economic transportation and smelting. Compared with chemical methods, the physical
methods used in mineral processing consume relatively small amounts of energy. This subject
deals about the steps involved in mineral processing. The liberation methods such as crushing,
grinding and equipments involved in crushing and grinding are briefly explained. The
concentration methods employed in mineral processing industry such as jigging, dense media
separation, flowing film concentration, flotation, electrical and magnetic methods of separation
processes are briefly explained for different minerals and coal.

The intention is to give students complete knowledge about different mineral

processing techniques and useful theoretical and practical information about the process
equipment used, their systems and operational environment.
