FIRE PREVENTION
Every individual on site should be aware that the risk of fire is
always present and must know how to take precautions to
prevent fire. The risk of fire can be reduced by :

(a) Keeping work areas clean and tidy and do not allow
rubbish to accumulate excessively as it provides a good
starting point for fire.
(b) Identifying the flammable substance zone with
conspicuous signs stating:

FLAMMABLE SUBSTANCE ZONE

No smoking or open flame within

three (3) metres of this area

Petrol volatile solvents or any other flammable substances

must be stored in containers that are clearly labelled.
Machinery or tools that produce flame , sparks, or heat in use
should be kept away from this zone.

(c) Ensuring that all lights and heaters are extinguished

at the end of each working day.
(d) Providing sand-filled ash-tray for the disposal of
cigarettes butts / match sticks at designated smoking
areas.

Various first aid and back up fire fighting facilities are available
on site. You must not interfere or tamper with this vital
equipment. FIRE HYDRANTS, HOSES AND EXTINGUISHERS ARE
EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE FIGHTING OF FIRES. Ensure that any
empty or faulty equipment is handed to your supervisor.

Make yourself familiar with the procedures on the use of the fire
fighting appliances and know where they are kept. The

appropriate types of fire extinguishers must be available in

quantities sufficient to protect the worksite and shall be
maintained and regularly tested. Never use conductive
extinguishers such as water or foam on electrical fires.

If fire does break out; extinguish it, if possible, then advice the
safety supervisor. If you cannot extinguish it, report the fire to
the fire department immediately.

Report any fire that you see.
