FOR TRAPEZOIDAL - SHAPE CANAL

b - Bottom width
d - Depth of flow
Z - Side slope ratio i.e., horizontal(H)/vertical(V)

q - flow rate to be carried by the channel

a - x-sectional area
v - average velocity
p - wetted perimeter
R - hydraulic radius i.e., the cross sectional area (a) divided by the wetted perimeter (p)
n - roughness coefficient of the channel
s - hydraulic gradient (slope of the channel)

NOTES:
a) To design for stability against ersosion, the cut condition
(i.e., lowest height) must be considered;
b) Bottom width b is determined by the need to not exceed permissible velocity under
codition of minimum retardance;
c) In the design for capacity, the previous bottom width b must be retained
(since you can not modify what has been opened as bottom width);
d) The nominated q must always be satisfied;
e) To design for capacity, the tallest grass condition i.e., highest height should
be used;
f) To maintain a constant q when grass is long, the design depth d must be increased
(hence, the cross sectional area a) because velocity v is reduced
