Dianna Hanna, former band instructor at Prairie
Valley High School, recently talked to students at South-
east Valley High School (the new name for the school
that is whole grade sharing).
Southeast Valley had Tri-M Inductions
last week at school and former Band Teacher Mrs.
Hanna was the guest speaker.
Mrs. Hanna talked about what made her leave
Southeast Valley High School so abruptly (cancer), en-
joying music all of her life, taking chances and doing
something other than what everyone else is calling the
norm.
Dianna is taking off this year to deal with her
cancer. There has been no decision on her coming back
next year.
Said Mrs. Hanna to the students, In regards
to music selection, its good to play the standards, but
also include some of the music that challenges and gets
us excited about playing. In the end, the experience and
educational value of taking risks and stretching yourself
with upper level music literature, is worth the time and
effort.
After starting the 2015-16 school year with
breast cancer, Dianna Hanna ended that year with colon
cancer and liver cancer. I was successfully treated at
Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and will be taking my
12th (and last) chemo treatment on Feb. 7, said Mrs.
Hanna.
My husband Bill and I bought a house in Sioux
City, to be near my son, Nathan, and grandson, Tyler,
and Bills family, who all live there. Bill and Dianna

Jazz concert and
pie auction
Tuesday, Feb. 14. . . .
Its that time again to come out and support the
Southeast Valley Music Department at the Jazz Concert
and Pie Auction. It will be held on Tuesday, February
14th, at 7 pm in the Southeast Valley High School gym in
Gowrie.
There will be entertainment by the Southeast
Valley High School Jazz Band, directed by Grant Hyland,
and by the Chamber and Treble Clef Choirs, directed by
Brandon Louis.
A variety of pies, donated by the student music
members, will be auctioned off throughout the evening
by auctioneer Donovan Adson. The money raised will go
towards the music department trip next year.
So come out and support the Southeast Valley
Music Department, listen to some great music, and take
home a delicious pie!

Dayton Review
The Gowrie News won three awards and the
won one award at the Iowa Newspaper
Associations Better Newspaper Contest held last week
in Des Moines.
All four awards were won in advertising and
Graphic Designer Tonya Harrison submitted work that
Tonya does graphic design for both the Gowrie
News and Dayton Review at her home in Gowrie.
Tonyas won first place (in Weekly One divi-

She won second place, Gowrie News, in adver-
tising for Automotive and Boats in the Weekly One divi-
sion.
Tonya finished second in Best Ad Designer for
the Dayton Review and third for Best Ad Designer for
Gowrie News in the weekly one division.

Central Community College and she has been a graphic

Southeast Valley JV Girls take seasons
final road trip; Edged by Panthers 35-30
The Southeast Valley Junior Varsity loaded the
bus for the final time this season Saturday, January 28th,
to face off with Storm Lake St. Marys. The Jaguars were
edged by the Panthers 35-30.
The Lady Jags suffered cold shooting the first
quarter, only scoring four points. Making up for their of-
fensive stutter, the Jags turned up the heat on the defen-
sive end, holding Storm Lake to ten first quarter points.

The second quarter yielded more defensive stops, giving
up only seven points to the Panther offense.
Allowing the Jaguars to close the gap, scoring
eight points of their own. The third quarter would bring
another shooting slump to the Jags, putting up only three
points. The Panthers took advantage of the Jaguars down
time, scoring eleven third quarter points.
Digging deep, the Jags went to work in the the
fourth quarter, pounding out fifteen points compared to
the Panthers seven points. The young Jaguars team kept
their composure offensively and never let up defensively.
Its hard to believe this was the same Jaguar team that
stepped onto the court last November.
Decision making and overall performance
demonstrated the tremendous growth of this team. Even
though the Jaguars have had to endure the taste of defeat,
they always gained wisdom and experience from mis-
takes. Continuing to work hard, the young Jaguar squad
her displays the ingredients to achieve the common goal of
success.

defense, recording 3 steals for the night. Cassi Berglund Jaguar varsity boys lose

pulled down 6 rebounds to benefit the Jaguars. Berglund to South Central Calhoun;
grabbed 3 boards and dished out an impressive 4 assists.
Berglund handled the ball well, valuing each good defense helps Jags
possession and making smart decisions. The Jaguars

The Jags started slow and could never catch up.
Southeast Valley was behind 7-0 to start the game. The
Jaguars made a late push and were only behind by two
late in the fourth quarter.
The Jag defense kept them in the game and the
game was tied at the half 19-19.
The Titans made two key three-pointers and
then spread the floor to take time off the clock as they
had a 50-43 lead.
Keegan Good led the Jags with 17 and Myles
Davis had 10 points and six boards. Dakota Jaeschke
contributed nine points and 10 rebounds.
Alex Pliner had eight rebounds for the Jags. The
team didnt have a good shooting nights.
The Jaguars did pull with two minutes with three
minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Thats when the
Titans made two threes and spread the floor.

Six Jaguar Wrestlers advance to District
competition Saturday, Feb. 11
Fisher ranked fourth in 2A wrestling...
The Jaguar wrestlers attended Sectional Wres-
tling Saturday, Feb. 4 at Humboldt. With a few hiccups
and surprises along the way, six wrestlers advanced to
District competition next Saturday, February 11th at
Webster City. In some what of a unique happening, all six
Jag wresters advanced as runner-ups in their respective
weight classes. 106 lbs. Coledon Bethel, 120 lbs. Sam
Hemmestad, 132 lbs. Trey Lawrence, 160 lbs. Kaelan
Lunberg, 170 lbs. Kyler Fisher, and Heavyweight Clay-
ton McFarland earned the right to battle at Districts for
a chance to punch their ticket to the storied Iowa High
School State Wrestling Tournament.
Coledon wrestled a good, smart match in the
semi's winning 2-0 against a Woodward Granger kid that
beat him last year but lost by fall against a solid Webster
City kid in the finals earning runner up honors with no
wrestle back.
Sam might have been the feel good story of the

cision to his Humboldt opponent in the finals.

Wrestling since age of 4. . .
Kaelan Lundberg, the only senior wrestler,
started wrestling at the age of 4. He was a two time JV
champ. As a Jr. he was the varsity champ at the Roland-
Story tournament.
Kaelan was voted the MVP at the St. Edmond
tournament by his fellow teammates. He took second
place in the conference meet as a Jr. and Sr. Lundberg
was a district qualifier as a Jr. and Sr. year where he will
again be participating at Webster City this weekend.
Overall, Kaelan has 97 wins. Good Luck at Districts!

A 42 -year-old mom discovers
she was adopted, almost never born. . .
The following column was written in Febru-
ary of 2010.
I escorted my mother Rosalie to a Valentines
Banquet Saturday, Feb. 13, at Tempe Nazarene Church,
Tempe, AZ. It was a fund-raiser for the Womens Minis-
try and it appeared to be a routine evening, until everyone
heard a stunning testimonial.
After the meal and introductions, Dave and
Kirsten Hart were on stage singing. They are profession-
als who sing/perform as a full-time career, and they were
very good. As the couple performed several contempo-
rary Christian music selections, and then some roman-
tic ballads (because of Valentines Day), I thought this
would be a nice, but fairly routine type of concert.
Later in the program, Kirsten took the micro-
phone and told the story of their lives. The couple strug-
gled in the beginning, and they endured some financial
hardships. But they managed to raise three boys, one of
whom is a star athlete at a Division II college.
Gradually over the years the married singing
duo received some acclaim and they became somewhat
successful, traveling all over the United States singing
at churches, church sponsored activities, or other venues
where their Christian music would be in demand.
After more than 20 years of marriage, the couple
received an invitation to perform on a cruise. This was
a big development and the first such offer that had been
made to David and Kirsten. They accepted and then were
told that they would need passports.
We had moved several times, and we were al-
ways traveling to perform in different cities. I needed a
birth certificate to get my passport, and I didnt want to
search through all the boxes, so I called the appropriate
county office in New York, Kirsten related.
Kirsten gave her name, maiden name, and other
pertinent facts for this government office. They didnt
have anything on file. There was no birth recorded in her
year of birth, or for any other year.
There must be some mistake. She repeated the
information, giving more data. Nothing. There was no
date, no listings whatsoever. Kirsten made a few more
calls, followed by more statements that she didnt exist.
Kirsten was exasperated, and one clerk suggested, Per-
haps you were adopted. This is one good possibility.
At first Kirsten was defiant and couldnt fathom
that idea, but as days passed by and then weeks, Kirsten
called her parents. She related her problems and asked

L. Jean Cafferty, 89, passed away Sunday,
February 5, 2017 at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in
Boone.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Thursday,
February 9, 2017 at the United Methodist Church, Gowrie
with Pastor Annette Kruse and Pastor Dave Kruse offi-
ciating. Burial will be Cedar Cemetery, Rinard. Friends

She is survived by daughter, Marj Johnson of

leb Johnson; Brooklyn and Boedy Lee; sister-in-law,

George and Olive (Clark) Hicks; brothers, Cliff; Donnie;
Harley; Milton; sister, Iva Littleton; husband, Cleo Caf-
ferty; and son-in-law, Rick Johnson.
L. Jean Cafferty was born January 16, 1928 at
Scranton, Iowa and graduated from Gowrie High School
in 1946. She was united in marriage with Cleo Cafferty
on August 26, 1950. They lived in Gowrie. Jean was em-
ployed with local insurance agencies as a book keeper. and Lavonne Dellachiesa of Fort Dodge.
They moved to Eastern Star Masonic Home, Boone in
2012.
Jean was a member of United Methodist Church,
Gowrie for 70 years, United Methodist Women, Gowrie
Public Library Board, Gowrie Federated Womens Club
and Eastern Star, Sunday School and Bible School teach-
er.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left for
United Methodist Church, Gowrie and Suncrest Hospice
of West Des Moines.

team wrapped up the month of January on a successful
note, defeating South Central Calhoun here on 1/31/17 by
the score of 47-42.
Leading statistical leaders for the young Jags
were Chase Swieter with 18 points, 9 rebounds, and 5
blocks, Carter Lane with 9 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists,
and 4 steals, Robert Jepsen with 6 points, 9 rebounds, and
7 blocks, Ross Halligan with 5 points and 4 steals, Hunter
Kruse with 5 points, and Ethan Pliner with 4 points.
Playing valuable minutes and not scoring for the
team were the efforts of Joel Lambert and Lincoln Miller.

Frances I. Rude, 89, passed away Saturday, Feb-
ruary 4, 2017 at the Simpson Center, Friendship Haven,
Fort Dodge.
Funeral services will be 10:30 Wednesday,
February 8, 2017 at Our Lady Good Counsel Catholic
Church, Moorland with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating
the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Gowrie
Township Cemetery. A parish rosary will be at 3:40 pm
with a visitation following at 4:00 pm Tuesday, February
7, 2017 at Palmer Funeral Home, Gowrie.
She is survived by daughter, Linda (Lee) Davis
of LaVista, NE; son, Wayne (Nancy) Rude of Ankeny;
son, Larry H. (Donna Murphy) Rude of Washington DC;
daughter, Marianne (Daryl) Carlson of Paton; son, Bill
(Jolene) Rude of Grimes; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-

Frances I. McColley was born July 18, 1927 at
a farmhouse in Verdel, NE and graduated from Corpus
Christi High School in Fort Dodge. Frances worked for
Tobin Pack in Fort Dodge for 4 years. Frances was united
in marriage to Howard Rude October 8, 1949 at Corpus
Christi Church. They established their home in Gowrie.
Frances was a homemaker and employed at First State
Bank, Gowrie.
Frances was a member of Our Lady of Good
Counsel Church, Federated Womens Club, American
Legion Auxiliary, Rosarians of OLGC, and Elderbridge.
She was a volunteer, charter member and EMT for the
Gowrie Ambulance, Gowrie Care Center, Trinity Re-
gional Hospital, Meals on Wheels, and Communion for
the Home Bound. She raised her children and enjoyed
gardening flowers and vegetables. She loved to sew
clothing and enjoyed attending her kids sporting events
and other activities.
Memorials may be left to Unity Point Hospice in
Fort Dodge and Southwest Webster Ambulance.

finished their seasons last Thursday at SCC. The 7th
grade finished with a winning record of 6 and 5. This
team worked hard all season long and had several close
games throughout the year with some work in the off sea-
son this team can have a even better season next year.
The 8th grade had a very successful 10-1 sea-
son. This team is very special with their work ethic and
attitude throughout the season, this is a very unselfish and
team oriented squad that does not care who the leading
scorer is as long as they come out on top every night.
This squad never gets down on one another and demon-
strates what a true team should be. This will be a very
successful team throughout their high school years.
We would also like to think all of the parents and
grandparents for all of their support at games we would
also like to thank AD Mr.Stull and the Southeast Valley
Administration for all of their work behind the scenes.

An organization had provided a very nice play-
ground geared to many of the childrens disabilities as
well as the able bodied ones. Many liked it when we had
time from our other work assignments to take them to the
swings and other play equipment.
I dont think there is a single person who has gone
to West Haven that hasnt been drawn to a particular child
or children. We just had to be careful to not be gravitating
to the more loveable and overlooking the others.
There are more memories and I will eventually
tell about them. There is a reason this mission is called A
VACATION WITH A PURPOSE. It means we have some
free days to explore the various attractions this tropical
island has and relaxing a bit from our chores. I will be
sharing some of those too. In the meantime, I hope I have
sparked some interest in some readers looking into taking

7 Tips to Prevent Tax ID Fraud
As the 2017 tax season gets underway, Heartland
Bank is urging all customers to take extra precaution when
filing their return to prevent their exposure to tax fraud.
Fraudsters are using very clever tactics to get a hold of
your personal information and submit false tax claims,
said Kevin Black, President/CEO. Consumers must
be suspicious of any communication from the IRS
through email, text or social media that requests personal
W-2s and mail containing sensitive financial information.
Tax identity fraud takes place when a criminal files
a false tax return using a stolen Social Security number
in order to fraudulently claim the refund. Identity thieves
generally file false claims early in the year and victims are
unaware until they file a return and learn one has already
been filed in their name.
To help consumers prevent tax ID fraud, Heartland
Bank is offering the following tips:
File early. File your tax return as soon as youre able
giving criminals less time to use your information to file a
false return.
File on a protected Wi-Fi network. If youre using an
online service to file your return, be sure youre connected
to a password-protected personal network. Avoid using
public networks like a Wi-Fi hotspot at a coffee shop.
Use a secure mailbox. If youre filing by mail, drop
your tax return at the post office or an official postal box
instead of your mailbox at home. Some criminals look for
completed tax return forms in home mailboxes during tax
Find a tax preparer you trust. If youre planning to
hire someone to do your taxes, get recommendations and
research a tax preparer thoroughly before handing over all
of your financial information.
Shred what you dont need. Once youve completed
your tax return, shred the sensitive documents that you no
longer need and safely file away the ones you do.
Beware of phishing scams by email, text or phone.
Scammers may try to solicit sensitive information by
impersonating the IRS. Know that the IRS will not contact
you by email, text or social media. If the IRS needs
information, they will contact you by mail first.
Keep an eye out for missing mail. Fraudsters look for
W-2s, tax refunds or other mail containing your financial
information. If you dont receive your W-2s, and your
employer indicates theyve been mailed, or it looks like it
has been previously opened upon delivery, contact the IRS
immediately.
If you believe youre a victim of tax identity theft
or if the IRS denies your tax return because one has
previously been filed under your name, alert the IRS
Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 1-800-908-4490. In
addition, you should:
Respond immediately to any IRS notice and complete
IRS Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit.
Contact your bank immediately, and close any
accounts opened without your permission or tampered
with.
Contact the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud
alert on your credit records:
Equifax, www.Equifax.com, 1-800-525-6285; Experian,
www.Experian.com, 1-888-397-3742; and TransUnion,
www.TransUnion.com, 1-800-680-7289
even if you must do so by paper.

Larry Hicks, Farnhamville, farmed
from boyhood through retirement
Marries Lohrville school mate. . .

Larry Hicks, Farnhamville, was raised on a
farm near Coon Rapids, farmed with his father after high
school, and continued to farm with his wife Carole until
his retirement.
Farming has been his life and he has enjoyed it.
Iowa is a great place to live and to raise a fam-
ily, said Larry.
Larry and his younger brother Roy were the
children of Clifford of Leon (mother) Hicks, rural Coon
Rapids. They rented 320 acres (half a section) of land
and had hogs, chickens, and cattle along with their row
crops.
Larry attended school in Lohrville and was a
1960 graduate of Lohrville High School. He didnt have
much time for school activities since he was in charge of
the hogs, chickens and stock cows. His dad did the milk-
ing.
Larry was involved in 4-H for a few years and
he entered the calf competition. His favorite diversion
was hunting. He hunted foxes and coyotes with a rifle
and also did trapping. He received $2 for each fox.
But when fox fur became more valuable his
hunting interest diminished. He hunted with some
friends. His brother Roy was five years younger.
All through grade school and high school he
knew one farm girl, Carole Seil, from the Lohrville area.
After high school they dated and two years after gradua-
tion they were married.
Larry continued to farm with his father Clifford
until his father died in 1985. After that Larry farmed with
his wife Carole and at one time they farmed three pieces
of land totaling about 900 acres (one parcel she inherited
from her parents). The other land was rented.
Larry and Carole had three daughters: Sherri,
Diane, and Patty. They have all married and have their
own families in this area.
Larry and Carole continued farming until 2004
when Larry had back problems and subsequent back sur-
gery. They now rent out their land to other farmers.
Larry, who also worked at Anderson Machin-
ery in Gowrie for 25 years while farming, has witnessed Larry Hicks, right, is pictured with his younger brother

The biggest change Ive seen involves farm
In retirement Larry and Carole frequently visit
machinery, he said. In 1969 I purchased a combine for
family members including their children. Watching their

Larry and Carole frequently see some of their
class members. In fact, they will dine out or socialize
with a few once a month or so. Larrys class of 1960 had
a graduating class of 23 and there is a class reunion every
five years. The Lohrville High School is gone, of course,
and the reunions are usually at the community center in
Lohrville.
Their daughter Diane is married to Larry Bick-
ford, a retired real estate agent in Fort Dodge. Larry has
a boy and girl from a previous marriage.
Larry and Caroles daughter Sherry teaches in
Ankeny ad her husband Rod Silve is a computer pro-
grammer at Pioneer in Johnston. They live in Ankeny
and have three daughters.
Carole and Larrys daughter Patty has a quilt-
ing machine. Her husband Jay Anderson owns and oper-
ates Anderson Machinery with his father in rural Gowrie.

The Eighth Annual Marlin Benson Fun Run will
be Saturday, Feb. 11 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.. The event will
begin with registration at Mulligans in Gowrie from 9 a.m.
to 10 a.m. Maps will be available at registration and at each
stop.
The route goes from Gowrie, Moorland,
Duncombe, Lehigh, Stratford, Dayton, Paton, then return-
ing to Gowrie.
Stops will be made at the following businesses:
Marvs Grill and Bar, Gowrie; Ralphs Tap, Moorland;
Stumpys Bar & Grill, Duncombe; Riverside Tap, Lehigh;
Rungos Stratford; Iron Saddle Dayton 209 Main St,

The event will proceed with snow or without
snow. ATV and UTVs are welcome to accomindate the

The Marlin Benson Snowmobile Run Started 8
years ago after Marlin lost his battle with Cancer. It was
started by some friends and family to fund a trail on Lake
Namakagon in Wisconsin with his name.
Following that, local participants saw the need
for a snowmobile club to groom trails and promote safety.
The club was started. The first year the Marlin Benson
Ride donated money to the club as they were raising funds
beyond what they needed.
Soon after the promoters looked to move the ride
under the clubs name to get more help. We currently have
60+ members annually and over 150 miles of groomed
trails in Webster County. Webster County Ice Breakers
are an affiliate of the Iowa State Snowmobile Association
(ISSA). Members are asked to pay a $10 fee for our club

The snowmobile group works in conjunction
with the DNR and neighboring clubs to create better net-
working trails annually and are currently connected to
trails for Sno-Pak in Knierim, Team Iowa Snowmobilers
in Stratford. You could ride groomed marked trails from
Marshalltown all the way to Okoboji!
Webster County Ice Breakers connect with
Brushy Creek State Park for additional trail miles beyond
the ditch riding that is maintain.

There are 29,000 registered sleds in Iowa and over 8000
miles of trail in the state. There are fifty plus trail groom-
ing machines in the state two of which are run by Webster
County Ice Breakers.
Snowmobiling generates over $80 Million Annu-
ally in Iowa supporting over 1100 jobs and 27.9 million in
personal revenue.
The club aims to promote safe riding, partner-
ships with the communities, family time outdoors in the
winter, and fellowship.
The club gives an annual College Scholarship of
$1000 to a youth of scholastic excellence that is active and
promotes snowmobiling locally. Last year we gave out 2
scholarships.

them, You are my parents, right? I am your daughter,
arent I?
Why, yes you are our daughter, affirmed her
mother. Absolutely. Both her father and mother were
so positive and reassuring.
More days went by and Kirsten had a roller-
coaster of emotions. She needed to know for sure. She
called New York again, asking for information on chil-
dren adopted in the 1960s. Those records were sealed.
But after repeated calls, and several pleadings,
one office worker gave her the information she would
need. There was a baby born on her date, and there was
an adoption. Nothing else could be disclosed.
Kirsten ended that phone call in shock, but later
she had a firm resolve. She must know for sure. She hired
a private detective.
The detective was experienced and resource-
ful. After some sleuthing, he called Kirsten and reported
his findings. Your natural mother was Helen ....and she
gave you birth at (giving her the name of the hospital,
time of birth, and other vital statistics). Your mother
gave birth, you were adopted by (her parents who never
divulged this secret), and your mother vanished. Right
now there is no other information.
Kirsten was stunned. She was 42 years old and
she had discovered that she was an adopted baby, that her
real mother gave her birth and signed legal papers for her
daughter to be adopted. She asked the detective to find
her real mother.
A few weeks later he called with another report.
Her mother still couldnt be located, but Kirsten had two
brothers and a sister. He gave her their names and ad-
dresses.
This was a gift from God, said Kirsten. I still
didnt know much about my mother, but I learned that I
have siblings. This was such a blessing to know.
Please find out anything you can about my
mother, Kirsten said to the detective. This time he traced
her mothers history all the way back to her birth. In the
meantime, Kirsten was contacting her siblings, one of
whom actually lived fairly close to her. Plans were made
for everyone to get together, and Kirsten was experienc-
ing such joy. Truly, all these things were wonderful
gifts from God, she said.
Kirsten was so deliriously happy to have a re-
union with her brothers and sister. She was in total ec-
stasy. Nothing could be greater. She was experiencing so
much happiness.
But there was one more bombshell remaining.
Her detective gave his final report. He mentioned her
mothers date of birth, her early childhood, schooling,
even her boyfriends. At an early age her mother took a
trip to Sweden and was there for one month. She couldnt
find a doctor to give her an abortion in that 1960-some-
thing year.
She came back to the United States and gave
birth to Kirsten.
And that was an unbelievable gift from God that
had Kirsten quivering and awe-struck. She had brothers,
a sister, a mother, and she was almost never born.
And that was an incredible blessing from God.
After she related this story it was so quiet in the banquet
hall. It was a true story everyone will remember.

The corps made its first home appearance on
Memorial Day, 1928, and its first public appearance was
in Fort Dodge in 1929 when it marched in a parade at the
state convention of the G.A.R.
Its first competition was at Marshalltown in
1929 at the Department of Iowa convention. The corps
placed in the finals. Approximately 30 corps were in the
competition and ten were chosen for final competition by
participation in preliminary contests and parade scoring.

After competing in a Tri-State contest at
Dubuque in 1931, where the corps placed 4th, they added

Resolution to SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF A BICYCLE,
PEDESTRIAN, AND TRAIL MASTER PLAN FOR WEBSTER COUNTY
AND THE CITY OF FORT DODGE, IOWA
WHEREAS, a number of trails have been developed within the
Greater Fort Dodge region, situating the City for future connections within
unincorporated Webster County;
WHEREAS, the Greater Fort Dodge Trails Advisory Committee has
found the need to develop a master plan for trails within Fort Dodge and
Webster County;
WHEREAS, the City of Fort Dodge received a grant from the Wellmark
Foundation in the amount of $75,000 to develop a Comprehensive Bicycle,
Pedestrian and Trail Master Plan; Marketing Plan; and Trailhead;
WHEREAS, the City has entered into agreement with Snyder &
Associates to develop a Comprehensive Bicycle, Pedestrian and Trail
Master Plan; Marketing Plan; and Trailhead;
WHEREAS, $88,000 of this agreement is for development of a
Comprehensive Bicycle, Pedestrian and Trail Master Plan (which includes
a marketing plan) for the City of Fort Dodge and Webster County;
WHEREAS, the Comprehensive Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Trail
Master Plan will use a county-wide survey, among other means of public
input, to understand where future trail connections should be provided
within Webster County;
WHEREAS, Snyder & Associates will develop an interactive map to
be used by Webster County and the City of Fort Dodge for displaying and
communicating trails and their associated amenities;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Webster County
Board of Supervisors supports the development of a Comprehensive
Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Trail Master Plan for Webster County and the City
of Fort Dodge.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Webster County Board of
Supervisors has committed $10,000 toward this project.

The Southeast Webster Grand Community Schools and Prairie
Valley Community Schools held their regular board meetings jointly on
Wednesday, January 25, 2017 in the Prairie Valley High School Library.
President Miller called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.
A roll call vote was taken.
Present: Shannon Miller, Gary Welter, Kathy Carlson, Patrice
Klingson, Jim Carlson, Heidi McGuire, Joe Harrison
Absent: None
Also Present: Brian Johnson, Jim Duncan, Jim Henrich, Lisa
Willardson, Patrick Monahan and 3 public members and staff.
Moved by J. Carlson, seconded by K. Carlson to approve the PV
consent agenda items, including the agenda, approval of the minutes and
approval of the bills. Ayes: Miller, Welter, K. Carlson, Klingson, J. Carlson,

Visitors were welcomed. No citizen participation at this time.
SIAC Committee is tentatively set to meet on March 28th from 6-7:15
p.m. in the High School Commons.
The Finance/Negotiations team met on Jauary 4th in regards to early
retirement.
The Transportation Committee met on January 4th in regards to
updating our bus fleet.
Jaguar Jubilations were shared-
PV Elementary students earned a school-wide celebration activity
for following the Jaguar Journey expectations of appropriate behavior. As
the lunchroom wall to signify their classrooms earning a milestone of good
behavior. Each time the students have 25 paw-prints displayed, there is
a celebration assembly and a following activity for the whole school. For
this activity, the students were mixed with another grade level classroom.
The older students went to the younger students classroom and played
a board game with them. The students really enjoyed the activity! These
activities are not only fun and acknowledge good behavior, they also
help increase positive school culture. The next time youre in our building
you can look at our lunchroom wall and see how close we are getting to

Tri M induction ceremony is being held. We have over 30 kids
involved in Large Group Speech. There are 18 students working on 30
Individual Speech contest entries at this time.

Jim Duncan report PV Elementary
TK/K s Winter Reading is Rewarding Celebration. The students
and their families played games and did activities to celebrate reading.
Additionally, each student received a new book! Many parts of this event
are funded by the generosity of the Palmer Foundation. We thank them
for their continued support!
Alexis Finder, first year elementary music teacher, introduced a new
term to our 3rd & 4th grade students. She held an informance, which is
a small music performance showing instruction that takes place in music
classes as well as music concert etiquette. The students did a great job!
The TK-2 Music Concert will be Thurs., Jan. 26th, at 7:00 PM, in the main
elementary gym. The 3rd & 4th grade will have their concert later in the
year.
Our 4 Year-Old Preschool held its annual concert and following classroom
visit on Dec. 22nd. Preschoolers performed in the auditorium. It was
great to see all the students parents and other family members visit our
school!
All students TK-4th grade take the second round of FAST Reading
Screenings in January. Students are assessed on their reading fluency
and reading comprehension progress in the fall, winter, and then in the
spring each year. FAST stands for Formative Assessment System for
Teachers.
The 100th Day of School is Quickly Approaching: Our younger
grades will be doing mathematical & other activities to recognize and
celebrate the 100th day of school.
Iowa Assessments Testing Window Opens on Feb. 6th, 2017: These
standardized tests are given annually in the 3rd & 4th grades. The test
subject areas are: Reading, Math, Science, & Social Studies.
I have constructed a scheduling procedure to provide increased
growth opportunities for our new and veteran elementary teachers. This
procedure provides an avenue where teachers can go to other teachers
classrooms for professional learning observations or activities This
allows our model teacher (Andrea W.) and our mentor teachers (Ann K.
& Patty K.) to be utilized more effectively. This schedule/procedure is
flexible and can be adjusted as needed. We are always looking for ways
to increase professional growth and collaboration.
Jim Henrich report Southeast Valley High School
A list of students that have met the requirements of graduation from
the Prairie Valley and Southeast Webster-Grand Schools as of the end of
the first trimester in the 2016-17 school year was presented.
Jeff Kruse, SVHS teacher gave a presentation on the Professional
Learning Community Freshman Academy. This is a group formed under
the Teacher Leadership Compensation Grant that Prairie Valley started
receiving this year. There are several different PLC groups in both districts.
The Freshman Academy PLC is specifically focused on transitioning
freshman students into high school. Some of the things they have worked
on are Response To Intervention for students who need additional help,
providing assistance in organization skills, and implementing a homework
club after school. The results are proving very positive.

Lehigh Fire Rescue Ice Fishing Contest

At Brushy Creek Lake Saturday. . .
There were 46 people who entered the Lehigh
Fire Rescue Department Ice fishing contest at Brushy
Creek Lake Saturday, Feb. 4.
There were three different types of soup. There
were regular chili, southwest style chili, and chicken
noddle soup. There also were bars and cinnamon rolls as
well as milk,water, coffee, and lemonade.
A lot of the fish were caught on wax worms and
a jig. A few fish were caught on minnows. A lot of the
fish were caught on the north end of Brushy Creek Lake.
There was a silent auction on gift certificates.
There were two gift certificates for two people
for complimentary Sunday brunches at Best Western
Starlite Village Inn and Suites in Fort Dodge. There
were also gift cards for Boomgaars, Community Tap,
Fort Dodge, Bufords Steak House, and a special toilet
seat.
The final weigh-in was at 1 pm Saturday, Feb-
ruary 4. There was a $20 entry fee.
On Saturday, January 28, the Lehigh Fire De-
partment and Duncombe Fire Department had an ice
training exercise on Brushy Creek Lake.
The Lehigh Fire Department used K97 out of
Fort Dodge and other radio stations to advertise the ice
fishing contest.
The Lehigh Fire Rescue Dept. has 15 members.
All but two of its members has turnout gear. The turnout
gear per person cost $ 6035 A helmet cost $150 A no-
max hood, which protects the firefighters neck and face
Biggest crappie. . .
Cody Crouch, Williams, Iowa, caught a 1.02
pound crappie that measured 12.25 inches long. He caught
the crappie on a jig and a wax worm at Brushy Creek Lake
on Saturday, February 4, during Lehighs Ice Fishing Con-
test.

A checklist provided by Homeland Security was gone over for both
locations. They are only allowed to make recommendations. The list will
be reviewed and any action needed will be taken.
The annual Superintendent Evaluation will need to be completed in
the near future. An evaluation form was given to all Board Members to
complete and return to the District Business Manager for the February
meeting.
The Iowa State Report cards have been published and were
discussed.
We received our first check from the Fuel the Jags program. $903.77.
Although the numbers are less than we had hoped for, but plans are in
place to help increase the users.
Legislative updates were discussed. The Superintendent talked about
the Supplemental State Aid increase that has been discussed. Although
costs $55
A pass device is part of the air pack, which
sounds an alarm if your air runs out. The air pack cost is
$265. An Air tank, which is good for 30 -40 minutes of
air, with mask costs $450o.
The fire coat expense is $550. Gloves total $45.
Other expenses are: fire pants, $550; suspenders, $35;
boots, $150.
Pager radios cost from $250 up to $600.
The money raised from the Lehigh Fire Depart-
ment Ice Fishing contest will be used for to purchase
pager radios and turnout gear.
Lehigh Fire Department would like to recog-
nize the following: Dodson Truck and Trailer,Dayton;
Duncombe Gas and Grocery, Duncombe; Otho Fire and
Rescue for the tables and chairs; and finally Lehigh Val-
ley Cooperative Telephone Association for use of the
building.

Brushy Creek Lake---Ice is variable on Brushy
Creek Lake, especially near the south end of the lake
and the east boat ramp. Use caution and test ice thick-
ness often when venturing out. The best ice conditions
and most fishing action have been on the north end of the
lake. Bluegill - Fair: Use a small jig tipped with a wax
worm. Black Crappie - Fair: Try wax worms and min-
nows fished on a small jig.
Moorland Pond--About 1,500 rainbow trout
were stocked on Jan. 20th. Catch trout with a variety of
methods; use live minnows fished under a bobber, small
tube and twister jigs, in-line spinners and casting spoons.

Trout - Good: The family fishing event for this Saturday,
Feb. 4th has been canceled due to inadequate ice thick-
ness for a large crowd on a small area. The trout stocking
has only been postponed. Trout will be stocked during the
week of Feb. 6th to give ice anglers a chance at them for
the rest of the winter.
Don Williams Lake--Black Crappie - Fair:
The crappie bite has been consistent all winter. Use wax
worms or minnows. Target the mid-lake section at depths
of 15-25 feet; schools of crappie are moving through sus-
pended.

feels strongly that we will be lucky to get that much. Concerns about
moving to the voucher system were discussed. It was also mentioned
that some changes to Chapter 20, which covers collective bargaining are
looking inevitable.

Music Honor Society and to the new inductees.
Tri-M Music Honor Society, formerly known
as Modern Music Masters, is a high school and middle
school music honor society and is a program of the Na-
tional Association for Music Education (NAfME). It is
designed to recognize students for their academic and
musical achievements and to provide leadership and ser-
vice opportunities to young musicians.
Each school has its own chapter, which is run
by the students but supervised by an advisor or sponsor,

The Tri-M Music Honor Society is a program
of NAfME which focuses on creating future leaders in
music education and music advocacy. Tri-M is the only
national honor society for student musicians in grades
6-12. There are more than 1,800 chapters across all 50
states, involving more than 75,000 students.
Each year, these students contribute more than
750,000 service hours to their schools and local commu-
nities, and raise nearly $1 million for causes they care
about. NAfME awards more than $2,000 in scholarships
each year to chapters that demonstrate exceptional ser-
vice and leadership.

They have a farm southwest of Gowrie. Jay is the Fire
Chief in Farnhamville and he is also an EMT.
I loved farming, said Larry. It was a good
way of life Today a person almost needs a family mem-
ber to help them get started in farming. It isnt easy but
its a great life.
Larry and Carole are thankful for each day. In
December of 2016 Larry had open heart surgery. He is
