BLOODSPATTERPROJECT:REEMAANDANNA

Problem:Howdoestheheightofthefallaffectthesizeofthebloodspatter?

Hypothesis:Wepredictthat,ifthebloodfallsfromatallerheight,thebloodsplatterwill
haveashorterdiameter.Ifitfallsfromashorterdistance,thespatterwillhavealarger
diameter.Basedoffofthis,wecandeterminewhetherthebloodfellfromAnnawhile
shewasstandingupright,orifitfellwhileshewaslyingonthefloor.

Procedure:
Beforeyoustart,gatherthefollowingmaterials:
Dropper(pipette)
Meterstickormeasuringtape
SimulatedBlood
WhitePaper
PaperTowels(justincase)
Onceyouhavegatheredallofthematerials,youmaybegin
proceedingwiththeexperiment.
1. Laythewhitepieceofpaperflatout(keeppapertowelsnearbyto
cleanupanymessesmade).
2. Createacharttologyourinformationforthefollowingheightsin
centimeters:
a. 0,20,60,100,130,165,&200
3. Fillyourdropperwiththesimulatedbloodanddroptwodropsateach
height.Spaceoutthedropssothattheydonotlandontopofeach
other.
4. Measurethediameter,inmillimeters,ofeachblooddrop.Ifthereare
twodifferentnumbersforthesameheight,findtheaverageofboth
numbers.

5. CompareyourgraphwithAnnasdata.

Conclusion:
Basedoffofourresults,webelievethatAnnawasstartedbleedingwhenshehither
headonthestoolbecausetheheightwasabout2feet,theheightastoolcouldbe.

Whatdoyouthinkhappenednow?:
Afterconductingthisexperiment,webelieveherdeathwasaccidental.Wearestill
unsureastowhetherthiswasanaccidentaldeathorasuicidebutwearerulingout
murderfornow.Theideathatadrugormedicationshewastakingdidntsettlewellwith
herconditionskindofcomestomind.Whilepassingoutfromeffectsofherdosage,she
mustvehitherheadonthestool.

CONCLUSIONQUESTIONS:
1. Wecontrolledtheexternalvariablesinourexperimentbyconductingthis
experimentwherenowindcouldaffectthedirectionandwedroppedtwodrops
justincasethefirstonewasaffectedinanyway.
2. Basedoffofthebloodspattersfound,webelievethatAnnahitherheadonthe
stoolwhilefallingandbegunbleedingthere.Becausethesplattersareround,we
knowthatshewasbleedingfromstraightupratherthansmearingblood
everywhere.Incorporatingtheevidence,therewasabloodsmearonthestool
whichcouldbewhereshehitherheadandbegunbleeding.
3. TheBloodSpatterAnalystwouldarriveatthecrimescenetotakemeasurements
anddeterminehowthebloodhadfallen.Basedoffofthisinformationtheycould
getanideaconcerninghowandwherethevictimstartedbleeding.Thishelpsthe
casebyprovidingsupportthatherdeathwasaccidental,murder,orsuicide.
