WIND LOADINGS IN TOWES IN ACCORDANCE WITH NSCP VOL. 1 6TH EDITION AND
EIA/TIA-222-G
Presented by: Engr. Cecilio B. Espino II

CENTROIDS: Civil Engineering Trends, Outputs, and Innovations in Design of Structures was the
penultimate seminar of the lecture series which featured the applications of wind loads in Structural
Design. The resource speaker for the seminar was Engr. Cecilio Espino II of Abinales Associates Engineers
+ Consultants. He usually works with the design and retrofitting of telecommunication towers which
involves the application of wind loads. The topic was then divided into four subtopics, arranged as follows:
relationship of different type of structural towers, pertinent wind loads in NSCP 2010, wind load provisions
according to EIA/TIA-222-G, and the use of section 207 of NSCP 2010. Engr. Espino showed different
types of towers which are the self-supporting, guyed, and monopole tower. According to him, tower
geometry affects the tower weight, its capacity to carry weight, and the ease of mounting antennae. He also
categorized a tower as per its cross section, which is either a three-legged or a four-legged tower. Towers
can also be categorized base on their bracing configuration, such are the V, X, K, and lattice bracing
systems. He further added that towers can be differentiated through their material section and profile.
Those towers can either be tubular or flat in section. After discussing towers, Engr. Espino proceeded to
the application of the local wind loading provisions and the design wind force for towers appurtenance
using the international code which is the EIA/TIA 222- G. Time after time he gives the vocabulary which
were used in the formulas presented. Engr. Espino then explained the context of Section 207 of the NSCP
2010. Under this section, there are three methods used in calculating wind loads. Such methods are the
Simplified, Analytical, and Wind Tunnel procedure. He gave the significant provisions of each procedure,
when or when not to use it. Engr. Espino shared that during one of Engr. Abinaless trip in Thailand for the
Wind-Tunnel testing procedure, he saw that one of the building models being tested was the Gramercy
Residences in Makati. During the open forum, Engr. Espino answered a question related to the publication
of the latest edition of NSCP. He was asked on whether telecommunication companies will be required to
re-evaluate their towers to comply with the latest changes in wind loadings of the NSCP. According to
Engr. Espino, there will be a transition period before completely ordering all the design firms to follow the
latest change in the code. Under this transition period, telecommunication companies will be asked to
evaluate their towers if their capacity will still be safe under the latest code.

Wind loadings to the structure is as significant as earthquake loadings especially for those structures which
take advantage of their height. The necessity to be informed in their application to design is imperative in
order for a structural engineer to ensure that every structure to be designed will be safe and sound.
