Synopsis
Rosalia is a 65-year-old woman from the outskirts of So
Paulo. She has spent most her life working on a electrical
reactor factory.

One day, Rosalia looses her job, and her brother Jos
decides to take her with him on a road trip to Buenos
Aires.

This trip will subtly transform an essential part of Rosalia,

and the way she perceives the world around her.
Directors Statement
A Window to Rosalia is a film about a woman who has
lived an isolated life, devoted to her work in a factory
on the outskirts of So Paulo. Rosalia looses her job and
suddenly has to deal with a total rupture in her daily life.
Her brother Jos tries to comfort her and decides to take
her along on his work trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina.

This trip will root a transformation in Rosalias way to look

at herself and the world. Detached from this foreign city,
experiencing it with an outsiders eyes, Rosalia will slowly
start to fantasize and interact with this new world. The
journey, the altered routine and the unexpected, will all
be the main agents of a subtle movement of change,
allowing Rosalia to set a fresh look on life.

The characters on this film are all starting their later

life not carrying any dreams or hopes. They have long
surrendered to harsh social and economical emotional
difficulties, tolerating their routines and renouncing their
desires for happiness, speeding up a movement of death.

A Window to Rosalia is a story that values simplicity,

realism, and the complexity of human characters. The
narrative is led by daily life poetry, by the richness of
simple acts and the places where the story takes place.

Aesthetically, I followed the path of my short films, trying

to achieve a naturalistic imagery through an almost
documental way of shooting.

Creating an extremely simple story that overflows

meaning, density and humanity was the greatest
challenge of the film.
Directors Biography
Born in So Paulo, Brasil, 1981, Caroline Leone graduated
at the Film School FAAP (Fundao Armando lvares Penteado)
in 2005. She wrote and directed two worldwide recognized and
awarded short films.

Dalva, her first short film, was shot during her film school years in
16mm and won the awards of Best Latin American Film at the 47th
Bilbao International Film Festival (Spain), Best Narrative Film Award
at the Film Gate International Film Festival (USA) and New Talent
Award at the 16th International Short Film Festival of So Paulo. It
was screened in over 15 international film festivals around the globe
getting excellent reviews.

Her second short film, Joyce, shot in 35mm, also had a great response
and was screened in official selections of important festivals, such
as the 57th Melbourne International Film Festival (Australia), the
21st Fribourg International Film Festival (Switzerland), the 19mes
Rencontres Cinmas dAmrique Latine de Toulouse (France), the
2007 Festival de Cinma des 3 Amriques (Canada) among many
others. Joyce also won several awards, one of the most important
ones being Best Film at the 2007 Rio de Janeiro International Film
Festival and Best Director at the 2007 International Womens Film
Festival/FEMINA.
Filmography

Joyce

Joyce is a 12 years old girl that dreams about being a dancer on

TV. One certain night she and her sister Larissa go for a walk. Joyce
meets the guy shes in love with by accident and decides to give him
a love letter.

Joyce talks about hope, wishes and disenchantment. She is a girl

that lives in a very unfortunate environment and yet dreams about
love, happiness, and about being a dancer on TV.

Joyce was shot in So Paulo in some of its remarkable spots. It was

shot entirely on location, on two of the greatest slums here (Favela
Paraispolis and Favela Real Parque). These slums are surrounded by
one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the city and visually represent
the social differences in which we live here. The plot is universal; it
could take place in any given big city, and in any social level. It is a
simple plot, about a young girl that writes a love letter and decides
to give it to the loved one. This way of constructing the narrative, so
that it is not an obviously social oriented film, has the intention of
setting a subtle look to the daily life of this girl in a way that any given
viewer can identify with the plot.

Dalva

Poetic view of a single mothers daily life in the city of So Paulo,

Brazil.

Dalva is a very simple short film. The idea was to create a semi-
documental atmosphere surrounded by daily life poetry. Its the story
of a dream as well as the story of a woman, living her life in a city such
as So Paulo. Its a quiet, inner story.

Dalva is my first short film, shot during my 3rd year at the Film School
FAAP. It was all shot in locations, with film leftovers, no artificial
lighting, no camera equipment and a very small crew. The filming
days were intense, with a complete devotion from all members of
the crew.
