Problem No. 1
(a) A concrete has compressive strength of 4.35 ksi. At what stress, y, will the shown element fail?

(b) The shown biaxial state of stress is obtained from finite-element analysis of a concrete are dam.
Has the concrete failed? The compressive strength is 4.35 ksi.

(c) For a concrete with compressive strength of 5 ksi, calculate the value of stress y that will cause
failure.
Problem No. 2

The attached figure shows five confined concrete cores. All the dimensions are center to center distances.
For each case, fc is 5,000 psi and steel has yield stress of 60,000 psi. Cross-sectional areas are nominally
the same for each section. For each section, establish the stress-strain relationships for unconfined
concrete and for confined concrete by using (a) Mander et al. and
(b) Saatcioglu. Show all of your work.

(a) For each section, plot the unconfined and confined stress-strain relationships from both models on
a single graph. Show the results separately for each case. Clearly, identify the unconfined and
confined relationships, and the models. Discuss the differences and similarities in the models, in
particular the expected confined concrete strength, and post-peak behavior.

(b) For each model, plot the unconfined and confined stress-strain relationships for all the cases on a
single graph. Show the results separately for each model. Clearly, identify the different cases on the
graph. Discuss the influence of core details on the expected stress-strain relationships.
