Rehearsal Objectives
Play correct notes and rhythms from m. 9-43 in Malaguena.
Begin applying style if note and rhythm achievement is
appropriate
Apply pertinent concepts covered in development portion of rehearsal, especially
breathing (tone) and articulation (rhythm) exercises, to music
Personal Objectives
When giving instructions, say What and How, and then apply your strategies.
Dont explain why unless your end cannot be achieved by practical application.
Use hourglass method for rehearsal: Play large chunks to be covered in the
beginning, cut down to smaller chunks to isolate problems, then reinsert them back into
the large context step by step (in their phrase, in the section, in the ensemble, in the
piece)
Listen for mistakes. When they happen, isolate them and fix them. Ensure every
student is achieving performance at an appropriate level before moving on.
Instrumental Development:
Breathing - long smooth breaths
Big sighs, hand on stomach to practice going Bottom to Top
In for 4/Out for 4, 3/3, 2/2, 1/1 - 8 of each
Paper Airplane, Dart, Bow and Arrow - 4 of each - connect to
dynamics
Hum and sing concert F
Concentrate on building tone with a good dart sound, (mf)
Play Concert F together
Balance to tubas. Play with the tubas instead of over them
Tune around the room on concert F
Start in back
Good attack, characteristic tone
Articulation Exercise on Bb
Call and Response
Use Rhythm sheet with rhythms from Malaguena
Emphasize correct style and separation of notes by modeling and
repetition
Malaguena
Play m. 9-43. Rehearse chunks on this section based on their rehearsal
numbers
Play a chunk from between each rehearsal number, isolate
problem spots, reinsert the spot back into the context of its phrase, then insert
phrase back into ensemble
Check for these things. Stay on chunk until these are right:
Correct notes: Make sure students are playing all correct notes for
each chunk with good sounds.
If they arent using strong sounds, recall and
practice the airplane, dart, or bow exercise to encourage good air support
