Introduction
These Release Notes describe the features and enhancements that are new in version 8.0.3 of the
Quantm software. For further support information, go to www.trimble.com/Support/.

Product Information
The Trimble Quantm Alignment Planning system supports road and rail planners and engineers through
the complex process of selecting and generating 3D corridors and alignments. This enables planners and
engineers to reduce project planning time, substantially lower alignment construction cost, and deliver
improved alignments that meet environmental, heritage, urban constraints, and design standards set by
each project. The Quantm system can be applied at every step of the planning process from initial
scoping through feasibility and value engineering. The Quantm systems unique route optimization
technology simultaneously considers the environmental, design, cost, and social factors while it
automatically generates millions of alternative alignments and returns a range of best options for review
by various stakeholders, complete with costing and compliance summaries. The Quantm software
generates outputs to support public presentation through the NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act)
or other planning processes. The final approved alignment can be easily exported using industry

New Features and Changes

The following improvements have been made to the Quantm software.

Average and maximum grade conditions

Grades can now be entered as Sustained Grade and Maximum grade. If both values are the same,
then the Quantm software will handle the inputs as a maximum over the distance specified. If they
are different, alignments will peak at the maximum grade value, however the sustained grade needs
to be met over the distance specified.

Grade breaks
Grade breaks have been introduced to enable users to define what happens when a sustained grade
and corresponding length have been met. Grade Breaks ensure that alignments relax their grade
before reaching an associated critical length.
Due to this, there are now two states a scenario can be in; No Grade Breaks and Grade Breaks. These
options are scenario specific and are set when creating a project, creating a scenario, and duplicating
a scenario. Scenarios can be easily shifted from No Grade Break to Grade Break and back again
carrying through the data from existing scenario and making the relevant changes.
When No Grade Breaks are selected, then the system will handle the distance specified as a sample
distance along the alignment for which the grade parameters need to be met; this is similar to
projects created in the Quantm software before version 8 and hence why any projects updated will
be in this state when opened in version 8.0.3. If No Grade Breaks, the Grade tab in the Geometric
Parameters window allows a list of grade parameters to be specified for uphill and downhill.
However, only one uphill and downhill Active Grade can be selected for use in the scenario at any
one time, allowing for multiple conditions to be specified and tested against easily. This is selected by
right clicking on the desired grade entry in the Grade tab of the Geometric Parameters window and
selecting Active Grade, which places a blue tick next to the entry highlighting that it is the grade
parameter being used for the scenario.
Grade Break scenarios change the tables in the Grade tab of the Geometric Parameters window so
that multiple grade entries can be defined and considered in the table. The first entry in the list is the
condition with which the grade can travel for an infinite length without requiring a grade break. Each
subsequent entry is then met as needed until the largest entry in the table, or an upper limit, is

RELEASE NOTES 4
reached. The upper limit grade defines the maximum grade condition that is to be used in the
scenario. This is selected by rightclicking on the required grade entry in the Grade tab of the
Geometric Parameters window and selecting Upper Limit. This places a dark blue tick next to the
entry highlighting that it is the maximum grade parameter to be used in the scenario. A light blue
tick is placed on all entries below the upper limit to show they will be considered in the scenario. The
Upper Limit does not need to be the largest value, allowing for multiple conditions to be specified
and tested against.
Once the Sustained grade and distance constraints have been met, the Grade Break conditions are
used to force a break in the grade condition. One Grade Break parameter is specified for each
geometry type and is defined by separate uphill and downhill Maximum Grade and Minimum length
conditions.
Note Grade Breaks do not necessarily need to be a flat section; alignments simply need to sit below
the maximum grade for the minimum length specified. This means a transition from uphill to
downhill, or vice versa, is considered a grade break.

The screenshot on the left shows the Grade tab in the Geometric Parameters window with No Grade
Breaks active; the screenshot on the right shows that grade breaks are active.

RELEASE NOTES 5
Enhancements
The Alignment summary report now shows full precision values for quantities of structures and
linear distance.
Maximum desired and maximum exceptions have been removed as part of the Grade Break work.
Only the visible features can be selected in the plan view, previously visible features meant
invisible features in their region could be selected.
Improvements to Sustained Grade Warnings so it shows the actual sustained grade against the
grade being violated, as well as the actual Sustained length against the length being violated.
Turning off HIP and VIP removes all construction lines as well in Plan view.
The number of Horizontal IP (HIP) and Vertical IP (VIP) of each alignment are now displayed in the
Alignment Review and Alignment Summary windows.

Bug Fixes
Fixed sort order of columns in Alignment Summary Breakdown windows so that they are correctly
sorted numerically.
Fixed crash caused by assigning imported feature data as study area.
Changed subgrade slope direction to be consistent with other slope values in the template editor.
Version 8.0.0, 8.0.1, and 8.0.2 projects will be updated automatically when opened in version
8.0.3.
Superelevate check box for subgrade retains its state when active.
Version 8 upgrade from version 6 projects now honors template definitions defined rather than
using the default template.
Removal of maximum desired and maximum exceptions.
Columns in Alignment Review summaries are now aligned correctly with titles.
The ESRI Shape exporter now exports table values greater than 2,147,483,648, previously only
coordinates greater than this number could be exported correctly
Only visible features can be selected in the plan view.
Fixed issue when manually selecting multiple features in the layer view caused the Quantm
software to close without warning losing any unsaved changes.
Alignment summary now shows full precision values for quantities of structures and linear
distance.
Improvements to Sustained Grade Warnings.
Minor updates have been made to some translations.
Video can be recorded in reverse direction in the Visualizer.
Fixed issue with the end of some culverts not being defined correctly in some alignments, causing
long culverts to be placed.
Fixed issue with Google Earth Exporter causing the Quantm software to freeze when exporting
alignments that start or finish in structure.
Fixed issue with dualstructure bridge costs including the cost of constructing the median when it
should not be.

RELEASE NOTES 6
Reference Alignment importer reenabled.
Fixed issue where sight distance and back to back curve properties were not being considered
when processing.
Fixed issue where alignment Cost Settings in the Preference settings did not have any impact
when used.
Fixed crash when saving an alignment from the Alignment Review window.
Fixed issue where subgrade elements in the template editor were not being linked correctly to
other elements, causing an issue where they would shift their location in the template order and
lose their depth when some elements were deleted.
Turning off HIP and VIP removes all construction lines as well.
Fixed issue selecting multiple objects in the layer view, using shift would only hold a maximum of
two objects.
Show the number of HIP and VIP for each alignment in the Alignment Review and Alignment
Comparison dialogs.

Upgrade Procedure
Projects created with earlier versions of the Quantm software should be duplicated before opening
in version 8.0.3.

Upgrading projects from version 7.3

Grade handling
Version 7.3 projects loaded in version 8.0.3 will be loaded with No Grade Breaks active.

RELEASE NOTES 7
Grade parameters will be automatically mapped to the Grade tables in the Grade tab of the
Geometric parameters. Sustained grade parameters in version 7.3 will be mapped to the Sustained
Grade (%) column in version 8.0.3. Design grade parameters in version 7.3 will be mapped to the
Max Grade (%) column in version 8.0.3, and the Sustained grade length in version 7.3 will be mapped
to the Sample Length (m) column in version 8.0.3.
To get these projects to consider grade breaks, the scenario will need to be duplicated and the Use
Grade Breaks option selected.

The screenshot on the left is a comparison of the version dialog to the verison 8.0.3 dialog and how
the different parameters are mapped when updating.

Upgrading projects from version 8.0.2

Subgrade slope definition

The side slope value of subgrade definitions of projects being updated to version 8.0.3 has been
inverted to bring this parameter into line with other template slope definitions.

RELEASE NOTES 8
This screenshot shows how a side slope % of 2 is handled in version 8.0.3:

Median Width includes the Base Width

Note This was fixed in version 8.0.2.
The width definition for median template parameters now includes the base width. In version 8.0.0
and version 8.0.1, this parameter did not include the base width.

Grade handling
Version 8.0.0, 8.0.1 and 8.0.2 projects loaded in version 8.0.3 will be loaded with No Grade Breaks
active.
Grade parameters will be automatically mapped to the Grade tables in the Grade tab of the
Geometric parameters. Sustained grade parameters in version 8.0.0, 8.0.1 and 8.0.2 projects will be
mapped to the Sustained Grade (%) column in version 8.0.3. Max Grade (%) parameters in version
8.0.3 will be a duplicate of the Sustained Grade (%) parameters and the Max Length (m) in version
8.0.0, 8.0.1, and 8.0.2 projects will be mapped to the Sample Length (m) column in version 8.0.3.
To get these projects to consider grade breaks, the scenario will need to be duplicated.

RELEASE NOTES 9
Removal of maximum desired and maximum exceptions
As grade conditions have been changed in this version, the Maximum Desired and Maximum
Exceptions have been removed from the Grade tab and are no longer used.

The screenshots above show the changes between version 8.0.2 on the left and 8.0.3 on the right.

Updates to the Getting Started Guide

Replace the third Note with the following two Notes:
Note Multiple grade ranges can be defined here if required. However, only a single grade range or
an active grade will be considered for the geometry type. To select the active grade from a list of
grade ranges, right-click the desired grade entry and select Active Grade. The active grade entry is
used to define the desired grade entry for the geometry type. A dark blue tick is placed next to the
selected active grade to indicate it is the grade parameter defined for the geometry type.
Note If the Use Grade Breaks option is selected when creating a new project, creating a new
scenario or duplicating a scenario, the Grade dialog above will be different. Grade breaks ensure that
alignments relax their grade before reaching an associated critical length. A change in grade from
uphill to downhill, or vice versa, is also considered a grade break. For grade break scenarios, multiple
grade ranges can be defined and used per geometry type.
