Dear
Edibles Readers,
Growing up in the melting pot
of Hawaii, I never felt like I was
a minority. In fact, I was a large
part of the majority. Being mixed
with both Chinese and Scottish/
English backgrounds, I always
identified with more than one
culture. I also never really felt the
need to dig deep down into my
heritage and roots and immerse
myself in the Chinese culture as
it was just always around me.
I remember in my Junior/Senior
year of high school, I graduated high
school early and my third and fourth
year of high school were the same
year. My English 4 curriculum was
a seventh period after school class
reserved mostly for last-chance-
to-graduate-18-year-old-seniors.
I was used to the advanced
placement classes, but I worked
two after school jobs as well so I
was thrilled to have a cruise class.

The teacher identified my literary
skills and special graduation
circumstances early on and allowed
me to choose any topic I wanted to
study for the semester.
I thought that would be a wonderful

opportunity to learn about my
culture, deep rooted in mystery,
but with a lengthy written history.
I always enjoyed history, and all I
had to do was read a textbook on
a topic of my choosing and write a
report afterwards. I picked Chinese
theology and spent 4 months
reading about Taoism, Hinduism
and Buddhism.
In that giant book, they did not
mention a single word about using
cannabis as a medicine, about
the Chinese being the first to use
cannabis in written history as a
surgical anesthetic, or the mention would like to take the time to invite

Hi Shelly, A topical cannabis oil applied regularly to the spot will usually
cause it to start fading in a few days. It may take several weeks or more to
completely go away. Look for a product with a natural base, such as olive oil.

Dear Gar, I am getting older and try to protect my health. My friend had
prostate cancer and I am now concerned that maybe I should be doing
things to protect myself. I know that medical marijuana can help with
cancer, but what about prevention? Louis Portland, OR

Hi Louis, The role of cannabis in killing cancer is well documented. As far as

prevention, it is just starting to be studied. The prostate has an abundance
of both CB1 & CB2 receptors. The stimulation of these receptors results in
anti-androgenic effects. This means testosterone is blocked from binding
to androgen receptors. Prostate cancer requires testosterone to grow, so
if binding cannot take place, growth stops. By massaging a cream around
the prostate area, the CB2 receptors in the area can be stimulated. For
many, it's as simple as a small amount applied to the prostate area before
bed. Look for a product with a large amount of cannabinoids, 250+ mg per
ounce.

Dear Gar, I am having a lot of foot cramps in the night that are causing
me to not get enough sleep. I started a new job that requires me to be on
my feet 8-10 hrs a day. I have a medical recommendation and my friend,
who is also a budtender locally, said I should write to you. I'll get used to
it, but in the meantime, the cramps and lack of sleep are getting to me. Is

Hi JD, Your budtender friend was on the right track. A topical cream

THE HISTORY
OF CANNABIS
BEGAN
IN CHINA

The ancient history of the cannabis plant
begins in Taiwan and China, and is both
fascinating and shrouded in a bit of myth and
mystery. Historians and researchers arent
entirely positive about some of the dates or
how historical events exactly were recorded in
ancient China, and a number of similarly named
mythological and legendary figures are credited
in stories as having invented or created some
of the same early technological innovations, as
well as sharing some similar heroic feats they
accomplished in Chinas oldest folklore tales.
There are some differences of opinion amongst
archeologists and anthropologists, but generally
they agree on the basic timeline and earliest
records, and the fossil record is hard evidence
that helps to fully illustrate the rich history of
cannabis in ancient Chinese culture. Hemp cord
in pottery was discovered at an ancient village
site dating back to 8000 BC, located in the area
of what is now modern day Taiwan. 2000 years
later in 6000 BC, there is evidence that cannabis

seeds and oil were being consumed
as a food source in China, and 2000
years after that, in 4000 BC, hemp
was being used to create high
quality Chinese textiles.
Not long after that, historically
speaking, legend says that in 2737

by some to be the Father of Chinese
Medicine, and by others to be a
higher deity, Culture Hero, and God
Farmer, and was said to be horned,

Nung is a heroic figure in the

legends of Chinese Medicine and is
credited in some myths of having also
created acupuncture. He is said to have
tasted 365 plants, seeds, and flowers in
his search to discover and explore for
medicinal properties, and cannabis
was among them. In some versions of
the legend, he died from an overdose
upon tasting his 365th plant. The
Shennong Bencaojing, also known as
The Classic of Herbal Medicine, was
a treatise on Chinese Medicine and
had descriptions and entries for the
365 herbal medications discovered by
Shen Nung, who the work is attributed
to. Historians believe The Shennong
Bencaojing was written between
200 and 250 AD, and was a collected
compilation of oral traditions.
Cannabis was one of the 120 plants
covered in the first volume, which

was various upper and noble
drugs that were considered harmless
to humans but beneficial due to their
stimulating properties, including the
psychotropic effects of cannabis. The
Cannabis flower was said to cure over
100 different ailments in the ancient

medical text.
The Yanghai Tombs near Turpan, Xinjiang-
Uighur Autonomous Region, China were
excavated and revealed a 2700-year-old grave
containing a large stash of cannabis, excellently
preserved thanks to the climate of the specific
burial conditions. The Oxford Academic
Journal of Experimental Botany reported that
an international and multidisciplinary team
of scientists was able to demonstrate through
phytochemical investigation and botanical
examination that the ancient cannabis found in
the Yanghai Tomb contained the cannabinoid
Tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC, the
psychoactive component of marijuana.
Bu-Wei Leu's Book of Songs, a collection of
ancient Chinese social customs generally
believed to have been assembled around 300
BC, mentions cannabis as being one of six
crops regularly planted. There is evidence in
The Chinese Canon of Rites, believed by some
to have been compiled by the philosopher
Confucius, that hemp fabric and rope had been
invented in China by 200 BC, and fossil records
prove that 100 years later Chinese hemp paper
had been created. Cai Lun was a Chinese eunuch
and official during the Han dynasty and used
hemp in the composition of paper in the oldest
forms of the modern papermaking process.
Hua Tuo was an ancient Chinese Physician and
Surgeon who lived in The Han Dynasty and was

famous for his exceptional abilities in
acupuncture and herbal medicine. He
is credited with being Chinas first
surgeon and with discovering the
invention of anaesthetic by crushing
cannabis into a fine powder and
mixing it with wine. The Chinese term
for anesthesia is mzui, and literally
translates as "cannabis intoxication."
Hemp was also an important
innovation in the history of Chinese
archery and warfare. Bowstrings
made from hemp were far superior to
the bowstrings that had traditionally
been made from bamboo fiber, and

completely revolutionized ancient
Chinese warfare. Hemp bowstrings
were much stronger and more flexible,
making them far better for long range
archery and eventually being much
more adaptable for using a bow while

would reserve sizeable portions of farmland
specifically for growing hemp, making it the
very first war crop. By 1500 BC, cannabis was
being regularly cultivated in China for both
food and fiber. In his book The Dragons
of Eden: Speculations on the Evolution of
Human Intelligence, famed astrophysicist,
astronomer, and the original host of Cosmos,
Carl Sagan speculated that the cultivation
of marijuana led generally to the invention
of agriculture, and thereby to civilization.
That basically means that the worlds actual
oldest profession, is also the newest and fastest
growing industry in the modern world.
The history of Cannabis is vast, rich, incredibly
intriguing, and it began in Ancient China. It

to Chile

Tilray, which is one of Canadas 38 licensed producers of
medical cannabis, has just announced that it will begin
exporting its product to Chile. The British Columbia-
based company will team with Chilean commercial
producer Alef Biotechnology SpA, which has secured
exclusive rights to distribute Tilrays product. The

first shipment is expected to arrive in Santiago by late
February and will be available in select pharmacies and
hospitals.

This achievement is among the latest in Tilrays

effort to expand in the international market as it was
the first company to legally export medical cannabis
into Australia and the European Union last year. The
company is also involved in several important studies
in using cannabis as treatment for child epilepsy, post-
traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and chemotherapy-
induced nausea.

Other companies that have succeeded in expanding
into the foreign market includes Dutch-based company,
Bedrocan, which is exporting to Canada, Australia
and parts of Europe, and another Canadian company

Whats the difference between
smoking cannabis & eating edibles?

Q: What is the fastest way to get high?
A: Smoking/Vaping: 5 - 10 minutes, THC enters
your bloodstream immediately!
Edibles: 30 - 120 minutes, peak levels reached after
4 hours.
Drinks: less than 30 minutes, quicker than edibles
because they dont have to be digested.
Q: Why do edibles take longer to kick in than
smoking or vaping?
A: When you smoke or vape, cannabinoids go
directly into your bloodstream. Edibles have to
go through your stomach, intestines (GI tract) and
liver before cannabinoids enter your bloodstream,
similar to how food is digested.
Q: Does it matter if I ate a meal right before my
edible?
A: Yes. If your stomach is full you have to wait for
the food in there to move out of the way before the
edible is digested. This results in the edible taking
longer and not feeling as strong. Drinks on the
other hand can drain through your full stomach,
so the effects arent as delayed or diminished.
Q: What is the most efficient way to get high?
A: Smoking/Vaping, approximately 25 to 56% of
inhaled THC enters the bloodstream. Only about
6% of ingested THC, whether ate or drank, enters
the bloodstream.
Q: Why is smoking more efficient than edibles
or drinks?
A: The cannabinoids in edibles and drinks are
degraded by your stomach acid and metabolized
in your liver before they enter your bloodstream.
Inhaled cannabinoids dont begin to breakdown
until they have already been circulated through

than smoking why do they feel
so strong?
A: Edibles and drinks are subjected
to the first-pass metabolism of
your liver. During metabolism
in your liver THC is converted
into 11-OH-THC. 11-OH-THC
is approximately 10 times more
psychoactive and more effective
in crossing the blood brain barrier
than THC. Meaning that edibles
result in a higher concentration
of a more psychedelic compound
than smoking cannabis.
Q: Why do edibles last longer
than smoking?
A: Edibles take longer to make it

result the effects are spread out
over a longer period of time. It
is also believed that the product
from liver metabolism, 11-OH-

There are countless foods we buy that can
last a very long time, like thermally processed
canned foods, diet soda, those protein shakes
that they sell in the shelf stable cardboard boxes,
and dry packaged items like spaghetti and rice.
Those are the long lasting itemsbut there are
many food items that dont last a long time like
fresh baked goods, meat, vegetables and fruit.
These items can spoil fairly quickly when they
are exposed to air, moisture, heat, and other
microorganism friendly weather conditions.
Most microorganisms that cause spoilage in
food are classified as bacteria, yeast or mold.
Bacteria are tiny single-celled organisms that
come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Bacterial
growth cannot normally be seen, but the
resulting damage that occurs when spoilage
bacteria grow in food (bad odors and flavors,
physical changes, etc.) is how we are able to
detect that spoilage has occurred. Yeast and
mold are both members of the fungi family, and
are the cause of more visible spoilage in foods.
Spoilage caused by yeast and mold can be seen
easily as it grows and spreads on the surface of
a food product. Mold is often seen as a fuzzy
colored mass, while yeast will display itself as
a white to pink/red circle on the spoiled food.
But how do these microorganisms get
into your food in the first place? The
microorganisms that are capable of spoiling
food are ubiquitous in nature. They grow
in the soil, land and air and also live on
the skins of fruits, vegetables, animals and
humans. They live inside the intestinal tracts
of animals and can grow on improperly
sanitized kitchen equipment with leftover
residual food from the last production run.
They can be transported directly to food via
unwashed hands and dirty utensils. Spoilage
organisms seek out opportunities to invade
the flesh of any plant or animal tissue that
can provide the specific nutrients and growth
conditions that they need to survive. People

who prepare food for consumption need to
make sure they minimize the environmental
conditions that promote microorganism
growth. Generally speaking, products that
have lots of moisture like meat, fruit and
juices should be kept refrigerated. This will

growth. Products that are typically dry in nature
like granola bars, cookies and candy should be
packaged well to keep the outside moisture out.
If moisture gets into a dry food product, that food
will now be moist and support bacteria growth.
The cannabis edibles industry is typically known
for infusing baked goods and candy for sale at
dispensaries and cannabis shows. These food items
are easy to make and infuse and typically can last quite
a while before going bad. However, as entrepreneurs
become more creative with their food ideas, they
experience more rapid spoilage. Here are a few tips
to slow down mold growth in your food products:
Be as sanitary as possible during the entire production
process: Wash up, wear gloves when handling
post cooked cooled foods and sanitize all your
cooking equipment before and after using. This will
reduce the amount of bacteria, yeasts and mold.
Bake the brownies/cookies till they are very very dry:
Moist baked goods are delicious if you plan to eat
them within 24 hours. However, a moist brownie that
sits on the shelf for a few weeks, has water in it that
can support the growth of microorganisms. The more
water you take away, the harder it is for them to grow.
If you must keep the brownie moist, add preservatives:
Preservatives come in many forms such as potassium
sorbate, sodium benzoate and cultured dextrose.
They are an additional layer of defense that will slow
down yeast and mold even in a moist environment.
Gummy bears should be kept dry too: Those gummy
bears you buy at the store went through a 2-day
severe drying process in special dehumidified rooms
with dehydrators. This is why store bought gummies
dont get moldy. Most entrepreneurs and small
batch manufacturers dont have that type of drying
equipment, so the final gelatin treat retains moisture
and can become moldy. If you cant sufficiently dry
out the gummies you should keep them refrigerated.
Adding extra sugar helps too, it binds up the water
making it unavailable for microorganism growth.
Big food companies spent years trying to extend the
shelf life of their food products. Their food scientists
scrutinize over detail of the product like precise sugar

and soluble solids. They try to adjust those product
details to ensure they do not support bacteria growth.
This type of research takes time and you too will have
to adjust your recipe frequently. By utilizing math,
technical measuring tools and the scientific method

The New Year brings exciting fresh trends on the horizon
with a focus on education and infused dining, The High
Dining Club presented "Sushi Doobie and Roll" this past
January in Southern California.
This exciting dining event was held at the premiere glass
blowing facility Goosefire Gallery located in Orange
County, Ca. Amongst talented glass blowers and a gallery
of glass artwork, beautiful bongs, and exquisite pipes was
the setting for this Asian themed dinner. Diners were able
to view artwork of glass being created while drinking tea
provided by Honey Pot, visiting with Hummingbird Farms
and One Love Delivery Service, who provided flower to
assist in infusing the sushi.
Diners signed up to learn the ancient art of sushi
preparation and the professional on hand was Chef Victor
who trained with a master sushi sensei. Chef Victor works
with a professional sports group as a private sushi chef. His
extensive knowledge of the history, fish quality and the
art of sushi making were apparent as he share a myriad of
information to the eager sushi students.
As guests came in, they were greeted by a kimono clad
hostess who assisted them with creating a Japanese fan to
place at their sushi making station. In the background a DJ
set the mood with music to roll by. The excited guests were
able to see the fresh fish that was just flown in straight from
Hawaii, with crab and lobster from Alaska. The excitement
was mounting as the last student arrived and the Chef was
about to start cannabis culinary sushi preparation.
Chef Victor spoke about the history and tradition while
infusing parts of the rice and sauces. The seafood had
amazing color and freshness to each piece and the students

being enjoyed by students the Asian
Maiden had a crystal bowl of fresh buds
from Hummingbird Farms. Chopsticks
doled out the cannabis to each student
as Chef Victor shared about the process
of grinding the buds, rolling papers
and the art of rolling a good joint.
Some of the guests, though familiar with
cannabis infusion, had never rolled a
joint. To learn about proper grinding
was a revelation as well as about the
different types of rolling papers. Before
long our diverse group of students had
all rolled sushi and a joint and learned
so much about cannabis and its values
for health, well-being and enjoyment.
Chef Victor then went to the sushi bar
and made a vast array of sushi to the
delight of new sushi aficionados.

Who doesn't love great Chinese food? They deliver till 4am, or sometimes 24 hours. What you might
not know, is that there is deep meaning behind each recipe. I've shared with you some of my favorite

Lucky Dank Dumplings

Ingredients:
1/2 pound ground pork
1/2 medium head cabbage, finely chopped
1 green onion, finely chopped
2 slices fresh ginger root, finely chopped
2 water chestnuts, drained and finely chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon white sugar
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 (14 ounce) package wonton wrappers
5 tablespoons canna vegetable oil
3/4 cup water
1 tablespoon chili oil
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon rice vinegar

Instructions:
Crumble pork into a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high
heat until evenly brown. Drain and set aside.
In a medium bowl, mix together the pork, cabbage, green onion,
ginger, water chestnuts, salt, sugar and sesame oil. Chill in the
refrigerator 6 to 8 hours, or overnight.
Place a tablespoon of the pork mixture into each of the wonton
wrappers. Fold the wrappers, seal the edges with a moistened fork.
In a large, deep skillet, heat 3 tablespoons canna vegetable oil over
medium high heat. Place the pot stickers into the oil seam sides up.
Heat 30 seconds to a minute. Pour water into the skillet. Gently
boil 7 to 8 minutes, until oil and water begins to sizzle, then add
remaining oil. When the bottoms begin to brown, remove pot
stickers from heat.
In a small serving bowl, mix together the chili oil, soy sauce, and
vinegar, adjusting proportions to taste.

Alaska Says No to
On-Site Consumption

The Marijuana Control Board in Alaska failed to make
history on February 2nd as a 3-2 vote defeated a proposal
that wouldve allowed cannabis customers to use the
purchased products right at the retail stores selling the
stuff. This proposal wouldve made Alaska the first state
in the nation to allow such freedom of use in cannabis
stores. The rules wouldve allowed customers to try out
their newly purchased products by going into separate
areas of authorized stores.
Board member, Mark Springer, voted against the
proposal out of fear of how the Trump Administration
would react to such a measure as cannabis use remains
illegal at the federal level. Another member named Loren
Jones voted nay due to negative public opinion. However,
the main reason for the defeat is when Sara Chambers,
the acting director of Alaskas Alcohol and Marijuana
Control Office, said that the onsite consumption proposal
was improperly done. Rather than to re-advertise the
measure for another 30 days, the board simply chose not
to pursue it.
Despite this defeat, Cary Carrigan, the executive
director of the Alaska Marijuana Industry Association
which represents Alaskas cannabis industry, pledges
to continue to lobby for the right for the customer to
use their product at stores. He claims that this decision
could have repercussions for out-of-state vacationers,
especially cruise ship passengers, come summer tourist
season. With cannabis consumption being only allowed
on private property and cruise ships forbidding cannabis
being brought on board, tourists would have no place to
legally enjoy their product after purchase. He also argued
that this prohibition will prompt cannabis customers to
consume their product in open public areas.
Last year, Alaska received over 2 million visitors with
over half of them being from cruise ships. According to a

2014-15 study, tourists spent $1.9 billion in Alaska, with
most of the revenue coming from the summer months.
Despite the potential for higher tourist revenue should the
measure have passed, critics of the onsite consumption
proposal are unconcerned as they say tourists dont come
to Alaska solely for the legal marijuana as it is legal in
several other states.

Partners with Local Pet Rescue

Seattles Belltown neighborhood serves as the
beginning of an unorthodox yet beautiful friendship
between local cannabis cultivation company Soulshine
Cannabis and Emerald City Pet Rescue. We wanted
to make sure that our company was giving back
somehow, said Co-founder Mike Mercer who has 18
years of experience in Mortgage Banking.
Soulshine was aiming to donate a percentage of profits
to animal charity due to an interesting connection
between pot and pet, which Mercer claims, one out
of every two people that go into a cannabis retail store
owns a pet. Unfortunately, many were reluctant to
associate themselves with the cannabis industry, with
one potential taker having a board member object to
the partnership by threatening to never donate any
more money.
Luckily, Emerald City Pet Rescue had no scruples
about taking money that came from marijuana sales.
Soulshine has been donating 1% of their gross retail
sales to Emerald City and has done much more.
Vanessa Cason of Emerald City claims, They've been
amazing. Not only do they make significant donations,
but they help out with events, fundraisers, and we get
to help them out with vendor days around the city at
various shops.
The claim of cannabis lovers also being pet lovers
proved to be correct as one of Belltowns retail stores
Have A Heart held a vendor day in which shoppers
fawned over the adoptable rescue dogs brought on
display by Emerald City as they browsed through wide
selections of cannabis products. Mercer and Soulshine
hope that other marijuana companies may follow their
lead and grow cannabis for a cause.

Now we have actual veterinarians supporting this
cause, recommending cannabis treatments to pets to
help them find relief.

Dr. Janice Huntingford is a veterinarian and a certified

pain practitioner working at Essex Animal Hospital in
Vancouver, Canada. Dr. Huntingford has been giving
cannabis oil to some pets dealing with issues like
chronic pain, arthritis, seizures and cancer.

hemp because it does not contain THC, which can be
toxic to animals.

"You would like to get a product that...has very little

THC because dogs and cats are so susceptible to THC,"
Huntingford said.

She went on to confirm it can reduce pain, decrease

seizures and can shrink tumours in pets with cancer.

Dogs and cats have extreme sensitivity to THC, the

psychoactive component of cannabis sativa, which is
why she uses CBD (cannabidiol) for pain management.

"Cats are very sensitive to the CBD, so you have to

dose them differently than dogs," she said. "There's

not a lot of pain meds that we can use for cats, because
they're sensitive to so many things. This one thing that
we can use."
