Introduction
Definition
The length of a normal pregnancy or gestation is considered to be 40 weeks (280 days) from the
date of conception. Infants born before 37 weeks gestation are considered premature and may be
at risk for complications. Advances in medical technology have made it possible for infants born
as young as 23 weeks gestational age (17 weeks premature) to survive.
Risk Factors
Often, the specific cause of premature birth isn't clear. Many factors may increase the risk of
premature birth, however, including:
Having a previous premature birth
Problems with the uterus, cervix or placenta
Smoking cigarettes or using illicit drugs
Poor nutrition
Some infections, particularly of the amniotic fluid and lower genital tract
Some chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure and diabetes
Stressful life events, such as the death of a loved one or domestic violence
For unknown reasons, black women are more likely to experience premature birth than are
women of other races. But premature birth can happen to anyone. In fact, many women who
have a premature birth have no known risk factors.
Epidemiology
According to World Health Organization, more than 60% of preterm births occur in Africa
and South Asia, but preterm birth is truly a global problem. In the lower-income countries, on
average, 12% of babies are born too early compared with 9% in higher-income countries.
Within countries, poorer families are at higher risk.
