This manual provides a step by step procedures, in properly using drill press machine that is located at room SW100,
Mapua Institute of Technology.
Drill Press Operation
A drill press is a tool in any hardware shop. The tools basic purpose is to drill a hole into or

through a material or workpiece. It is a stationary drill that is fixed by bolts to a floor or a stand.

It has five (5) main parts: (1) base, (2) table, (3) column, (4) spindle, and (5) drill head.

The base is a fixed and stable object by which all the parts of the drill press are attached.

The table supports the workpiece or material being drilled. It is attached to the column,

and can be moved vertically to accommodate the dimension of the workpiece. It can also

be rotated to a position perpendicular to the column.

The column supports the table and is fixed to the base.

The spindle holds the drill head in place while it drills the workpiece. To control the

depth and circumference of the hole being drilled, its speed must be adjusted.

The drill head holds the drill bits in place with chucks. Drill bits vary in size and shape, it

depends upon the desired results.

Safety:

Students and/or operators must be aware of the hazards involved. Chips are produced during

drilling operations and must be safely handled. Student and/or operator must wear proper

working clothes and must observe the following rules:

- Do not attempt to operate the drill press until you completely understand the proper

procedures for its use.

- Dress properly. Remove watches and jewelries. Wear your protective personal equipment

(PPE) such as: safety goggles or helmet, gloves, unloose clothing, and closed foot wear.
- Plan out your work before starting.
- Know the ON/OFF button.
- Always remove the chuck key after use. A chuck key that is attached on the left side of

the drill head might be thrown away due to high velocity when the machine is turned on.
- Never stop the spindle with your hand even after you turned off the machine. Chips often

build around the drill head.

- Do not use your hands in removing the chips. Use a brush instead. Turn Off the machine

before cleaning up.

- Remove all burrs from the workpiece.
- Clean the floor area and wipe up any oil spills.

Procedures:

1. Locate the hole by drawing crossing lines.

2. Use a center punch to make a drill point that will be a guide in starting the operation.
3. Select a proper drill bit to be used. It should be according to the size of the needed hole.
4. Secure the drill bit in the chuck/ drill head with the chuck key.
5. Remove the chuck key from the chuck.
6. Select the correct RPM. The size of the bit, material, and depth of the hole must be
considered.
7. Secure the workpiece properly to the table.
8. Check the set-up for proper alignment and security. The drill bit must be aligned to the
center punched of the workpiece.
9. Be sure that the drill bit is not touching the workpiece yet.
10. Wear you PPEs
11. Turn on the drill press.
12. Using the spindle handle, slowly move the bit down to drill the workpiece.
13. Move the handle up and down, to reduce the heat and the breaking of drill bit that can
damage the workpiece.
14. Use lubrication if required.
15. Turn off the drill press to check your progress. If the work is not yet done, continue
working on steps 12 to 14.
16. Turn off the drill press when done.
17. Brush off the chips.
18. Remove the workpiece.
19. Remove the drill bit and place it back to storage.
20. Clean the floor area.
