If youre an avid HWM reader, youll have noticed a trend
over the past few issues. In August, we talked about the
future of smart homes and the Internet of Things. In
September, we focused on software and apps. October was
more of an introspective look at hardware innovation for
new interaction and experiences.
All these topics encompass what has become of, and
what to look forward to, in our connected lives. In this
issue, we tackle the nal, and perhaps the most important
segment of the series, online security.
You see, life used to be easy. Computers, phones, music
players were all individual devices that did what I needed
them to do ofine. None of my devices talked to each other
and being able to access the internet was a privilege. Much
like TV time, online time was regulated. Being a geek rebel
meant many a late night sneaking onto IRC chat rooms
after everyone else was asleep. But, Im digressing.
Whats scary isnt keeping up with the hardware that
has enabled us to so effortlessly stay connected, but
how much of our lives we put online today. And the real
headache comes when you need to keep track of the
web of passwords and backup questions and alternate
authentication methods for every new app or service you
sign up for.
At some point, we try to take the easy way out, because
who has time to wait for a 2FA code every time you want
to check your email right? Wrong!
The world is becoming a more open place because of
the internet, but at the same time it just means were all
the more open to being attacked. If your home has a gated
fence, a guard dog, advanced padlocks with those funky
3D keys, deadbolts and an alarm system, theres no reason
why youd trust just one basic password to protect your
entire digital life.

 There are many ways to build a fast car. One of the most
reliable methods is to cram a powerful engine into a
small car. And the new Audi RS3 Sedan, which was unveiled
at the recent Paris Motor Show, follows this tried-and-tested
recipe closely.
On the outside, the RS3 Sedan looks like a regular A3, but it
has wider wheel arches, fatter tires, a front bumper with larger
intakes, and twin large exhausts. Its all quite subtle, just the
way the Germans like it.
But underneath, the RS3 Sedan gets the same 2.5-liter
turbocharged engine as the re-breathing TT RS, which means
400hp and 480nm of torque. Thats a lot of power for a small
family sedan. The engine is mated to Audis 7-speed S Tronic
dual-clutch transmission, and power is sent to all four-wheels.
The end results are predictably quick, 0-100km/h is
dispatched in just 4.1 seconds. Top speed is electronically
limited to 250km/h. But if unrestricted, the RS3 Sedan will
happily plow on through to 280km/h. These are gures that will

US, China and 21 other countries with
100 percent renewable energy. In 2015,
it powered 93 percent of its operations
worldwide using renewable power.
Closer to home, Apple will be the rst
company in Singapore to rely entirely on
solar power. Apple is working with local
provider Sunseap to source power from
more than 800 rooftops in the city-state.
That will produce enough energy to run
its entire Singapore operations, including

many users are falling into
the common password trap

According to the latest Norton Cybersecurity Insights
Report, one in ve Singaporeans share passwords to their
email, social media and even banking accounts. These
accounts hold valuable personal data and could easily
lead to bigger problems if they fall into the wrong hands.
Furthermore, many users are guilty of re-using similar

fact, some features of WebKit
that Apple uses in its own Safari
browser are unavailable to third-

Youve almost certainly used Chrome, the
stock browser on nearly every Android
smartphone. Chrome may be the default
choice, but its not a bad browser, and
unlike its desktop counterpart, it isnt
a big memory hog. Chrome was the

many other browsers, including tabbed
browsing, the ability to quickly initiate
searches from the address bar, browsing
the web in relative privacy with Incognito

popular and longest running desktop
browsers but its a fairly new entrant to
the mobile platform. Available since 2012,
Firefox for Android is fairly lightweight
with a basic home page without too many

a data compression feature, but it does
have standard bookmark, history and tab
options, and it will save your passwords
too. You can also sync your settings with
desktop Firefox. Theres also a pretty
extensive set of privacy options that allow
you to block advertising networks from
tracking your browsing habits and a nice
night-viewing mode that dims that colors
of webpages to minimize eye strain.
Where Firefox really shines is its great
support for extensions that let you
customize your browsing experience.

OPERA
Opera Mobile is one of the oldest mobile
web browser alternatives available. One
of its strengths is its stability and regular
update cycle, despite recently being
bought over by a Chinese Consortium for
S$821 million.
Opera Mobile is quite similar to
Chrome, and supports tabbed and
private browsing, and also includes a
password manager and auto-complete
tool. Like Chrome, if you sign in with an
Opera account, the app will sync your
browsing session between other signed-
in devices.

inight magazine? You look at the photos and think,
my photos are never that good. Although they use great
photographers, every photo you see in the magazines
has been edited to bring out the best in them adjusting
colors, lighting, cropping etc. can make a good photo
great.
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for Mobile is a mobile
version of the Lightroom desktop application used by
photographers around the world to turn great photos into
masterpieces. Its available on both iOS and Android for
both phones and tablets, and its free!
If you are a photographer or just like taking pictures
with your phone, then this app is for you. Lightroom for
Mobile will allow you to enhance your photos to bring out
the best in them and make them even better. Take it and
Make it!
Recently, I spent a Sunday morning with friends taking
photos of some of the animals at Singapore Zoo. I was
ying out to Taipei the next day, so I loaded the photos
onto my iPad and edited them on the ight. I was pretty
happy with the shots I took, but I know that any photo
that comes out of a camera can be enhanced to make it
really pop.

Lightroom and imported the
photos. You can have a bunch
of Collections to organize your
photos into holidays, or events,
or anything you like.

I sorted through the photos and

deleted the ones I didnt want,
leaving just my favorites.

F Next, I tapped on each photo

and edited it. One of my favorites
is the Orangutan, so lets work
on that one.

All the categories of editing tools

can be found at the bottom of the
screen, and you can step through
them in any order. The edits are
non-destructive so I can go back
and change any setting at any
time.
I like the shot, but I want to
really focus on the Orangutan
and bring the picture to life. So
rst, Ill select the Crop tool and
just crop it in a little. Then I click
the Tick to accept the change
and move on to the Edit section.
For those of you who are
familiar with Lightroom for
desktop, many of the same
tools are available under F Under the Basic panel, I
Edit the Basic panel, Tone selected Highlights and I have
Curve, Vignetting, SplitTone, dropped them right down to
Color / B&W, Dehaze and Lens -100 by just dragging the slider
Correction. For this image, I am with my nger. Next, Im going
just going to use the Basic panel to lift Shadows, drop the Whites
and Vignetting. and Blacks (as my photo is a
little hot), and then raise Clarity
a touch just to add a bit of
sharpness to his fur.

F Already Im pretty happy with

just the few changes that I have
made, but I want people to really
focus on the Orangutan. So, Im
going to move to the Vignetting
section and just add a soft black
vignette to take the attention
away from the bright edges. At F Now that is done, I can
