INTRODUCTION

The Cummins Westport B Gas Plus and B LPG Plus and B Gas International (BGI) engines will replace the
Cummins B5.9 G natural gas and B5.9 LPG propane engines.

The B Gas Plus and B LPG Plus engines contain a new Full Authority Electronic Control Module. The new
Electronic Control Module (ECM), CM556B, is the same as the C Gas Plus engine which has similar features
and capabilities to the ISB and ISC CM554. Like the C Gas Plus engine, the following improvements are
available in the B Gas Plus and B LPG Plus engines: communication via the J1587 and J1939 data-link; wide
range fuel capability (Natural Gas); HD-10 fuel capability (LPG/Propane); enhanced engine diagnostics;
integrated engine and speed controls; knock detection and control; lower emissions; enhanced oxygen sensor
system; humidity sensor implementation; increased engine protection; and adaptive learn technology.

The ratings available for B Gas Plus are 145 KW (195 hp), 149 KW (200 hp), and 172 KW (230 hp). Different
catalysts are required for the various emissions certifications (refer to the specific fuel rating datasheets on the
GCE website). Ratings are available with 2002 EPA/CARB, Euro III, Euro V and Euro EEV capability.

The rating available for B LPG Plus is the 145.414 KW (195 hp). The rating will meet the 10/2002 Consent
Decree conditions imposed by EPA. The B LPG Plus engine requires a different catalyst than the natural gas
engine (refer to the fuel rating datasheet).

The B5.9G and B5.9LPG engines are no longer in production. The BGI or B Gas Plus must now be used for
these export needs.

The ratings available for BGI family are 112 KW (150 hp), 145 KW (195 hp), and 172 KW (230 hp). BGI
meets EURO III and equivalent standards for some worldwide markets, it is not certified to US EPA. Refer to
the fuel rating datasheets for the catalyst requirements.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this technical package is to communicate basic information about the B Gas Plus, B LPG Plus
and BGI engines.

HARDWARE CHANGES

Note: The Cummins Westport B Gas Plus and B LPG Plus share the majority of the design changes from the
previous B5.9G families. The control module was upgraded to CM556 and electronic throttle actuator added.

The BGI product was de-featured and uses the mechanically actuated throttle interface like the B5.9G and fewer
sensors. The low pressure regulator is optional on BGI for OEM applications with fuel systems that can
demonstrate capability to control fuel inlet pressure per the engine datasheet.

The vehicle installation will be impacted by the following additions and changes:

Polybend technology engine control module, CM556B, replacing the CM420.

Combination sensor for oil pressure and temperature
Engine knock sensor
Exhaust back pressure, remote sensor with connector tube and bracket to exhaust connection
Enhanced oxygen sensor and control interface
Humidity sensor, except BGI
23 Pin and 31 Pin OEM connectors and bracket
J1939 and J1587 data-link interfaces
Cummins (Wabco) air compressor
Fuel inlet pressure sensor, except BGI
Combination sensor for fuel inlet pressure and temperature
Electronic PWM throttle actuator, except BGI
Wide range fuel capability per AEB 79.02 (CES 14608)
Fuel control module and housing revisions
Intake manifold cover
Air fuel mixer
Ignition control module and bracket
Air intake elbow
Electronic throttle control with idle validation, except BGI
Engine wiring harness and sensor location changes

FUEL SYSTEM

The fuel specification for use with the B Gas Plus and BGI engine is described in AEB 79.02.
The fuel specifications for use with the B LPG Plus engines are described in AEB 79.03 and 79.04

AIR COMPRESSOR

The Cummins 15.2 CFM Single Cylinder air compressor is available. The air compressor will be the same as
that is offered on the B5.9G and B5.9LPG.

Beginning in 2007 a change was made to require OEM supplied compressor inlet plumbing. Refer to AEB
21.48 for the specific requirements for air compressor inlet plumbing.

TURBOCHARGER MOUNTING ARRANGEMENT

The engine will be offered with LMRO and LMFO turbocharger mounting options. Availability may vary by

ENGINE KNOCK SENSOR

Engine knock sensors are mounted on the side of the cylinder block. This will allow for the engine to detect poor
quality fuels and adverse operating conditions. When knocking occurs the engine can adjust its performance to
prevent excessive wear on pistons and liners.

Note: The knock sensors cannot be relocated or come into contact with any mounting brackets.

WIRING HARNESS

The CM556 ECM required a new wiring harness design. Two OEM interface connectors, a 23 pin and 31 pin by
Deutsch are used. The OEM interface connector brackets are located next to each other at the rear of the
engine. Both connectors are mounted in vertical alignment. These are the same interface connectors That are
used on the C Gas Plus engine.

DIAGNOSTIC LAMPS

These engines require three diagnostic lamps. The Red Engine Protection, Amber Engine Warning, and Yellow
Low Fuel Pressure Lamps are required. The lamps must be visible to the operator. See Application Engineering
Bulletin 15.36 for the detailed specifications.

POWER SUPPLY REQUIREMENT

The B Gas Plus and B LPG Plus and BGI engines have a maximum key on current of 40 Amps, 12 volts. The
engine power must be 12 volt, when using a 24 volt charging and battery system this will require a power supply
device such as a voltage converter or battery equalizer.

See Application Engineering Bulletin 15.35 for the further details.

POWER TRAIN

The B Gas Plus and B LPG Plus and BGI engines have J1587 and J1939 datalink support for communications
with various powertrain devices.

ENGINE SPECIFICATION CHANGES

The B Gas Plus and BGI engine are released as technical configuration number: D493004BX02.

The B LPG Plus engine has technical configuration number: D493005BX02.

OPTION INFORMATION
Option information is available on the GCE website.

NOISE STATUS

Natural gas engines provide a distinct noise signature different from diesel engines. These engines are usually
supplied with a gear driven air compressor. This variation of noise is normal and will not result in durability
problems with the gear train or air compressor.

COOLING SYSTEM

The primary cooling system requirements for these engines have been added to the following documents:
