want to keep this extremely handy bulletin, just hand it to
one of our ushers as you leave. The bulletins are reused

notes
traditional
Why are you like you are? What kinds of things or
experiences have shaped you? To be sure, your family in
your growing up years had great influence on who you
are today. Parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents
have all been instrumental in who youve become. You
have traits of your mother or father, ( just ask a sibling).
To ignore our history is to neglect a significant piece
of understanding who we are, both as a person, and
as a people. This importance of ancestry and history
is most significant in our walk as Christians. Have you
noticed how often in Scripture God has His people
review the history of what He has done for them and
how He has chosen them to be His people? The long
lists of genealogies in Scripture further underscore the
significance of peoples lineage. Never underestimate the
importance, and significance, of Gods call on His people.
The better we understand Gods calling to His people,
Israel, in the largest sense, the better well understand
His calling to us as individuals and as His Church today.
The opening hymn was written in the 1700s by Thomas
Olivers after visiting the Jewish synagogue. He asked the
cantor to write down the tune. He then paraphrased the
Jewish doxology text and added an additional verse of
Christian character. The better we understand our Old
Testament roots, the better we understand who we are as
Gods people today, singing our heritage!
