Role Overview:

The role of Research Projects staff in CSIRO is to collaborate in scientific activities


with other research staff usually by assisting with detailed planning, undertaking or
assisting with experimental and observational work, and in carrying out the more
practical aspects of the work. At senior levels, Research Projects staff may be
involved in providing consulting services, science management and/or industry
liaison.
CSIRO Mineral Resources is seeking a geospatial data experimental scientist with
experience in the development and design of geospatial data and products for their
distribution within CSIRO as part of a project portfolio, and for external clients
including the minerals industry and government agencies.
The person will be responsible for working with project scientists and multi-
disciplinary research teams and external stakeholders to ensure the effective
application and integration of geospatial data in a range of projects. You would be
responsible for integrating programme data flows and assisting with data utilization,
storage and interpretation. This role also involves participation in the formulation
and implementation of policies regarding spatial data management, and the
communication and publication of geospatial studies.
Duties and Key Result Areas:

Aiding research scientists with GIS queries and producing maps.
Communicate effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in
the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of
CSIROs reputation.
Work as part of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed research team, to
carry out tasks autonomously in support of scientific research.
Work collaboratively with colleagues within your team, the business unit and
across CSIRO, to reach objectives.
Set-up and/or maintain effective and efficient work teams, allocate and manage
resources and undertake staff performance management and career
development.
Choose appropriate management strategies and communication styles to
maintain high levels of motivation and productivity, give feedback for
development purposes and provide support and direction for improvement, as
required.
Adapt and/or develop original experimental methods/equipment/
software/concepts/ideas in support of existing and further research.
Adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIROs Values, Health, Safety and
Environment plans and policies, Diversity initiatives and Zero Harm goals.

Selection Criteria:

Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed
Pre-Requisites:
1. Education/Qualifications: A Bachelors degree and/or equivalent research
experience in a relevant discipline area, such as science, geology, data
management or geographic information systems.
2. Communication: High-level communication skills, both written and oral,
including the ability to anticipate the interests and knowledge level of an
audience and present information and feedback accordingly.
3. Behaviours: A history of professional and respectful behaviours and attitudes
in a collaborative environment.
4. Adaptability: The ability to effectively manage a number of competing
priorities simultaneously, and carry out non-routine tasks independently.
5. Problem Solving: Proven ability to investigate underlying issues of complex
and ill-defined problems and develop appropriate responses by
adapting/creating and testing alternative solutions.
Essential Criteria:
1. Demonstrated experience in the application of integrated Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) analyses to address and solve scientific problems
in the minerals industry and in a research environment.
2. Advanced programming skills, particularly using Python and Structured Query
Language (SQL).
3. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain geoscience data in
Geographical Information Systems such as ArcGIS, including analysis
techniques and data modelling of multi-disciplinary data.
4. Demonstrated experience working with RDBMS such as Postgres and SQL
Server.
5. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, providing advice to
researchers and external stakeholders in spatial data collection and
management, geographical analysis, spatial modelling and geo-visualisation.
6. Proven ability in the production of data layers, maps, tables, or reports, using
spatial analysis procedures or Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
technology, equipment, or systems.
7. Proven ability to format, load and manipulate data in a 3D processing and
visualisation environment such as GoCAD, Leapfrog, or equivalent.
8. Advanced remote sensing image analysis and interpretation experience,
including manipulation of spectral, radiometric and geophysical data.
Desirable Criteria:
1. Demonstrated ability to develop and continue to improve research
programme-specific policies, guidelines and procedures with regards to
database protocols.
2. Proven skills in written and oral communication.
3. Record of scientific papers published (individually or jointly) in international
journals.
