SCVCS Student Spotlight: MICHAEL NICHOLS
Michael Nichols has been interested in firefighting for years, and now
is a junior firefighter. He is on track to become certified. He said, I became inter-
ested in becoming a Firefighter when I was a little boy and I got an antique fire
truck from my Paw Paw. I have always had two loves: The Marine Corps and the
Fire Dept. The fire program helped me get into the Fire course at the Career Cen-
ter, and if I complete two years I will come out certified. Michael went on to ex-
plain how firefighting has evolved over the years. He said, Firefighting has
evolved from just fighting fires to hazmat operations and medical emergencies.
We can understand that Michael will have a background not only in fighting fires,
but in these other important areas as well.

As with anything, there are pros and cons to firefighting. When asked about
these pros and cons, Michael explained, The pros are being able to save
someones life or property, helping
my community and riding the big
trucks. The cons are I could lose my
life and you cant always save a
persons life or their home. I have
made good friends, brothers, with
people who are like minded with
myself. He also mentioned how he
reaches out to others wanting to
get involved with firefighting. Mi-
chael said, I give them a tour of
the station, I talk to them about join-
ing a program with their local Fire
Dept. and try to answer any ques-
tions they may have.

Michael is definitely an asset

to his community and Im sure he
will succeed in fighting fires. In clos-
ing, Michael gave some tips for stu-
dents aspiring to get involved in fire-
fighting. He stated, Lift weights
and cardio, get comfortable with
heights and tight spaces, join a lo-
cal fire program, get comfortable
with heat, and get comfortable
with blood and the deceased.
Thanks Michael, for what you do.
SCVCS Student Spotlight: JASPER ROGERS
Jasper Rogers is a student at SCVCS who enjoys bowling. He became in-
terested in bowling when his mother would take him and his brother to a local
bowling alleys free summer program. Jasper became more seriously involved in
bowling last fall when he joined a league. Jasper describes bowling as an indoor
sport where scoring can be induvial or by team.

Jasper feels bowling is an enjoyable sport that can be a fun social event for all ag-
es and skill levels. He enjoys being able to hang out with kids his age. Jasper says
that the one negative to bowling in a league is that he has to get up early on Sat-
urday mornings and be at the bowling alley on time.

Before Jasper began bowling he played baseball with his church league but
eventually he became too old to play in that league. He was excited when he re-
alized he could be on a bowling team with people his age without having to try
out. Jasper says that his coaches and teammates have helped with his bowling
techniques and because of that his game has improved greatly. His average
score is 187! Being on a bowling team has helped Jasper become a stronger per-
son physically and mentally. He is happier now because he can socialize with
team and league members.

Jasper says
the best thing
about bowling
is that it is an
indoor sport so
he can partici-
pate year
round and he
very much en-
joys hanging
out with his
teammates. If
it were up to
him he would
bowl more of-
ten. Way to
go, Jasper!
SCVCS Advisor Spotlight: CHRIS WALKER
My name is Chris Walker and I am a school counselor at SCVCS. I live in Fort

Mill now after living in Chapin South Carolina for around 10 years. I am married and
have 3 kids. Drew is 8 and I have twins, Harrison and Charlotte, who are 4 years old.
They keep me very busy but in my free time I love to play golf and hike. I also am a
huge Clemson fan and go to as many
football games as I can. Go Tigers!

I went to Clemson University for my un-

dergraduate degree and studied Psy-
chology. I also attended USC and got
my Educational Specialist degree in
school counseling. I have been counsel-
ing for 4 years now and my caseload in
9th through 11th graders with the last
name staring with D through F. I love
working at SCVCS for a ton of reasons,
first is the people I work with. The office is
so much fun and always willing to help if
you have a question or are in a bind.
Next, I love working with my students
and parents. They are the reason we as a school do this and to see how much they
work and how many obstacles they overcome to be successful with us is so reward-
ing. Last I want to say I love working with all of our teachers. They are so easy to work
with and when I need something extra like a makeup plan or extra help for a student
I have never been told no I cant do that for a student. It is so easy to work with peo-
ple like this and am grateful for my time helping students.

Thank you, Chris. We appreciate all that you do for your students and the staff at
South Carolina Virtual Charter School!
