Video clip The making of

For our video clip, we have chosen to use the song Shape of you, by Ed Sheeran.
The song was released on January 6, 2017. The song, which is currently on the
first place of the Dutch top 40, sold 240,000 downloads and gained 20 million
streams in its debut week in the US.

Shape of you is a catchy pop song, which Ed Sheeran initially wrote for Rihanna.
However, once he finished the song, he decided he was going to keep it for
himself. It is not only the intimate guitar sound Ed Sheeran became famous with
we hear in the song. For Shape of you, he has added a few tropical-house
flourishes like the marimba sound. This xylophone-like sound can be heard
straight away when the song begins. Together with the piano and the guitar, this
creates a catchy, techno sound at 96 beats per minute. Over this sound, Ed
Sheeran is using his voice in a calm way. His vocals are in between G3 and G5,
and sometimes so fast it gets close to rap. An example of a fast sentence is
when he sings Me and my friends at the table doing shots drinking fast and then
we talk slow. The song Shape of You is written in the key of C minor, a key used
more often by pop artists including Nicki Minaj and Kanye West. The song is
organized verse, pre-chorus, chorus, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, chorus.
This is the organization that is used in most pop songs, as it makes the song easy
to remember because the chorus often comes back. When listening to the song,
it makes us move to the beat. The catchy sound makes us want to knock on the
table with your fingers, and makes sure the song does not get out of your head.
The song tells the story of Sheeran meeting a girl in a bar where he and his
mates are doing shots, and how they then get along. He emphasises on his
love for the shape of the woman, as the title also makes clear. As the lyrics really
tell a story, they make you think about how you met your loved one, or maybe
about your last visit to a bar.
To make our video, we want to mostly follow the lyrics and try to portray the
story Ed Sheeran is telling us. We want to try to add meaning to the story with
our images. The first image is of the three boys going to a bar, just like Ed
Sheeran is doing in his song. After this, the two main characters (Ed and the girl
in the song) start talking. We do not want this to be a physical chat, but an online
one. We want to show this by filming a phone which is receiving and sending
back messages. In the song, Ed Sheeran then sings about the shape of the girl
he is in love with. In order to emphasize this, we want to film the shadow of a girl
because in a shadow, we can only see a shape of a person. This shadow will be
our primary motive throughout the video. Furthermore, we want to film in a car
to show the kiss in the backseat and try to create the shadows with a lamp.

As you can see in our Freytags pyramid the climax is the kiss in the backseat,
around 2:00. With the messages and the shadows getting closer and closer
together, we want to build up tension towards this point. After this, we want to
show the result of the climax by filming what the boy and girl are doing
together. The shadow we are going to use could be seen as a metaphor: the
shape represents the person, but also emphasises the shape of the girl.

We want to tell the story from the perspective of someone from the outside, he
or she does not play a role in the video but sees everything thats happening. We
will change the perspective when we film the phone with the messages, as the
audience will see this part through the girls eyes. In the song, not everything is
meant literally of course. An example of this is the talking about the sweet and
the sour. In order to attract the attention of the audience to the lyrics, we want
to show this part in a literal way by showing something sweet and something
sour. Here, we want to make the figurative literal.

As the song is a love song, our video will be a romantic video. However, with the
shadows, we want to make it a little abstract, and not just two people meeting
each other.

they are saying. We might decide to add some shadows of the boys as well,
because that is our metaphor and in this way we could bring it back as a motif.

Because this is the last part of the song, we decided to show short parts of all the
things we have shown in the film. We have not decided which parts we will show
with this, but it is an idea to show the love story that boy 1 and girl 1 have been

The making of

Monday January 9, 2017: Today, the assignment was made clear to us. We chose
the song Shape of you, which had just been released three days before.

Monday January 16, 2017: Today, we started brainstorming. We got a paper and
drew our ideas on it. We also started thinking about what we want to film and
how we are going to do this.

Thursday January 19, 2017: Today, we went outside to see where and how we
want to film. We also took some short videos to see which ideas were working
well and which were not.

Monday January 23, 2017: Today, we filmed the messages coming in in class. We
took Angelas phone, and Noa was sending the messages to her.

Thursday January 26, 2017: Today, we went to the Studiezaal to start working on
the questions we have to hand in on Friday 27.
