RR: Unplugged Class Script

Winter 2015 Week #16

**These classes are to be performed with a Conductor and Co-
Conductor, accompanied by just the acoustic guitar and
without wireless mic headsets. The Theater curtain should be
closed to conceal the RR keyboard, drum kit, and sound
system. The mp.3 player will need to be hooked up prior to the
start of class and the cord run through the curtain. The guitar
stand will also need to be placed in front of the curtain.

*Please note, for these classes, most of the instructions should

be geared toward the adults in the class. You want to always
suggest or demonstrate ways for them to interact with the
youngest children in the class. Keep in mind that adults may
be a little uncomfortable at first; that is okay, they will develop
a comfort level over time; encourage the adults to participate,
but do not push them.

Music Cue: Rockin Railroad Instrumental track (SFX)

plays on mp.3 player hooked up to Theater sound system

(The doors open to let class begin, as recorded Rockin Railroad

Instrumental track continues playing. Co-Conductor is greeting
class members as they enter. The Conductor and/or Co-
Conductor direct each infant/grown-up pair to the ABC rug.
Wiggle mats should be made available as options for them to
take and use if desired. Teachers can also let grown-ups know
that they can bring their own from home if theyd like.)

*Please be aware of volume of singing voices and acoustic
guitar. Conductor and Co-Conductor can sit/kneel during this
segment to stay at audiences eye level.

Conductor: And this journey is really special because its totally

unplugged for our tiniest passengers! Please sing and move along
youll always be able to follow us!

*As the semester progresses, instructors should let the grown-

ups know that, as songs and segments become more familiar,
they should definitely sing and move along (echoes and
mimicry) for and with the babies.

Conductor (cont.): My name is <conductor> and I will be your

Conductor today, and I want to introduce you to my rockin crewmate!
This is <co-conductor>, who is going to be my Co-Conductor today. I
want everyone to sing hello like this - Hello, <co-conductor>!
Co-Conductor: Hello <co-conductor>!
Conductor: And now everybody, we cant forget each other. I want
you to turn to your neighbor and sing, Hello neighbor!
All: Hello neighbor!
Conductor: Well, I hope youre all ready for the ride. Now, if youre
feeling good, let me hear you say, Choo Choo.

(Co-Conductor does pulling train whistle motion on responses and

points to audience to repeat)

adults to have them help their little ones make the arm
movements along with the song.

Conductor: Today were going to have an awesome time on the (sung
w/guitar playing) Rockin Railroad. Well head out soon to visit Izzy
and Grandma, but first we need to say hello and let our passengers
introduce themselves!

music cue: Conductor starts A Big Hello to Me vamp

on guitar

(Co-Conductor grabs bucket of mirrors and brings to the center

of the ABC rug. He/she takes one mirror to the each
child/grown-up pair and hands the mirror to them. After
everyone has a mirror, Co-Conductor should place bucket on
either Instrumentville or Grandmas House table top.)

A Big Hello to Me
(see MP3 and lyrics)

Co-Conductor: Its so great to see you all. Were glad youre here with
us today. Now, lets keep on rockin with those mirrors. Were going
to sing a song called Wheres Your Nose?!

music cue: Conductor then begins Wheres Your

Nose? vamp on guitar

Co-Conductor: Grown-ups, please sit your little ones in your lap and
help hold up their mirrors so they can see themselves. When we ask,
Wheres your nose? in the song, point to your little ones noses.
Well ask about some other parts of the face and head, too, so be
ready to find those! Ill come around and help!

Wheres Your Nose?

(see MP3 and lyrics)
Co-Conductor moves around the circle to help point out the different
parts of the face/head.
*Conductor and/or Co-Conductor should decide before each Unplugged
class which 2nd and 3rd parts of the face and/or head theyll be using for
that particular section (i.e. eyes, mouth/lips, cheeks, chin, ears, head,
hair). Always start with the nose; but, the other parts of the face and
head should be rotated each week.

RR: Unplugged Class Script
Winter 2015 Week #16
***As the semester progresses, Conductor and/or Co-Conductor
can suggest a rotation of OTHER parts of the body to include in
the song (i.e. arms, hands, legs, feet, toes, etc.) for the 2nd
and 3rd verses.

Co-Conductor: Hey, thanks for trying out these awesome mirrors,

passengers! Now, could you all help me clean them up?
Conductor: Of course we can!

music cue: Conductor then begins Clean Up Time vamp

Co-Conductor: So lets get up on our feet and do some dancing to get

this train movin! Its okay to remain seated, but if you can, please join
us in our movements!

(Co-Conductor should be sure to reference the specific lyric sheet for

the relevant weekly movement song which contains instructions
unique to Unplugged for that particular movement song. These should
be briefly explained during the songs intro over the guitar vamp
and/or reiterated during the song as it progresses.)

Instrumentville! I love coming to Instrumentville because of all the
great instruments they have here (points at the wall of instruments),
but only one of these will be on sale today.
(Co-Conductor enters with/as Izzy)

Conductor (cont.): I wonder which one it will be.

Izzy: (in a cool dude kind of voice; Co-Conductor should stay visible
with the puppet, i.e. Avenue Q-style) Hey there, <conductor>! Need
any help?

*Izzy can encourage the grown-ups to have their little ones
mimic his dancing during the song (i.e. Izzy: Hey, grown-ups, try
and have your little ones dance like me!)

(Conductor should put down his guitar immediately after the song is
over and cross to grab the Special Delivery Package from
Instrumentville for the next segment.)

Izzy: Well, I just received a very special delivery containing the

instrument that is on sale this week! <Conductor>, could you grab the
special delivery package for me, please?

Variations:
1) Play instrument up high/down low
2) Loud/Soft volume exploration
3) Fast/Slow tempo exploration

Conductor: Everybody play along with your <drums> and try to

mimic what Im doing! Grown-ups, you can also hold the <drums> in
the little ones hands and play along right with them let them feel the
rhythm! When you hear me say GO, play along; but when you hear
me say STOP, youll freeze!
Ready? GO:

(chant should be done rhythmically a steady quarter-note beat,

starting with a slow tempo that they can comfortably follow and
imitate and then easily keep up with if it speeds up)

Conductor (cont.):
You <play>, and you <play>, and you <play> and <play>.
You <play>, and you <play>, and you <play> and STOP! Freeze

puppet hand.)

Clean Up Time
(see MP3 and lyrics)

(Co-Conductor stays in the middle of the class holding the bucket and
dancing until the song is over.)

Izzy: Thanks so much everyone! I hope you had fun!

Conductor: Everyone say bye to Izzy!
(puppet waves goodbye, ad-libs well-wishes, etc; and then Co-
Conductor crosses to Instrumentville table with puppet and clean-up
bucket which are put away underneath.)

Conductor: We had so much fun at Instrumentville, but now we've

got to visit Grandma across the street.

9
RR: Unplugged Class Script
Winter 2015 Week #16
Co-Conductor: Alright, everyone, follow me to our next destination-
Grandmas House!

music cue: Conductor starts vamping Grandmas

House on guitar

(While Conductor plays guitar, Co-Conductor should sit front-and-

center to demonstrate the lap movements over the vamp for
Grandmas House BEFORE launching into the song.)

*As the semester progresses, a lengthier demonstration will

not be needed for the lap movements. Use your best judgment
on when to implement in entirety (particularly for the first few
weeks of a semester or half-semester; or if you have a lot of
make-ups and/or trials scheduled).

Co-Conductor: Grown-ups, please put your tiny passengers in your

laps now and follow along. Lets start off with a bounce to the beat like
this (demonstrates general bouncing movement). Now, try this motion
when we get up and go from Instrumentville (demonstrate knees
walk up). Then, lets do this when we get down to Grandmas house
(demonstrate knees walk down). To cross the street, well look and
lean this way (demonstrate lean to left), and then well look and lean
the other way (demonstrate lean to right). And, finally, well roll back
on Go! (demonstrate roll back motion). Grown-ups if youd rather
and are more comfortable while your child sits in your lap, you can
rest them against your chest; then, grab hold of the back of their legs
above the knees; and lift them slightly as you lean back (demonstrate
over vamp). Okay, ready? Here we goooo

Grandmas House
(see MP3 and lyrics)
**this should be played with a slower tempo for Unplugged
classes, especially at the beginning of respective semesters
*Lap movements below:
1. (Were here) bounce to the beat
2. (But now its time) knees walk up to beat
3. (Down to Grandmas House) knees walk down to beat
4. (She lives across) bounce to the beat
5. (To look to the left) look/lean left
6. (then look to the right) look/lean right

10. (Knock knock) bounce bounce

**Make sure Co-Conductor is encouraging class to do motions.

Conductor AND Co-Conductor should always be singing along.

(Co-Conductor should stand up and move to Grandmas House to

prepare puppets entrance AFTER the second set of [Knock knock]
bounce bounce lines and movements)

*Magic Mailbox is sitting on top of the table at Grandmas House.

Grandma: (Grandma puppet should ascend w/music after the line,

Oh Grandma and land on hooray! Co-Conductor should stay
visible at all times during segment.) Hello, deary! Im so glad you and
your friends are here! I was just coming out to check the mail.
Conductor: Oh Grandma, I wonder if you got a letter today. Can we
help you check?

music cue: Conductor starts vamping Magic Mailbox

on guitar

Grandma: Of course you can! In fact, this is no ordinary mailbox this

is a Magic Mailbox! But I need your help to make the magic happen.
(Co-Conductor as Grandma takes out scarves and passes around to
class)

Grandma (cont.): Everyone take one of these special scarves and

wave them around, and well see if we can make a letter appear inside!
Conductor: Alright everyone, wave your scarves side to side!

Magic Mailbox

Letter: T
Movement: Twist

music cue: the Conductor should continue vamp on

guitar after Grandma reveals the letter so that

11
RR: Unplugged Class Script
Winter 2015 Week #16
Grandma can then introduce the sound AND movement
that corresponds with the letter.

Grandma: <T> makes a(n) <Tremendous> sound.

(Grandma demonstrates spoken sound over vamping)

Grandma (cont.): Can everyone try and make that sound with me?
Grown-ups, your little ones learn and make their first sounds by
watching and hearing you; so, lets all say the sound of the letter <T>
together, please!
(Grandma demonstrates spoken sound over vamping, this time with
the grown-ups help)

Grandma (cont.): And, hey, why dont we also try to sing it? Sing
<t>a, <t>a, <t>a, <t>a, <t>a, <t>a
(Grandma leads singing of the letters sound over and along with the
vamping by adding an ah vowel sound to the letter. The band keeps
vamping and singing the sound while Grandma continues.)

Grandma (cont.): What can we do that starts with the letter <T>?
Oh, I know lets all <Twist>!

Grandma should encourage grown-ups to demonstrate by

<twisting their hips while holding their babies>. They might
also <hold the little ones at their trunks while their feet to
touch the ground and their hips side to side>, if comfortable!

Conductor: Wow, that was so much fun. I love the letter <T>!
Grandma: Im so glad you had fun!
Conductor: Grandma, we love coming to visit you especially because
of your great stories! Do you have one to sing to us today?
Grandma: I sure do! Its one of my favorite books! <Five Little
Ducks>!

music cue: Conductor begins to vamp book tune on

guitar

(Grandma brings out copies of the board book of the week)

Grandma: And I even have enough for everyone to read along with
me!

12
RR: Unplugged Class Script
Winter 2015 Week #16
(Grandma should hand out books to everyone in the class. Both
Conductor and Co-Conductor should be seated at the center of the
class and motion for everyone to get closer for this segment. Co-
Conductor as Grandma will share a copy of the book with the
Conductor as he/she is playing the guitar. The book should lie flat on
the floor and have pages turned from that position.)

Grandma: Grown-ups, remember to follow along with us as we sing.

You can also wave those scarves along to the music for your little ones!
Here we go!

Grandmas Storytime: Five Little Ducks

(see MP3 and lyrics)

Conductor: Wow, that was so much fun. Thank you, Grandma!

Grandma: Youre welcome! Before I forget, will you all help me clean
up our books and scarves?

music cue: Conductor should lightly vamp Clean Up

Time until all scarves and books have been collected.
Conductor and Grandma should sing just the chorus.

Clean Up Time (reprise)

(see MP3 and lyrics)
(A separate container will be needed to clean up the Unplugged board
books so that the Co-Conductor as Grandma can carry it around the
room one-handed while the Conductor will be playing guitar. After
props are cleaned up, they can be stored again under the Grandmas
House table.)

Conductor: Hey, I think our passengers may be getting sleepy.

Grandma: Oh <conductor>, I think they might need a nap before you
get back on the train!
(Conductor kneels on the floor)

Grandma: At Grandmas, if you close your eyes and dream of

something using your imagination ...

13
RR: Unplugged Class Script
Winter 2015 Week #16
music cue: Conductor should play a C chord at the 10th
fret position to emulate chimes. The guitar can then
begin to vamp the intro to Imagination (optional to
just vamp on the C chord while talking).

Grandma (cont.): youll see that you made wonderful thought

bubbles appear when you wake up! Its time for me to say goodbye
now, but I cant wait until you visit me again!
Conductor: Goodbye, Grandma! Thanks, we had so much fun with you
today! Well see you next week!
(Grandma waves goodbye, ad-libs well-wishes, etc; and then Co-
Conductor crosses to Grandmas table with puppet and puts her away
underneath)

*As the semester progresses, Conductor can suggest a rotation

of lying positions for the little ones 1) on their backs; 2)
tummy time; 3) leaning back on their grown-ups bent knees.

Conductor: (while still kneeling on the floor) Alright passengers, lets

try what Grandma said. Lets all take a little nap. Grown-ups, if your
little one is comfy, lie them down and well play a bit of peek-a-boo
while thinking of something using our imaginations. Okay, on the count
of one, cover their eyes, and then on three well get a big surprise! 1:
cover their eyes 2: no peeking 3: PEEK-A-BOO, uncover those eyes!
(Co-Conductor blows streams of bubbles in the air to fill the room.)

Conductor (cont.): Oh boy, look at all of these wonderful thought

bubbles!
*Conductor can let the grown-ups know if they seemed
concerned that our bubbles are non-toxic (made with a sugar
base), and they are completely safe for the babies. Co-
Conductors, please make sure to blow a small amount of
bubbles into the air at the start of this section as to not
overwhelm the babies (and the grown-ups).

Imagination
(see MP3 and lyrics)

Co-Conductor: That was so much fun! I just love bubbles so much.

Conductor: Well, grown-ups, keep those little ones lying down if
theyre comfy, because here comes our

Music cue: Conductor starts to vamp Lets Meet Under

the Parachute on guitar

*Please note, Co-Conductor takes out the parachute (from

under either the Instrumentville or Grandmas House table)
and has the grown-ups hold on around perimeter if theyre
baby is comfortable lying on the floor/their mat. The grown-
ups should remain kneeling. Conductor can opt to stand
beside the parachute or be kneeling at the babies level.
Please be aware of volume of playing and singing during this
segment, as the babies may be separated briefly from their
grown-ups and should not be overwhelmed.

*Conductor should put down guitar for this segment ONLY if there are
not enough grown-ups to help the Co-Conductor to hold the parachute.
If no guitar, Lets Meet Under the Parachute and the weekly
Parachute Song can be sung a cappella.

Lets Meet Under the Parachute

Aaaand, STOP hold the parachute still!
(shaking can be repeated several times, as long as the babies are
comfortable)

Co-Conductor: Now, lets drop the parachute a little lower.

(parachute drops slightly to set up a peek-a-boo game between grown-
ups and babies) Okay, ready? Say, Peek. A. Boo! (lift the
parachute again to reveal the grown-ups to their little ones) Hello,
there, little ones! And back down a little lower again. (parachute
drops slightly for peek-a-boo) Ready? Peek. A. Boo! (lift the
parachute again to reveal the grown-ups to their little ones) Hello,
