How to Approach Reasoning Section for IBPS PO Pre 2016

Exam?

The Main focus of Candidates now is on IBPS PO 2016 Exam . Now the time has
come to act with sincerity & positive mind which will surely gain your day.
Remember, you would only get a call for next phase i.e. IBPS PO 2016 Exam once
you clear the overall cutoff and sectional cutoff ofeach section (English,
Reasoning and Quant).
Reasoning is the most scoring section in the exam. Many of you are comfortable
and have good command over reasoning section. Some candidates dont know
how to tackle this section and always start with the rst questions or with Seating
Arrangement or puzzle types questions.
In order to be successful and score more in this section, you need to focus on
three important aspects during the exam:
1. Accuracy Always try to attempt the questions with 100% accuracy. As you
know negative marking system exists in this exam, which is why you must ensure
that you answer each question correctly. Attempting questions withaccuracy will
increase chances of scoring high and help you to clear the sectional cutoff.
2. Speed Try to maintain constant speed during the exam otherwise you will lose
your valuable time.
3. Which topic you should attempt in ReasoningSection? As banking exams are
all about accuracy and speed, you never skip any one of the above aspects if you
are looking to score well. But the catch is that your speed and accuracy in the
exam depends a lot on questions you attempt rst.
Tips to Score more in Reasoning Section
The Reasoning section of the SBIPO Prelims exam consists of questions such as
-Syllogism, Coding Decoding, Inequality, Seating Arrangement (Circular,
Square), Linear Arrangement, Puzzle and Miscellaneous Questions which
includes Blood Relations, Ranking, Direction Test, Alphanumeric Series, etc.
Here are some of the key things that you need to take care of. Lets understand
them one at a time.
1.If you have good command over this section than always aim to attempt
maximum (25) questions during exam, which will help you in scoring high and
leads you to clear overall cutoff of the exam.
2. Dont be over con dence while solving the questions.
3. Try to attempt reasoning section in mid of the exam, which will maintain your
speed and you will never feel nervous for other section.
4. You can start with those topics in which you have good commandwhich seems
easy in the exam. For ex Syllogism, Inequality, Coding Decoding, Blood
Relations, Ranking, Direction Test, Alphanumeric Series, etc.
5. Never start Reasoning section with Seating Arrangement and Puzzle types
questions. If you stuck on it you will lose your valuable time.
Here we are providing tips for some topics -
1. Syllogism These types of questions contain two or more statement and these
statements are followed by the number of conclusion. You have to nd which
conclusions logically follow from the given statements.
Tips to solve this type of Question in exam
(i)Read the statement carefully and choose the correct options which satisfy the
given conclusion.
(ii)Try to solve questions with Venndiagram which is an easy method to solve
syllogism questions.
Important Rule:
1. Possibility cases in Syllogism In possibilities cases, we have to createall
possibilities to nd whether the given conclusion is possible or not. If it is possible
and satis es the given statement than given conclusion will follow otherwise
conclusion will not follow.
2. Restatement is not a conclusion Conclusion has to be different from the
statement.
Note: If statement and conclusion is same then, conclusion does not follow. This
rules also follows in possibilities case
3.Complementary Pairs: (Either & or) Either and or cases only takes place in
complementary pairs.
Conclusions: (i) Some A are B. (ii) No A are B.
From the given above conclusions, it is easy to understand that one of the given
conclusions must be true, which is represented by option either (i) or (ii). These
types of pairs are called complementary pairs.
All A are B & Some A are not B are also complementary pairs.
Note:It is important to note that, in complementary pairs, one of the two
conclusion is true and other will be false simultaneously.
For e.g.
Statement:All A are B. Some B are C.
Conclusion: I. All C are A. II. Some C are not A.
Ans - Here we can make conclusion, either I or either II follows.
2. Inequality It is one of the easy topics for people who are slightly comfortable
with elementary mathematics. These questions are rule-based i.e. certain
combinations of statements lead to certain conclusions.
Inequalities Golden Rules
(i) The combination between two inequalities can be established, if they have a
common term.
For ex
A>B, B>Ccombination can be easily established as:A>B>C.Here we can
make conclusion A>C or C<A
(ii) The combination between two inequalities cannot be established, if they dont
have a common term.
For ex - A>B, B<Ccombination cannot be established.(Here relationship
between A & C cannot be established.)
(iii) Complementary Pairs: (Either & or) Either and or cases only takes place in
complementary pairs. We cannot combine two elements with common elements
in which no relation is established.
For e.g.
Statement:A>B<C
Conclusion:I A>C II. A < C
Here we cannot establish relation between A and C. We can only draw conclusion
i.e. A is either greater than or equal to C or we can say A is either smaller than C.
Try to attempt 3 questions from 5 questions from this topic if other 2 questions
seems dif cult in answering.
3. Coding DecodingIn SBI POPrelims Exam it is expected that Mixed Letter
Coding types of questions can be asked in the exam.
Mixed letter coding type of questions, three or four complete messages are
given in the coded language and the code for a particular word is asked.
(i) To analyses such codes, any two messages bearing a common word are picked
up.
(ii) The common code word will mean that word.
(iii) Proceeding similarly by picking up all possible combinations of two, the entire
message can be analyzed.
4. Seating Arrangement (Circular) In Banking exams, ve questions are
frequently asked from this topic. In SBIPO Prelims it is expected that Sitting
arrangement questions can be asked in two forms -
(i) Sitting Arrangement (Circular/Square) Normal
(ii) Sitting Arrangement - Inward-Outward
Note - Normal sitting arrangement can be easily solved, if you read the questions
carefully.
For circular sitting arrangement those objects which are facing inwards to the
center are favorable to us which means LEFT-RIGHT position are same to
reference object and those objects which are facing outwards are unfavorable to
us which means LEFT-RIGHT position are opposite to reference object.
5.Linear Seating Arrangement - In linear (row) arrangement problems, we have
to arrange the data linearly. The arrangement is done only one axis and hence,
the position of people or objects assumes importance in terms of order like rst
position, second position, last position. In this type of arrangement, we take
directions according to our left and right.
In SBIPO Prelims exam it is expected that Two Row arrangementquestions
comes in exam. In two row arrangement problems, there are two groups of people
or objects sits in a two rows and people sitting in a rst row facing North or South
and vice versa.
Tips to solve Seating Arrangement (Circular / Linear) questions
1. First step is to take a quick glance on the given information and you will get an
idea of the situation of the persons.
2. Second step is to pick the useful information which is de nite information and
x the place accordingly.
Forg. A is sitting second to the left of B.
3. Do not pick the negative information in rst step. Negative information means
which information does not tell anything de nitely but it gives an idea to
eliminate a possibility. For e.g. A is not sitting on the immediate left of B. or B is
not opposite of E.
4.Left movement is called clock- wise rotation.
5.Right movement is called anti clock- wise rotation.
6. Persons sitting in a CIRCLE or RECTANGLE or SQUARE facingAWAYfrom
centre:
Seated to the left = Take Anti-clockwise direction
Seated to the right = Take clockwise direction
6. Puzzle -These may be individual or group questions from a large (almost
in nite) number of areas.
Sometimes the questions asked from the puzzle are based on oor. We have
to follow the instructions to locate the persons on different oors.
The questions can have 2 variables ( i.e. Different liking, profession)
The questions can have 3 variables ( i.e. Different liking, Profession, favorite
color)

Here we are providing one type of puzzle

Directions: Read the following information and answer the questions that
follow:
There are seven students Sintu, Sanjeev, Saket, Sandeep, Sonu, Sahil and Shyam
in an institute. Each of them has a different favorite subject, viz Quantitative
Aptitude, Reasoning Ability, Computer Science, English Language, General
Awareness, Current Affairs and Banking Awareness. Each of the students
secured different marks in his favorite subject. Saket has secured second highest
marks and neither Quantitative Aptitude nor English Language is his favorite

subject.
(/) Sonu secured the least marks and neither Current Affairs nor Reasoning
Ability is his favorite subject. The favorite subject of Sandeep is Computer Science
and he secured more marks than marks of Sanjeev and Shyam but less than the
marks of Sintu. The favorite subject of Sanjeev is General Awareness and his
marks is more than the marks of Sonu but less than the marks of Shyam. The
favorite subject of Sintu is Banking Awareness and he has not secured the highest
marks. The student whose favorite subject is English Language got the highest
marks. The favorite subject of Saket is not Reasoning Ability.
Q.) Which is the favorite subject of Sonu?
1. Quantitative Aptitude
2. Reasoning Ability
3. General Awareness
4. Data Inadequate
5. None of these

Ans: A
Important note:Meaning of and, who and adjacentin seating arrangement
(Circular/Linear)
1. If two information is joining byand, than the information is talking about the
rst person. For e.g. A is third to the left of B and second to the right of D.Here
it means A is sitting third to the left of B and also A is sitting second to the right
of D. Many students confuse here and take information as a A is sitting third to
the left of B and B is sitting second to the right of D, which is wrong.
2. If two information is joining bywho, than the information given after who is
talking about the second person. For e.g. A is third to the left of B who is second
to the right of D.Here it means A is sitting third to the left of B and B is sitting
second to the right of D.Many students confuse here and take information as a
A is sitting third to the left of B and also A is sitting second to the right of D, which
is wrong.
3. Adjacent means next to each other not opposite to each other. A and B is
adjacent to each other, which means they are immediate neighbor of each other.
