1. General Assessment Guidance

Your summative assessment for Knowledge Management and Information Systems (BMT7026) is
a Coursework submission.
The deadline for submission is 23.59 on Tuesday 16th August 2016
You are required to submit your assessment via Turnitin online access. Only submissions made
via the specified mode will be accepted and hard copies or any other digital form of submissions
(like via email or pen drive etc.) will not be accepted.
For coursework, the submission word limit is 3,500 words. You must comply with the word count
guidelines. You may submit LESS than 3,500 words but not more. Tables, diagrams,
bibliography, appendices, annex and headings are NOT included within word count calculations.
You must specify total word count on the front page of your report.
For coursework, please use font size 12 for body text and the typeface (font) should be Arial or
Times New Roman with minimum 1.5 spacing.
For headers and titles, please use font size 14. Your submission must have standard margins and
page numbers.
Please use English (UK) as your language in the submission.
Do not put your name or contact details anywhere on your submission. You should only put your
student identification number (SRN) which will ensure your submission is recognised in the
marking process.
A total of 100 marks are available for this module assessment and you are required to achieve
minimum of 50% to pass this module.
You are required to use only Harvard Referencing System in your submission. Any content which

2. Assessment Brief

PART A: Written assignment submission (Total marks = 100; Weightage = 80%)


Choose an organisation, that may be either UK-based or international, on which to base your study.
You should choose a company that you feel confident you can research and readily gain access to
information through articles, journals, newspapers and other published materials from 2006 onwards
for the purpose of this coursework.

Structure of Part A

Introduction and overview of the organisation (20 marks)

1. Compile an external overview analysis of the organisation that should include information on the
service or product offering, and their position in the business sector. You can use tools such as
PESTLE or Porters 5 forces to aid you in your analysis. You should pay particular attention to the
use of information systems and technology within the industry to engage with customers and to
manage relationships with suppliers and partners. You should also identify key technology
trends and the implications for the industry.

Evaluation of the system (45 marks)

2. Evaluate how the organisation introduced an information system (such as a CRM, or ERP) OR a
knowledge management system, to meet their business objectives and support their products or
services. You must:

I. Focus on an implementation that has taken place from 2006 onwards.


II. Use appropriate journal articles from Athens or other credible sources to support your
analysis.

The evaluation should include such areas as (but not limited to):
A clear identification and description of the system that was introduced, and when.
An analysis of the perceived benefit that would be gained by the introduction of the
system
An evaluation of the impact (positive and negative) of the system on other areas of
the business, such as customers, suppliers, staff, brand perception or global visibility
A reflection on the introduction of the system into the organisation: was it a success
or failure and why?

Recommendations for future development (25 marks)

3. Following on from your analysis of the system, consider emergent technologies or trends within
the area of information systems and knowledge management that may be appropriate for the
system you have evaluated in part 2 of the question. Provide a recommendation on how the
trend or technology could benefit the future development of the system.

Your recommendation should provide:
an explanation of the emergent technology or trend
Justification, including potential risks, for why it may be appropriate in the context
of the system you have evaluated in part 2 of your assignment.

PART B: PowerPoint presentation submission (Total marks = 100; Weightage = 20%)

4. Submission of a presentation that summarises the key points of the report above. The objective
will be to demonstrate in a business context a practical example of the role of technology in
support of KM practise. The presentation must use PowerPoint. The presentation should be a
maximum of 15 slides.
