Chapter 3

METHODS AND PROCEDURES

This Chapter presents the methods and procedures,

sampling technique, the measuring instrument, the data

gathering procedure and the statistical tools that were

used in this study.

Research Design

This study will make use the descriptive-correlation

design. This method involved the collection of data in

order to answer the questions regarding the level of

satisfaction on Marine Transportation in the University of

Cagayan Valley for School Year 2016-2017.

The technique will be used under descriptive method is

the purposive survey approach and evaluation. Questionnaire

survey will be employed to gather data in this study.

Respondents of the Study

Respondents of the study will be the Third Year Marine

Transportation students of the University of Cagayan Valley

for SY 2016-2017. There are 200 officially enrolled

students but the researchers will be using purposive

sampling to get the 75% of the actual strength of the

students enrolled for the 1st Semester of the SY 2016-2017.

Data Gathering Tool

This study will employ survey questionnaire to assess

the level of satisfaction of the respondents in the Marine

Transportation. Part of it will be patterned from the study

of De Leon (2012) entitled Satisfaction Level of Maritime

Schools in the Philippines and will be revised to suit the

present study.

The survey questionnaire will be divided of the

following.

Part 1 of the questionnaire determines the profile of

the respondents.

Part 2 of the questionnaire determines the level of

satisfaction of the respondents in the Marine

Transportation in terms of the Maritime Instructors,

Maritime Facilities and Maritime Training Program.

Part 3 of the questionnaire proposes actions to

improve the quality of maritime education.

A modified Likerts scale will be employed for the

purpose of determining the degree of responses of the

respondents.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will make use of different procedures

in gathering the necessary data for the study. The

following procedures will be undertaken:

The researchers will write a letter of permission

address to the President of the University of Cagayan

Valley thru his Vice President for Academic Affairs to be

noted by the Academic Dean for the conduct of the study.

Upon approval, the researchers will have to schedule a

time to conduct the data collection.

The respondents will be given letter of intent about

the survey to inform the respondents about the study and

asked voluntarily to join the survey. This will be given

individually to the selected respondents.

Upon approval, the researchers will be distributed the

questionnaire. The researchers will distribute the survey

questionnaires to the respondents. After the respondents

will ask to answer and return the questionnaires.

The data gathered will be tabulated, analyzed and

interpreted.

Statistical Tool

In analyzing the data that will be obtained via the

administration of survey questionnaire, the data on profile

of the respondents will be analyzed using frequency count

and percentage distribution.

On the other hand, the data that will be derived from

the level of satisfaction of the respondents in the Marine

Transportation in terms of the Maritime Instructors,

Maritime Facilities and Maritime Training Program will be

analyzed using weighted mean.

Weighted mean will be further interpreted using the

Likerts scale below.

Numerical Value Descriptive Value Descriptive Value

3 2.34 -3.00 Very much
2 1.67 2.33 Much
1 1.0 - 1.66 Not at all

Furthermore, Statistical Package for Social Sciences,

Version 16.0 will be used to run the descriptive

statistics, independent samples t-test and regression

analysis.

Pearson (r) will be used to test significance level

between the level of satisfaction of the respondents in the

Marine Transportation assessed by themselves in terms of

the above dimensions, and test significance level between

the level of satisfaction of the respondents in the Marine

Transportation and their profile variables.
