Topic-2
Countrys first Sunken museum at Humayuns Tomb Delhi
Background:

The plan envisages a sunken museum that will be constructed below the current
parking lot outside the Humayuns Tomb and will have underground passages linking
the three sites. The proposed building will offer visitors to the World Heritage Site a
more informed experience through historic nuggets in writing to exhibits, archival
pictures and even craft demonstrations.
Restore and revitalize the areas around Humayun's Tomb, the Aga Khan Trust for
Culture and its partners will begin construction on a site museum and visitor's centre
in Delhi.
The need for a museum and visitor centre at this world heritage site became apparent
in recent years. Two million people visit the Humayuns Tomb complex annually,
including over 500,000 children. An even larger number of pilgrims from across the
world and of many faiths visit the adjoining Dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya,
the 16th century tomb. In response to the dramatic increase in visitors, AKTC
(Aga Khan Trust for Culture) will construct a state-of-the-art site museum at the
entrance to Humayun`s Tomb.
Objectives:

The Museums aims include a better understanding of Mughal architecture, its

associated building craft traditions, and the development of the Nizamuddin areas
pluralist cultural traditions, which defined Hindustani culture.
Site Information:
Situating the Museum at the entrance zone of the Sundar Nursery and Humayuns
Tomb Complex, just off Mathura Road and Lodhi Road, allows vehicular access on an
