Happy early Valentines Day!

Its crazy how fast February is going but with each day I
see great progress from our third grade class!

In LA, we are exploring a play this week that is based on a

Mowak myth. Students will be learning about the various text
features such as stage directions and dialogue. Students will be
applying their past knowledge of story structure to understand
the story structure of the play. Students will also be working on
summarizing. We also dove back into Lit circles. Each student
was placed in a group that had a different type of mystery
story. Students are blowing my socks off with the amazing
connections we have made so far with the stories! One skill
that is a little hard is the skill of making a thick question. A
thick question is a question that prompts discussions within the
groups; students are encouraged to think of questions that go
past the who, what, and when in the story and think of
questions that may not have just one right answer. We will be
continuing our Lit circles this week and wrapping them up on
Monday. Students are pumped to get their topic for their
persuasive piece. I certainly know that students will have
amazing papers based on their excitement to get going! We
reviewed the verb be last week and will now be learning about
verbs that have irregular tenses in the past. In phonics we are
focusing on words that make the same vowel sound as spoon
and wood. This week students will have an opportunity to work
on their spelling grid in class so they may bring it back and
forth between home and school. Students are still encouraged
to practice their spelling words at home even if they have
completed their spelling grid.

In Math, we are continuing to learn about multiplication

strategy. I have sent some notes home over the remind app to
help parents get an idea of the strategies we have learned in
class and how to use them. This week students will also begin
to learn about multi-step multiplication number stories,
parentheses in number sentences, and order of operations. Be
sure to keep up with the remind app, which is where I will send
home math notes of what we did for the day when students
are introduced to new topics!

In Religion, we learned about the 4 marks of the church.

We played a guessing game to help us understand the various
people and roles of our Church community. We also learned
about Peter, who was chosen as the first leader of the church.
We will be beginning our next session tomorrow.

In Science, students learned about matter. We learned about

the three states of matter and physical traits to describe them.
Students also began to learn about physical changes. We
reviewed how physical changes only affect the look of the
matter and not the particles that make up the matter. This
week we will explore chemical changes before moving on to
force and motion.

We also have a special guest in our classroom! LTHS has a

wonderful teacher intern program that helps match seniors
who are interested in pursuing teaching with teachers so they
can gain classroom experience before starting college. Ms. I will
be our teaching intern and helping out in the afternoon in our
classroom. The students are so excited to have someone else
to share their learning adventure with!
