The Honors College is co-sponsoring a very im-
portant event a week from today, along with the Call
Me Mister Program and the Office of Inclusion and
Equity, we'll be showing the documentary film
Rosenwald. The film will be followed by a panel dis-
cussion.
In the early 20th century, the African American lead-
er and educator Booker T. Washington collaborated
with a Jewish businessman and philanthropist named
Julius Rosenwald to construct more than 5000
schools for black children in the American South, in-
cluding in Upstate South Carolina. Among those who
attended these "Rosenwald schools" were Congress-
man John Lewis, Oprah Winfrey, Julian Bond, Spike
Lee, and Maya Angelou.
Please plan to join us next Monday, February
20th at 7pm in the Self Auditorium of the Strom
Thurmond Center to view and discuss this im-
portant film. Among the panelists who will be partic-
ipating in the panel discussion are:
Peter Ascoli: Historian and Mr. Rosenwalds
grandson; author of Julius Rosenwald: The
Man Who Built Sears, Roebuck and Advanced
the Cause of Black Education in the American
South
Aretta Jenkins: Oral Historian, Co-Author
of Call Me MiSTER: The Re-Emergence of Afri-
can American Male Teachers in South Carolina
The Rev. William E. Cureton: President,
Seneca River Missionary Baptist Association,
who attended the Shiloh (Queensdale) Ele-
mentary (Rosenwald) School
Keith Wilkes, Social Studies teacher at West
-Oak Middle School in Westminster, who was
among the first children to integrate West-
minster elementary school and whose parents
attended Pleasant Hill (Rosenwald) School.
Now more than ever, collaboration -- such as that
between Washington and Rosenwald -- is needed to
find solutions to community problems. Mark your cal-
endars now to attend this event. We hope to see you
there. Dr. Lasser
