Document: B
Facts:
1. Jamestown had drought very often.
a. Droughts lead to the river not over-filling. When the river over-filled it was from the rainfall
which was used for fresh drinking water. This could keep many from dieing leaving the
Jamestown settlers from losing a big chunk of their population by the year.
2. Rainfall wasnt rare but not very often either.
a. Dehydration was very possible for the current settlers because of rainfall being not often
enough to keep the river over-filled.
3. Most of the time when there was rainfall there was lots of rain.
a. When with the lots of rain it wasnt enough to last the year. When droughts occurred they
lasted a long time. Jamestown settlers were vulnerable causing death ranging in large amounts.
Document: C
Facts:
1. Jamestown only got shipments of males.
a. The Jamestown settlers had no women to reproduce which also could lead to many of the
Jamestown settlers dieing in a small amount of time. From this the shipment would have to be
more often because the settlers wouldnt have any young men to help.
2. The amount of men was unsustainable compared to the amount of women.
a. The amount of men was because they needed men to build houses and buildings.
3. They sent more gentlemen than any other type of men on the shipments.
a. They wanted the gentlemen to acquire women from other settlements.

Attention Grabber:
Claim: Many of the Jamestown colonists died due a myriad of poor decisions, which
affected their water supply, relationship with the Natives, and the motivation of the settlers
themselves.
Roadmap: A large amount of settlers died from the location of the settlement,
mistreatment of the Native Americans, and the lack of resources brought with them.
Intro: The settlers choices were poor enough to cause the deaths of
many of them. For example from document E 11 settlers died from a boating accident,
which is a great example of them making poor decisions.
Reason 1: Although, the settlers made the poor choice of deciding on what location to settle.
Evidence: Settlers died from the poor decision of location which consisted of the water
being brackish. When they settled in Jamestown they used the water as a bathroom. This was a
poor choice because the water didnt flow into a ocean or even a large lake. From this it caused
the water to become dirty and grow bacteria, which when the settlers drank the water they got
sick. (Doc A) Relating to this they made the poor choice of settling in this location, but in some
sort has very low food supply. The fish in the stream were also getting sick due to the dirty
brackish water. Fish in this stream were getting contaminated with illness that were deadly. (Doc
A) From document B, the graph shows that the location of the settlers had droughts very often.
This is one of the causes to the water not being clean and the settlers getting sick.
Justification: Them not having good water and killing off the fish they lacked of
picking the location. The climate didnt have a bigger body of water, which lead to them not
keeping fresh water to drink but also used the fresh water as a bathroom. These poor choices
made many die.
Reason 2: Poor choice of mistreating the Native Americans.
Evidence: Outnumbered the English by a significant margin. They werent very willing
with the English. They mistreated them, such as killing them and forcing them to give them
favorable trade terms. Animosity between the two grew, and when the English really needed
their help during the starving times, they instead sieged them, which they let them die. Francis
West stole corn and food from the Native Americans. His mistreatment made the Natives
hesitant in giving help to the English during the Starving Times leading to thousands of deaths.
(Doc D) The mistreatment of the Native Americans allowed them to not have a trading system,
so this lead to them not have a stable food supply leaving many to die from starvation. The
settlers didnt know how to grow crop as well as the Native American, but also didnt get much
rain to water the crops they grew. They could have used the stream water, that could have been
a watering supply for the crops. The water was very brackish and can also grow bacteria on the
crops, which this would have lead to even more deaths. (Doc D) Jamestown settlers mistreated
the Native Americans which also pushed them to kill some of the settlers. The amount of settlers
killed over a time period of 3 years was unsustainable. The deaths registered at 210 settlers,
which was nearly half of the settlers shipped from England. The total amount of settlers shipped
came up to 524, that consisted of only men.(Doc E)
Justification: This evidence shows that the indians and the settlers didnt get
along after. One can say that the settlers made the worse choice in their life because the indians
provided them with everything they needed.
Reason 3: They made a poor decision of not bringing enough resources to survive for very
long.
Evidence: The English didnt bring enough women with them. This led to them not
having a way of reproduction meaning there will only be grown men. This was a great idea
because men in this time period didnt know how to cook because they relied on the woman to
cook the food. (Doc C) English settlers send shipments of only men which contained anything
from a governor to not knowing what they are going to be useful for. In the first two shipments it
had multiple amounts of men in some jobs with others including 1 person, which leaves them at
risk of them dying meaning they will need 1 or more on the next shipment. For example on the
first shipment they had only 1 surgeon. This was a very poor choice because if that surgeon
died then when settlers need assistance from the surgeon their request would be useless
because they are dead. (Doc C) Another poor choice of resources wise was them bringing a lot
of crops. This was a poor decision because they didnt know how to grow crops, but also in this
settlement area there was droughts very often. The occurrence of droughts wasnt very
surprising due to the geography where they settled. When it rained the streams tide was high
which was usually low during most time periods through the years. This allowed the crops to be
watered but there was so many that the crops didnt get an even share of water leaving many to
die, also due to the fact that there was droughts oftenly. (Doc B)
Justification: This tells that the Jamestown settlers werent smart at making
good choices, which lead to many of their poor decisions. They didnt think before doing in most
cases with major costs in the future, death.
Conclusion: One can now say that the Jamestown settlers made poor choices, which is why
they didnt succeed in completing their attempt at making a settlement. Their poor decisions of
where to make the settlement, mistreating the Native Americans, and also bring the lack of
resources to fulfill the supplement for the settlement. In conclusion, the Jamestown settlers
made very poor choices, which lead to the death of many and also the attempt to succeed with
the experience of failure of the settlement.
