Research on the Formulation of Roadmap for Sediment
Management in the Brantas River Basin in 2015-2019

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)

Water Resources Existing Facilities Rehabilitation and
Capacity Improvement Project (2014-2015)
Background
1. Flood disaster occurred every year in the basin due to
riverbed agradation caused by volcanic eruptions.

2. Because of a large amount of sediment inflow and

sedimentation problem, the principal reservoirs
( Sengguruh, Wlingi and Lodoyo Reservoirs) in the basin are
rapidly losing their gross storage capacities, ranging from 30
to 50 percent of the original storage capacities

During the rainy seasons floods and landslides that occur in

various locations substantially lead to riverbank erosion.

Ministry of Public Works indicated that while Presidential

Order No. 12 of 2012 specifies about 55% of the total
domestic river shoreline of 19,710 km as the rivers that
should be protected (including the ones that had already
been protected)
Objective Result

Studying reservoir sedimentation

process that includes changes in
reservoir capacity, the volume of
sediment, reservoirs bed elevation
On-going process
changes of and sediment grain size to
promote water and reservoir
conservation for optimum reservoir and
water utilization to meet water demand.

Karangkates dam : Repair of

revetment of the spillway.
The number of groundsills
was increased (6 locations),
and consolidation dams (2
locations) and a settling pond
This project aimed to restore the

function and to ensure the
sustainability of the existing facilities as
well as to improve and strengthen the
Wlingi Dam : Construction of
operation and maintenance
a bypass channel. The
(Karangkates Dam, Wlingi Dam, Brantas
number of groundsills (8
and Porong Rivers)
locations) was increased
Recommendations are available

Brantas and Porong Rivers :

repair of revetment,
groundsills and irrigation
weirs. Siphons were
constructed.

Master Plan II (1973-1992): Report drive for selfsufficiency
on the Brantas River Basin in food production, as
Development Plan well as for flood control
and utilization of water
potential for electricity
and recreation activities

To emphasize fulfillment
of the predicted (until
