Tea plantations- Darjeeling, China

British introduced tea plantation in India and India currently holds position
of 2nd largest producer in the world after China.

Geographical conditions suitable for tea plantation:

Locational factors:
1. Tea plantation needs a hot and moist climate.
2. Tea is mainly grown in tropical and subtropical region at high altitude
generally above 1000 meters.
3. It requires a cool moist climate and well-drained soil rich in humus,
mixed with lime and iron.
4. Needs hilly terrain and abundant water as well.

Labor related:
1. From production to packaging it needs skilled labor in grading,
manure, plucking which is abundant in India
2. Since tea plantation has to be grown in hilly terrain mechanization is
not possible unlike other crops

Tea plantations in India:


1. Important locations in India are Assam, Darjeeling hills, Bengal,
T.Nadu,Kerala, Himachal Pradesh etc.
2. India has mainly been known to the produce black tea.

Tea: Darjeeling:
1. Darjeeling tea is a tea from the Darjeeling district in West Bengal,
India.
2. Tea plantation was started during the British period
3. It is available in black, green, white and oolong flavors.
4. The unusual mixture of soil, altitude, sunshine, rainfall and the
character of the people help Darjeeling produce the most fragrant
of teas.
5. soil has good quantity of phosphorous, potash gives special flavor
to Darjeeling Tea
6. Darjeeling tea has good local and foreign demand. Due to its
proximity to Kolkata is one of the advantage

Tea: China:
1. History of Tea cultivation in china is long and complex
2. China is the biggest producer of tea and supplies nearly 29 percent of
the worlds total tea requirements
3. Due to the availability of summer monsoons and hill terrains it is good
for tea plantation.
4. Since tea plantation is grown and used since ancient times people
are skilled at growing tea.
