New macbook thread

Alright /g/uise, what's the deal with this thing. Is the battery actually up to nine hours? I've heard SO many fucking conflicting
reviews about how long it lasts and the overall performance of this thing. thought?

Depends on what you do with it
normies probably can't understand so they write bad reviews when it gives less than 9 hours

Anonymous 07/08/15(Wed)21:03:43 No.48912256

It only lasts long if it is in idle.

so sexy tho :)))))

Yea usually lasts upto 8 hours for me on moderate brightness

It gets 5-6 hours with normal use. They battery meter might say 9-10 hours but in reality it never gets that much unless you're doing
absolutely nothing and sitting on the desktop. El Capitan might improve the battery a bit.

what do you do on it though? like do you get 8 hours of a word processor or what?

The keyboard allows you to type lightning fast but it gets uncomfortable real quick because there's almost no give in the keys.

dunno about 9 hours, but my 13'' rMBP is fantastic. is that an Air or what?

At the end of the day it's just a slightly better laptop than a lenovo or whatever. but slightly better in numerous ways. Display, build materials,
OS (debatable... but having a proper shell is great if you're a coder), hardiness and durability, general performance e.g. heat

As a workstation? Not even once.

>Is the battery actually up to nine hours?
No that's marketing bull. If you make the screen real dark, and are only typing it will last you around 6 hours. Battery life will decrease with
heaver use, like browsing not including videos. Apple makes it annoying to optimize your computer, because the only do things our way
policy, but you can turn off effects and animations which will help a little.

Anonymous 07/09/15(Thu)00:44:09 No.48915635

>>48915606
Chrome actually has a much bigger effect on battery life than all the animations combined. My 2011 MBA lasts a whole 3 hours longer when
I use Safari instead.

I got a MBPr for my birthday.

It was fun for a bit, but I returned it cause I really don't have the need for a laptop and now have over a grand to fuck around with.

The battery lasts pretty long when using it for web browsing and shit.

When I would watch streams on twitch, the battery would be kill in about 2 and a half hours.

Anonymous 07/09/15(Thu)00:51:37 No.48915743

It was designed more for business men that need to check emails, browse the web and listen to music. You can program with it but
honestly just go for an air.

I too have been curious about the new Macbook. What I'm most curious about is, how well does it handle Steam In-Home Streaming? Also,
I've heard sporadic reports of overheating. How common is this? How much of an issue is it?

6 hours of typing max from my daily experience. That's still better than a lot of other laptops and I don't care what 'reviewers' say, because
they are clearly lying.

I am still running a 2009 MacBook air, and have been thinking about waiting a year or two to purchase something like the
37 KB PNG new ``MacBook.'' I really like the idea of a fan-less, ultra-portable terminal. That, alongside the moderate performance
boost and high resolution display are making this device quite attractive to me. I plan on doing the usual (programming,
watching media in mpv, browsing the web, using programs, posting on usenet newsgroups), so I think it should have more than enough
power. I don't play games anymore, and don't really see myself needing a high-end computer for video editing or anything like that. The most
I use is GIMP for some personal projects, but that's not too CPU-instensive. Very, very tempting. The new tech in it seems interesting too
(force touch/keyboard/all that jazz). Hopefully I can get myself over to the apple store in the next few weeks to try it out (I'll have to, as I have
been bridging my iPhone wifi connection to my MBA as my wifi card died a few weeks ago.)

You can program your shitty python or java programs you will write in class for the first two years on anything. You can do it on a 10 year old
machine if you wanted to. It only gets more interesting when you start pushing the hardware to the limit, taking advantage of architecture
specific vector instructions like avx for super computing (which broadwell in that macbook supports) or graphics (which is shit, like what 4
EUs?) otherwise even for pure research it doesn't matter cause you'll probably get access to a beast machine if you need it.

Interesting. Some of my family members have brand new rMBP's. I tried out their keyboards, and found them much flimsier feeling than my
2009 MBA. Perhaps they just haven't been ``broken in'' enough? These feel firm but responsive. When I type on the rMBP ones, they feel
cheaper somehow. Doesn't really make much sense to me. This is why I really want to try out the new MacBook. Also, I think the space
grey color is sexy on a laptop.
>>48917471
This. I never really do serious programming on my laptop ever anymore, since most of my programs require running an emulator (Android
as of late) or running graphically intensive 3d-applications (like for my game engine design course I took last semester in which we utilized
Ogre3d/Bullet APIs/Blender in C++ for game programming). We are given access to 30+ top of the line workstations running Xubuntu. Hell
even if I need to use my laptop for that, I'll just use it as a terminal for the school workstations. Forwarding my X session to XQuartz is more
than perfect for my needs.
