CVEEN 3410 Hydraulics

Fall 2016
Homework Assignment #9

Assigned: November 07, 2016

Due Date: November 21, 2016
Points: 25

Problem Topic
1. For the centrifugal pump performance curve shown in Pump
(1.0 pts) Appendix A, list the total head and capacity at which the Performance
pump will operate at maximum efficiency for each of the Curve
impeller sizes shown.
2. Determine the NPSH available when a pump draws gasoline NPSH
(2.0 pts) at 110oF (sg = 0.65) from an outside storage tank whose Available
level is 4.8 ft above the pump inlet. The energy losses in the
suction line total 0.87 ft and the atmospheric pressure is
14.28 psia.
3. The system shown in Appendix B is to be designed for a Pump
(11 pts) flow rate of 50 gpm, with air in the tank pressurized to 40 Selection
psig. Select a suitable pump for this application (from
Figures 13.28-13.34) and complete the summary
information found in Appendix C. Include minor losses due
to bends, the entrance loss from the water source on the
suction side of the pump and exit loss as water discharges to
the tank. Use the Hazen-Williams Equation to solve head
loss in the pipes.

The temperature of the water is 60oF and the cabin elevation

is at approximately 5000 ft. The pipe length on the
discharge side is 225 ft and both elbows in this section are
45o. The pipe length on the suction side of the pump is 8 ft
and the elbow is 90o. Include the exit loss into the tank on
the discharge side of the pump and the entrance loss into the
suction pipe in your calculations.
4. The system shown in Appendix D has a pump at elevation Pump
(11 pts) 215.00 ft with a 4-inch diameter PVC discharge pipe 450 ft Selection
long and a 6-inch diameter steel suction pipe 400 ft long.
Assume given pipe diameters are internal diameters. The
suction pipe is connected to a tank with a water surface
elevation of 240.00 ft under a pressure of 4 psi. The
discharge line is connected to a tank with a water surface
elevation of 145.00 ft under a pressure of 57 psi. A pressure
drop of 4 psi occurs across the filter. Neglect all other
minor losses. The fluid is water at 70oF. Use the Hazen-
Williams Equation to solve head loss in the pipes.

Bell & Gossett: (http://bellgossett.com/selection-sizing-

cad-tools/) use close-coupled, in-line 60-Hz centrifugal
pump. Registration is required.

Registration is required.
Any other of your choice. A web search will turn up
many sites. Most sites require registration. You must
reference your source for the pump selection.

Generate the pump curve for the pump type you select. In
order to print out the curve you might want to right click on
the pump curve and select Save Image as. For future
reference be sure to note that most pump vendors have some
type of pump selection software on the Internet, which can
guide you to an appropriate pump

Design the system for a minimum acceptable flow of 475

gallons per minute. Complete the summary table found in
Appendix E.
