Americas favorite food -- pizza

Pizza has become America's favorite food over the past 50 years. Millions of pizza pies are
eaten daily, but do the people eating the food know its history?
The common belief is that Italians invented pizza. However, its origins go back to ancient
times. It is known that ancient Middle Eastern cultures ate flat bread that had been cooked in
mud ovens. The bread was similar to pita, which is still common in Greece and the Middle
East today. It is also known that ancient Mediterranean people such as the Greeks, Romans
and Egyptians ate the bread topped and seasoned with olive oil and native spices.
The pizza we know today came from Italy. In the late 1800s an Italian baker named
Raffaele Esposito created a dish for the visit of the royal couple. According to the story, King
Umberto and Queen Margherita were touring the area. In order to impress them and to show
his patriotic feelings Raffaele chose to put food on flat bread to represent the colors of Italy:
red tomato, white mozzarella cheese and green basil. The king and queen were impressed and
soon the new dish spread all over the country.
By the beginning of the 1900s, thanks to Italian immigrants, pizza had made its way to the
United States most notably New York and Chicago, due to those cities having large Italian
populations. Small cafs began offering the Italian favorite. American soldiers added to the
popularity after World War II, since many had tried it while serving on the Italian front.
Today, pizza has become just as American as baseball and apple pie. Making and selling
different kinds of pizza has become a multi-billion dollar business. Pizza is especially popular
with students on tight budgets, busy housewives and children.

Reasons for Girls to Play Sports

We all know that regular physical exercise is good for a girl's body, mind, and spirit. But you
can get exercise on your own. So why play team sports? The Women's Sports Foundation has
discovered that sports offer some extra benefits for girls in addition to having fun and getting
fit. Here are a few:
1. Girls who play sports do better in school. You might think that athletics will take up all
your study time. But research shows that girls who play sports do better in school and are
more likely to graduate than those who don't. Exercise improves learning, memory, and
concentration, which can give active girls an advantage when it comes to the classroom.
2. Girls who play sports learn teamwork. Working with coaches and teammates to win
games and meet goals is great practice for success later in life. Being a team player can
make it easier to work with others and solve problems, whether on the field or in the
workplace.
3. Sports have health benefits. Some benefits of sports are obvious like improving
fitness and maintaining a healthy weight. But girls who play sports are also less likely to
smoke and have a reduced chance of getting breast cancer later in life.
4. Playing sports builds self-confidence. Girls involved in athletics feel better about
themselves, both physically and socially. Other esteem-boosting benefits of sports
participation include getting in shape, maintaining a healthy weight, and making new
friends.
5. Exercise can cut the pressure. Pressure is a big part of life. Playing sports can help you
deal with it, since exercise is a natural mood lifter and a great way to relieve stress and
fight depression. Plus, when you are on a team you have friends who support you both on
and off the field.

SAMPLE ANSWER
Dear Ms Black,

I saw your advertisement about Conservation Work Week. I am interested in getting more
information about it, because I think forests are very important for people and I like being
outdoors.

Can you tell me where the locations will be? What kind of accommodation is provided? Are
rooms private or shared? Also, does the cost include any travel expenses?

I can take a holiday in the early autumn. Can you tell me the starting dates in September?

I can speak English, but not fluently (I am Hungarian). Is that a problem?

Yours faithfully,

Oliver Toth
