PROPELLER BETA CONTROL VALVE MAINTENANCE PRACTICES

1. General
Maintenance of the beta control valve includes instructions for removal and installation of the valve and
setting the propeller blade angle. Since the beta control valve and propeller are not engine components,
this information is limited to that which is needed for engine maintenance functions.
2. Beta Control Valve Replacement
A. Removal
(1) Remove the propeller. (Refer to the applicable airframe maintenance manual.)
(2) Disconnect the engine control linkage from the beta control rod end fitting.
(3) Remove the rod end cap, fitting, and check nut from the beta control rod (See Figure 203,
761001).
(4) Remove the beta cover from the aft side of the accessory gearbox.
(5) Apply approximately 30 lb (133 N) force to the spring retainer and remove the internal retaining
ring from the propeller mounting flange. Remove the beta valve from the forward end of the
propeller reduction gearbox.
B. Installation
(1) Remove the retaining ring from the ID of the propeller mounting flange (if installed).
(2) Loosen the check nut on the aft end of the beta valve and remove the rod end cap, rod end
fitting, and check nut (See Figure 203, 761001).
(3) Apply engine oil to the surface of the beta valve that mates with the beta valve adapter. Install
the threaded end through the beta valve adapter inside the propeller shaft. The beta valve rod
should protrude from the rear of the power and accessory gearbox.
NOTE: Approximately 30 lb (134 N) force is required to compress the beta valve springs to
install the spring retainer and retaining ring.
(4) Install the beta valve inner and outer springs inside the propeller shaft and seat against the
beta valve. Install the spring retainer in the propeller mounting flange and secure with the
retaining ring which was removed in step (1).
(5) Fit the beta valve cover over the beta valve rod and secure to the power and accessory
gearbox with six washers and selflocking nuts. Use care when installing the cover to prevent
the threads of the beta valve rod from damaging the packing between the cover plate and rod.
Tighten nuts to 7085 lb in. (7.99.6 N.m).
NOTE: Ensure that the threads in the rod end cap are fully engaged with the threads of the
beta valve rod before tightening the check nut.
(6) Install the check nut, rod end fitting and rod end cap (with packing) on the aft end of the beta
valve rod.
CAUTION: USE CARE TO PREVENT BENDING THE BETA VALVE ROD AS THE
PROPELLER IS BEING INSTALLED.
(7) Install the propeller on the propeller mounting flange. (Refer to the applicable propeller or
airframe manual.)
(8) Rig the coordinator to beta valve linkage. (Refer to Beta Control Lever, para 2.E., 761001.)
(9) Set the propeller blade angle. (Refer to Propeller Blade Angle Setting, para 1.B., 760000.)
(10) Install the spinner. (Refer to the applicable propeller or airframe manual.)

3. Beta Control Valve Checks and Adjustments

A. Establishing Initial Rigging Position
Measure and record the initial rigging position for: (1) original beta valve installations, (2) field
replacement assemblies, or (3) field replacement of individual beta valve parts as follows:
(1) Remove the propeller from the propeller mounting flange. (Refer to the applicable propeller or
airframe manual.)
(2) Remove the beta valve from the propeller gearbox. (Refer to para 2.A., this section.)
(3) Reinstall the check nut, rod end fitting, and end cap (with packing) on the aft end of the beta
control rod (See Figure 201).
(4) Push beta control rod into sleeve until it bottoms out. Install a 0.185 in. (4.70 mm) diameter
pin through the beta valve port (See Figure 201).
(5) Gently pull the beta control rod rearward until the rear face of the spool land contacts the pin
without any excessive force or slamming of parts.
(6) While holding the assembly in this position, measure the distance (dimension A, Figure 201)
between the rod end cap rear face and pin end. Record measurement as the beta valve
rigging dimension A in the Engine Assembly (white pages) InspectionMaintenanceOverhaul
Record, part IV of the Engine Log Book.
(7) Remove the pin from the beta valve port.
(8) Move spool back and forth throughout its travel to ensure operation is smooth and free from
any binding.
(9) Install the beta valve and propeller.
(10) Rig the beta control valve in accordance with Coordinator Rigging, Beta Control Lever, para
2.E., 761001.
NOTE: Refer to the aircraft manufacturers maintenance manual to determine if Dimension A
is to be used to adjust beta control tie rod length or if the alternate tie rod length
adjustment procedure is to be followed (para 2.E., 761001).
