Transgenic foods have invaded our diet. These being genetically modified have some characteristics that
are not natural and therefore present a series of questions that until now have not been clarified to the
public at large. In Colombia, agriculture represents almost 50% of our production and farmers have had to
face the challenges of world trade. Among these is dealing with transgenic seeds which has economic,
environmental, health and environmental implications.
In our country, the importation of transgenic foodstuffs has been increased, which do not comply
with a strict biosafety protocol for them, a broad letter has been given to the sale of genetically modified
seeds and there is also legalization for the protection of the same. The other side of the coin is that these
imported seeds correspond to products harvested in our country with serious consequences for the small
farmer.
Keywords: Transgenics, seeds, genetic modification, herbicides, insecticides, biodiversity, self - sterility,
food safety.
