Welcome The Dean

Remain standing to sing

ALL people that on earth do dwell, 3 O enter then his gates with praise,
Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; Approach with joy his courts unto;
Him serve with fear, Praise, laud, and bless
his praise forth tell, his name always,
Come ye before him, and rejoice. For it is seemly so to do.
Choir only
2 The Lord, ye know, is God indeed, 4 For why? The Lord our God is good:
Without our aid he did us make; His mercy is for ever sure;
We are his folk, he doth us feed, His truth at all times firmly stood,
And for his sheep he doth us take. And shall from age to age endure.

Fanfare Interlude
5 To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
The God whom heaven and earth adore,
From men and from the Angel-host
Be praise and glory evermore. Amen.
Words: William Kethe (d.1594) Tune: OLD HUNDREDTH NEH 334

Bidding Prayer The Dean

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We gather in thanksgiving and celebration, in this holy place, which tells the
story of the people of God in ancient stone and stained glass, but much more
in the living stones, the community that through the ages has worshipped
and served here.

And as we come together, to hear Gods word and sing Gods praise,
we give thanks for 300 years of creativity and commitment to serving others,
we pray for the unity of the church,
for peace in the world,
for relief of suffering,
for comfort to those who mourn;
and we remember those who have gone before us
and are built into the heavenly kingdom,
worshipping the Almighty, with saints and angels, in everlasting joy.

So let us humbly offer our prayers and praises up to the throne of Grace
in the words that our Lord Jesus Christ himself taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Psalm 48

Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised :

in the city of our God, even upon his holy hill.

The hill of Sion is a fair place, and the joy of the whole earth :
upon the north-side lieth the city of the great King;
God is well known in her palaces as a sure refuge.

For lo, the kings of the earth : are gathered, and gone by together.

They marvelled to see such things :

they were astonished, and suddenly cast down.

Fear came there upon them, and sorrow : as upon a woman in her travail.

Thou shalt break the ships of the sea : through the east-wind.

Like as we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts,
in the city of our God : God upholdeth the same for ever.

We wait for thy loving-kindness, O God : in the midst of thy temple.

O God, according to thy Name, so is thy praise unto the world's end :
thy right hand is full of righteousness.

Let the mount Sion rejoice, and the daughters of Judah be glad :
because of thy judgements.

Walk about Sion, and go round about her : and tell the towers thereof.

Mark well her bulwarks, set up her houses :

that ye may tell them that come after.

For this God is our God for ever and ever : he shall be our guide unto death.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:
world without end. Amen.

Old Testament Reading 2 Chronicles 2.1-9
(King James Version)
Read from the Quire Lectern
by the Lord Mayor of Canterbury

A reading from the Second Book of Chronicles.

And Solomon determined to build an house for the name of the Lord,
and an house for his kingdom.

And Solomon told out threescore and ten thousand men to bear burdens,
and fourscore thousand to hew in the mountain, and three thousand and
six hundred to oversee them.

And Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, As thou didst deal
with David my father, and didst send him cedars to build him an house
to dwell therein, even so deal with me.

Behold, I build an house to the name of the Lord my God, to dedicate it

to him, and to burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual
shewbread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the
sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of the Lord
our God. This is an ordinance for ever to Israel.

And the house which I build is great: for great is our God above all gods.
But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of
heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him an
house, save only to burn sacrifice before him?

Send me now therefore a man cunning to work in gold, and in silver, and
in brass, and in iron, and in purple, and crimson, and blue, and that can
skill to grave with the cunning men that are with me in Judah and in
Jerusalem, whom David my father did provide.

Send me also cedar trees, fir trees, and algum trees, out of Lebanon: for
I know that thy servants can skill to cut timber in Lebanon; and, behold,
my servants shall be with thy servants,

Even to prepare me timber in abundance: for the house which I am

about to build shall be wonderful great.

Thanks be to God.

Stand to sing

NOW thank we all our God,

With heart and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things hath done,
In whom his world rejoices;
Who from our mother's arms
Hath blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love,
And still is ours to-day.
2 O may this bounteous God
Through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts
And blessd peace to cheer us;
And keep us in his grace,
And guide us when perplexed,
And free us from all ills
In this world and the next.
3 All praise and thanks to God
The Father now be given,
The Son, and him who reigns,
With them in highest heaven,
The one eternal God,
Whom earth and heaven adore;
For thus it was, is now,
And shall be evermore.

New Testament Reading 1 Corinthians 3.10-17
(New Revised Standard Version)
Read from the Quire Lectern by Vid Calovski,
a member of the St Augustines Lodge No. 972

A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians.

According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I
laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must
choose with care how to build on it. For no one can lay any foundation
other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ.
Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones,
wood, hay, straw the work of each builder will become visible, for the
Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will
test what sort of work each has done. If what has been built on the
foundation survives, the builder will receive a reward. If the work is
burned, the builder will suffer loss; the builder will be saved, but only as
through fire.

Do you not know that you are Gods temple and that Gods Spirit dwells
in you? If anyone destroys Gods temple, God will destroy that person.
For Gods temple is holy, and you are that temple.

Thanks be to God.

The choir sings

I was glad

I was glad when they said unto me: We will go into the house of the Lord.
Our feet shall stand in thy gates: O Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is built as a city: that is at unity in itself.
O pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.
Peace be within thy walls: and plenteousness within thy palaces.

Stand to sing the hymn, during which HRH the Duke of Kent is escorted
by the Dean to the Quire

CHRIST is made the sure foundation,

Christ the Head and corner-stone,
Chosen of the Lord, and precious,
Binding all the church in one;
Holy Sion's help for ever,
And her confidence alone.
2 All that dedicated city,
Dearly loved of God on high,
In exultant jubilation
Pours perpetual melody,
God the One in Three adoring
In glad hymns eternally.
3 To this temple, where we call thee,
Come, O Lord of Hosts, today;
With thy wonted loving-kindness
Hear thy servants as they pray,
And thy fullest benediction
Shed within its walls alway.
4 Many a blow and biting sculpture
Polished well those stones elect,
In their places now compacted
By the heavenly Architect,
Who therewith hath willed for ever
That his palace should be decked.
5 Laud and honour to the Father,
Laud and honour to the Son,
Laud and honour to the Spirit,
Ever Three, and ever One,
Consubstantial, co-eternal,
While unending ages run.

The Prayers led by the Archdeacon of Canterbury

Almighty God,
our rock and our salvation;
be to us a strong tower in times of trouble
and grant us grace to serve and protect the vulnerable,
that through faith in you and love for your people,
we may be drawn ever closer into your kingdom,
and may see the heavenly city, the new Jerusalem;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Almighty and everliving God,

who, though the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee,
much less a house made with hands,
yet hast promised to be present
wherever two or three are gathered together in thy name:
Visit, we beseech thee, with thy heavenly benediction
this place of pilgrimage and worship, of prayer and praise,
built for thine honour and glory;
and because holiness becometh thine house for ever,
sanctify with thy abiding presence
the lives of all who worship thee here;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

O Lord our Governor,

we humbly pray thee to look with thy favour
upon us and to visit us with thy salvation.
Graciously bless thy servant Her Majesty the Queen,
His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent,
every member of the royal family,
and all who bear office throughout this realm.
Prosper the work of thy Church in this and every land;
and so turn the hearts of all people to thyself
that thy name may be exalted among us as our mighty God and Saviour;
for the glory of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

8
All then say The General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy

servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all
thy goodness and loving kindness to us and to all people.
We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the
blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in
the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the
means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies,
that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we may
shew forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives;
by giving up ourselves to thy service, and by walking before
thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of our life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy
Ghost be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

Sit as the choir sings

How lovely are thy dwellings

How lovely are Thy dwellings fair, O Lord of Hosts,

My soul ever longeth and fainteth sore for the blessed courts of the Lord;
My heart and flesh do cry unto God, cry to the living God.
Blest are they that in Thy house are dwelling,
They ever praise Thee, O Lord, for ever more.
How lovely are Thy dwellings fair.

Words: Psalm 84.1,2,4 Music: Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

The Grace led by the Dean

As we go from this your house, Lord God,

we offer ourselves and those for whom we pray
to your care and protection.

We say together
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit
be with us all evermore.
Amen.

Stand to sing

PRAISE to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation;

O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation:
Come ye who hear,
Brothers and sisters draw near;
Praise him in glad adoration.

2 Praise to the Lord, who over all things so wondrously reigneth,

Shelters thee under his wings, yea, so gently sustaineth:
Hast thou not seen
All that is needful hath been
Granted in what he ordaineth?

3 Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
Surely his goodness and mercy here daily attend thee;
Ponder anew
All the Almighty can do,
He who with love doth befriend thee.

4 Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!

All that hath life and breath come now with praises before him!
Let the Amen
Sound from his people again:
Gladly for ay we adore him.
