7.2 million tonnes of hazardous waste
One Sq. km of additional landfill area every-year
Rs 1600 crore for treatment & disposal of these wastes
In addition to this industries discharge about 150 million tonnes of high volume low
hazard waste every year, which is mostly dumped on open low lying land areas.

Growth of Solid Waste In India
Waste is growing by leaps & bounds
In 1981-91, population of Mumbai increased from 8.2 million to 12.3 million
During the same period, municipal solid waste has grown from 3200 tonnes to 5355
tonne, an increase of 67%
Waste collection is very low for all Indian cities
City like Bangalore produces 2000 tonnes of waste per annum, the ever increasing
waste has put pressure on hygienic condition of the city

Recycling not a solution to all
problems!
Recycling is not a solution to managing every kind of waste material

For many items recycling technologies are unavailable or unsafe

In some cases, cost of recycling is too high.

Solution: More Profit With Zero Waste

Exchanging output that are considered waste

Waste of one could be input or raw material for others

Evolving a closed system- matter & energy circulate within

System was not designed to be so

The system of exchange evolved in 10 years

Current Difficulties for both
municipality and local shop keepers
Government is still doing the garbage management in silo mode without involving
actual local people (not politically active ward member or corporator) effectively.

Rules implemented overnight without letting public awareness.

Neither the DG set and Sewage Treatment Plant in Apartment Complex for waste
water being investigated. Apartment should obtain clearance certificate every year.
Department should go to each apartment to consult people and understand their
concerns. Waiting for local political party, to discuss and close issues these waste
management issue, is a waste of time.

I spoke to couple of food stall owner and when asked why dont you throw your
food plates in near by bins. They said we throw those near by market sewerage
because thats convenient to them. If they throw garbage more near to their stall
Municipality employees may ask them to remove their stall or ask for bribe or
penalize them. Its the same case most of the time. There should be persons to
liaison with these food stall owners and encourage them for proper garbage
disposal. Written/Documented by Neeraj Rath,

of different types.
Rs.50-100 to be collected from each household for waste management.
For the apartments , the society is bound to deposit to municipality

Toxic Substance and Medical Waste
We may find lot of toxic harmful
substance or poison in the thrash.
Basically we have to carefully securely
destroy.

Medical waste is primarily regulated by state environmental and health departments. EPA
does not currently have congressional authority to regulate medical waste and has not had
authority since the expiration of the Medical Waste Tracking Act (MWTA) of 1988 in 1991. It is
important to contact your state environmental program first when disposing of medical
waste. Contact your state environmental protection agency and your state health agency for

Plastic Bags for Hot food

Restaurants , road side stalls must be banned to poly bags to carry hot food.
It has several side effects in long term.

The rise in such cases is attributed largely to people eating hot food items carried in
plastic bags or boxes as they are of low quality. Whenever hot food or liquid is
packed in a plastic bag there is an exchange of toxic chemicals into the food.

Covered Drain to be built
Most of the time as municipality is not effectively doing the garbage disposal, many
household, business centres use open drains for easy garbage disposals.

Many of the drains developed to drain water and avoid stagnant water. Now its
blocked because of the these waste disposal in drains.

Malaria and dengue are among the main dangers of stagnant water, which can
become a breeding ground for the mosquitoes that transmit these diseases. Stagnant
water can be dangerous for drinking because it provides a better incubator than
running water for many kinds of bacteria and parasites.

Hence its very important to develop covered or underground drains to avoid any
development of bacteria or contaminate the soil.

Modern grinders to be deployed to grind and break the garbage available in water to
dilute and flow to the sewerage depot for further processing.

Drain to be treated using natural way
Mosquitos breeds in drains having stagnant water and due to which it has wider
contributions to increase mosquitoes in cities.

Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes include: malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, chikungunya,

yellow fever, filariasis, Japanese encephalitis, Saint Louis encephalitis, Western equine
encephalitis, Eastern equine encephalitis, Venezuelan equine encephalitis, La Crosse
encephalitis and Zika fever.

To avoid/kill mosquitos naturally, municipality should use natural products to stop mosquitos
breeding. We can manufacture Neem Oil to apply in drains and stagnant water.

Neem oil acts as a great indoor mosquito-repellent owing to its smell that wards off
mosquitoes. One can make an effective insecticide by mixing neem oil and coconut oil
qual proportion and rub it on the exposed parts of a body.

Government should encourage new entrepreneurs

It only takes a single cigarette butt to contaminate a litre of water.
Cigarette butts are the worstthey dot sidewalks, clog gutters, and soil oceans.
Now a New Jersey-based company has found a way to recycle these unwelcome

Known as the Cigarette Waste Brigade, TerraCycles effort to make recycling cigarettes

Making cigarette butt recycling not
only possible, but popular
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) around 4.5 trillion of the six trillion
cigarettes smoked every year end up in the environment, i.e. as litter. NIH estimates that
in 2011 alone there were about 110 million pounds of discarded waste from U.S. cigarette
consumptiona significant chunk of which ends up accounting for more than a third of
the nations roadside litter.

Rick Zultner, product development director for TerraCycle, recently toldWPVI-TV in New
Jersey that many cigarette filters are made of cellulose acetate, a high-grade plastic thats
also used in sunglasses.

When TerraCycle gets a bundle of used cigarettes, the filters are first sterilized and then
shredded, according to Zakes. The remaining tobacco is then composted and the
shredded filter is blended with other recycled materials and turned into usable, industrial
plastic products like shipping pallets.

Garbage Bin planning for new houses
For all new row houses or apartments , inbuilt Garbage bins placement space inside
house or flats must be mandated like we have such provisions in Singapore and
other counties where Garbage management is optimum.

Household do not have to go down to drop the garbages . Garbages bins provision
should be placed in such a way so that each household can drop the garbages from
their kitchen and Garbage collector can go to one place in the apartment location to
collect the garbage. It will reduce cost , effort to dispose/collect the garbage from the
household. All garbage bin will be connected to one common pipe through which
garbages will travel to one place by gravitation force. Details provided in pictorial

There are lot land regulations and ineffective rules because of which anyone opens the
Business unit at any place without proper regulations. There are lot of shops through
out the cities because of which effective garbage management is not at all possible or
It will cost much higher than the cost spent in a well designed planned market units.

As we have less space inside the cities and mostly owned by private parties, its difficult
to have organized planned markets. Now lets understand where we can have space all
Over cities to have planned markets and generate revenue for the municipality or
government. Most of the time when one shop rented by private party its cost is much
higher than government commercial shops. Most of the time its creating issues for the
Small business units to sustain because of high price of the rental property.
This in turn increasing the cost of the materials/goods sold which is increasing the cost
of the city life. Also there are no such effective garbage management or toilets planned

Microbeads can cause plastic particle water pollution and pose an environmental hazard
for aquatic animals in freshwater and ocean water. In the US, the Microbead-Free Waters
Act of 2015 phases out microbeads in rinse off cosmetics by July 2017.

BEAT THE MICROBEAD PLASTICS

Tiny particles of plastic have been added to thousands of personal care cosmetic products
sold around the world. These microbeadsplastics, hardly visible to the naked eye, flow
straight from the bathroom drain into the sewer system. Wastewater treatment plants are
not designed to filter them out microbeads and that is the main reason why they
contribute to the Plastic Soup swirling around the worlds oceans. Sea animals absorb or
eat microplasticsbeads. These microbeads are passed along the marine food chain. Since
humans are ultimately at the top of this food chain, it is likely that we are also ingest
them. absorbing microbeads from the food we eat. Microplasticsbeads are not
biodegradable and once they enter the marine environment, they are impossible to
remove.

the environment pollution I would like to provide details in the below section.

Properties of Plastics
The word plastic is derived from the Greek (plastikos)
meaning capable of being shaped or molded.
Plastics are a range of synthetic or semi-synthetic polymerization products that
can be molded into a permanent object having the property of plasticity.

Plastic Disadvantages
Here are some of the biggest disadvantages of plastic:

Durability Plastic is light, mouldable, sturdy, and can have countless forms, but one of the
most known features is its durability. Plastic is artificially created polymer compound which
can survive many centuries before nature is able to degrade it (some degrade into basic
ingredients and some only divide into very small pieces).

This troublesome ability of plastic doesnt have great immediate impact on our
environment, but its continuous dumping into seas and land will eventually create problems
for future generations. Even with all this durability, plastic products are not indestructible
and it cannot be used as a basic building block for everything we need.

Environmental Harm Decomposing of plastic product can last from 400 to 1000 years with
newer degradable compounds, but before that degradation can happen waste plastic will
continue to clog our waterways, oceans, forests, and other natural habitats that are filled
with animals who mistake dangerous plastic for food. Chemical dangers are also high,
because both creation and recycling of plastic produce toxic materials of many kinds.

Plastic Disadvantages
Chemical Risk Not only that creation and recycling of plastic can cause serious
environmental risk, but some of the additives that are infused in plastic can cause
permanent harm to our metabolism. Chemicals such as phthalates and BPA are
widely used as an additive that prevents degrading of plastic structure, but they
also interfere with our natural hormone levels which can cause serious problems
to both males and females (lower testosterone levels in men, and premature girl
puberty).
Choking Hazard Plastic is one of the most popular building materials for small
items. This is most evident in toy industry, where vast majority of children toys is
manufactured with plastic. These toys and small plastic objects of many uses can
easily get into childrens hands (especially babies and toddlers) that unknowingly
put them in their mouth.
Another problematic plastic product that can cause serious injuries or death are
plastic bags (grocery or trash bags)who can sometimes end up wrapped around
children faces, disrupting their breathing.

Who is Affected?
The species that is most affected is the
marine, aquatic population.

To a sea turtle, a floating plastic bag looks

like a jellyfish.

When they eat these plastics, it clogs their

intestines, and they miss out on vital
nutrients, and ultimately starve to death.

Other types of loose plastics entangle birds,

fish and mammals, making it difficult, if not
impossible to move or eat, which too leads to
their ultimate demise.

That's over 1 million plastic bags used per minute.

Scientists estimate that every square mile of ocean

contains about 46,000 pieces of floating plastic.

Plastic bags can take up to 1,000 years to break down.

At least 267 different species are known to have suffered from

entanglement or ingestion of plastic marine debris.

Only 14% of plastic water bottles are recycled.

Is It Really Harmful??
When we eat or drink things stored in plastic,
plastic is incorporated into us.
Plastic is one of the few chemical materials which
pose environmental problem.
Plastic is biologically quite inert, hence regarded to
be more an aesthetic nuisance than a hazard.
Plastic is cheap, it gets discarded easily, and, its
persistence in the environment can do great harm.
It causes immune and enzyme disorders, hormonal
disruption leading to endocrinal disorders and even
infertility and is also considered as carcinogenic
(cancer).
Not only human health, it dangerously effects
other animal life and alters the environmental (air,
water and soil) sustainability causing hazardous
pollution.

How does plastic waste impact
oceans?
Plastic is accumulating at an alarming rate in our oceans -
wreaking havoc on wildlife, polluting our beaches and
entering our food chain.

Our addiction to use-and-toss items is causing this growing

problem.

Plastic bags pose a serious danger to birds and marine

animals that often mistake them for food.

Great Pacific garbage patch
The Great Pacific garbage patch, also described as the Pacific trash vortex, is
a gyre of marine debris particles in the central North Pacific Ocean discovered between
1985 and 1988. It is located roughly between 135W to 155Wand 35N and 42N.[1] The
patch extends over an indeterminate area, with estimates ranging very widely depending
on the degree of plastic concentration used to define the affected area.

A gyre in oceanography is any large system
