your energy information

BIG RAPIDS — A business
called Direct Energy is knock-
ing on doors in Mecosta Coun-
ty, asking residents to switch
their natural gas service to its
company.
Direct Energy is a registered
third-party natural gas sup-
plier. The company offers fixed
rates on natural gas, which util-
ity companies like DTE Energy
and Michcon are not able to do
because their rates are set under
Michigan utility regulations.
Wayne McKay, a DTE Ener-
gy customer from Green Haven,
said a representative wearing a
Direct Energy name tag came
to his door Wednesday and re-
quested to see a copy of McK-
ay’s gas bill.
“He said he was there as a
courtesy of DTE, and the he
wanted to check that I was get-
ting all the right credits because
of changes in the rules,” McKay
said. “He kept saying he needed
to check the bill and what’s on
it to make sure I wasn’t being
charged too much.”
When McKay refused, the
visitor persisted, assuring McK-
ay his neighbor had just opted
into Direct Energy service.

McKay said he felt uneasy
about the person at the door,
which is why he adamantly re-
fused to show any of his person-
al information to him.
“Door-to-door (solicitation)
is not how any of the big busi-
nesses do it,” he said.
John Austerberry, a spokes-
man for DTE Energy, said McK-
ay is correct. “We don’t practice
going to customers’ homes un-
announced to discuss billing
issues,” Austerberry said. “If
we need to contact a customer
directly, a Michcon or DTE rep-
resentative would have appro-
priate identification that they
would willingly provide.”
Claire Monaghan, a spokes-
person from Direct Energy, said
it is not her company’s practice
to mislead residents. This inci-
dent is an isolated one.
“Everyone that we use goes
through stringent training.
They also have to sign a code of
conduct,” Mohaghan said. “We
have to make sure our custom-
ers feel comfortable.”
Mecosta County Undersher-
iff Todd Purcell said this is the
first incident he’s heard of in-
volving Direct Energy.
“We strongly discourage
anybody from providing per-
sonal information to anyone

they don’t know,” Purcell said.
Purcell said anyone who
feels uncomfortable by some-
one at the door, should call the
sheriff’s department immedi-
ately.
“We’d like to find out who
this person is working working
for and find out if they are le-
git,” Purcell said.
Direct Energy may be legiti-
mate, but their sales techniques
can be confusing.
An agent visits a home and
requests to see the resident’s
gas bill, then uses the informa-
tion on it to choose a locked-in
fixed rate for that resident.
Fluctuations in monthly
rates can be avoided this way,
but it also means residents are
not always getting the most
cost-effective deal.
“Consumers really need to
think through and understand
what they’re paying with their
current provider and what the
terms of the contract are,” Aus-
terberry said. “If anybody has
concerns about someone so-
liciting business from them in
this manner, they can register
a complaint with the Michigan
Public Service Commission.”
