QAPCO Interview for Welding Piping NDT

Inspector

Start at 10.00 AM. Finish at 10.50 AM

First of all I introduced myself to them.

I talk about graduation background and summary of experience.
Questions started:
1. How to control the amperage on the MIG process?
By wire feed speed.
2. If you are going to site, found one S/S joint and you say that it is overheated, what was the indication lead
you to say that?
Colouring (Black Colour).
3. What was the effect of overheating in the S/S?
Chromium carbide precipitation on the grain boundary leads to corrosion problem and may cause crack.
4. What will you do when you are going to inspect piping line before welding?
Dimension check, fit up check, bevel and bevel angle check, root face, root gap.
5. If you found a welder you expect that he uses a wrong electrode/Filler wire what is your course of action?
First of all I must be sure that he is using the wrong electrode by comparing the electrode type which is
usually written on the electrode/filler wire or in the batch / package or by manufacturing certificates along
with the WPS which suppose to be in place, then if it is wrong I will consider it as a fault and I will advise
him how to check the right electrode as per WPS, and I will advise his supervisor consequently for not to
repeated again. And if it is repeated I will take the disciplinary action against the welder. And may be I will
arrange one toolbox meeting for the welder/supervisor.
6. If you find a big problem on site what would be your course of action?
According to my duties and responsibilities, but any way I will raise the information and details to QA/QC
manager and engineering for taking a decision to raise site memo, site information, or NCR.

Inspector
7. From your CV and other questions which I asked, you are working in a managerial position for long time
most probably for the last 8 years, so would you please try to convince me that you can do the job of
inspector on site?
First of all I have to make my plan for my job daily/weekly/monthly
So I know nearly what I have to do for daily activities before start of the day
Then I have to be aware about project specification, ITPs, MS, procedures, work instruction and related
document and records
There are daily surveillance job to do on site like .Plus the RFI which were submitted by contractor
one day before..
8. What is the specification for the following Pipe line / line pipe / process piping?
API 1104 / API 5L / ASME B31.3.
9. What is the power transmission ASME code?
ASME B 31.8.
10. What is ASME I / IV / VIII talking about?
Power boiler / heating boiler / Pressure vessel.
11. What is the equivalent code in ASME talking about pipe line transportation?
ASME B 31.4.
12. What is the most restricted code in ASME?
The restriction is by fluid service like in ASME B 31.3 there are 4-categories of fluid services (Normal, D, M,
and high pressure). Also if we are talking about pressure vessel, power boiler and steam line sour service,
acoustic..this is the most restricted.
13. What about the current level II qualifications, is it by GL level III examiner?
Yes.

14. Try to categorize the NDT method from best use point of view?

RT is a permanent Record, it is used for all material all thickness, but can not detect the side lack of fusion,
caring be in place when use for the problem of radiation
UT can detect the side lack of fusion, restriction for small thickness < 8 mm and < 8, and now there are
permanent records with using of USK 50 or 25.
MT can be used for ferromagnetic material (not for S/S), can detect surface defect, and in some cases for
depth not more than 3 mm with DC current.
PT Not suitable for porous material can detect the surface defect.

15. What does it mean USK?

Krautkramer ultrasonic device Model.
16. Are you familiar with different type of materials?
Yes, I work with many different types of material like low carbon steel, low temperature carbon steel,
Chrome Moly steel, stainless steel, Duplex, Monel, Inconel, Hasatlloy C276, incoloy 800 and Cupper base
alloy.
17. What types of S/S material you deal with?
304, 304L,304H, 316, 316L, 321, 321H, 347, 347H.
18. What does it mean the letter L in 316L material?
Low carbon.
19. What its affect?
Weld ability, less sensitization effect.
20. What does it mean the letter H in 347H?
High carbon.
21. What is its effect?
Heat resistance, creep resistance (no yielding can be occurring during heating).
22. Are you having an experience in 9Cr?
Yes.

23. What is the P no. of it?

P5B

24. What is the precaution that will take place when you are dealing with 9 Cr. Material?
Preheating 150-200 deg C (according to the thickness of the specimen
Interpass temp. almost 350 deg. C max.
Dehydrogenation Related to the thickness of the specimen.
PWHT for all thickness - To around 704-730 deg. C min for 2 hours, or 2.5 thickness of the specimen.
Also caring while you welded with dissimilar, it is recommended to do buffer layer for the 9Cr. With
preheating, dehydrogenation and PWHT before start joining it with the other part.
25. What about the carbon steel, is it required PWHT?
Yes, for thickness over than 19mm
26. Is there are any case that you will do PWHT for C/S less than 19 mm?
Yes, service requirement.
27. What service?
Acoustic
28. Were you working with cement pipeline?
Yes, in CCW project.
29. How you joined?
Sleeve welded joints
30. What about the area of sleeve, how you protect that area?
Epoxy for the area of sleeve before welding.
31. Why we are doing PWHT for the 9 Cr. Materials?
Residual stress relieve, and to improve toughness.
32. How to verify the satisfaction of PWHT?
By Hardness test
33. If we have two different materials both are required PWHT, on which condition you suppose to carry on the
PWHT?
Higher PWHT temperature will be used.
