 Donald J. Trump is the 45th
President of the United States
On January 20, 2017, Donald J. Trump took the
oath of office and assumed the Presidency of the Unit-
ed States of America.
Trumps inauguration speech embedded many of
his campaign refrains as the policies his administration
would pursue. He spoke to his core supporters with
calls for nationalism and a stronger economy, assuring
them, The forgotten men and women of our country
will be forgotten no longer.
Most historians consider the speech among the
least optimistic in modern history. President Trump
did little to address the deep divisions exposed and ex-
acerbated by a highly partisan campaign.
700,000 to 900,000 people were estimated to have
attended the ceremony at the National Mall, com-
pared to 1.8 million for Obamas 2008 inauguration.
All of the living ex-Presidents except George H.W.
Bush attended. Trumps Democratic opponent, Hillary
Clinton, was also present for the ceremony.
The ceremony was preceded by a concert on Thurs-
day night and was succeeded by a parade on Saturday
afternoon.
Various forms of protest began nationwide on in-
auguration night. From violence in Washington D.C.
to speeches by Madonna and SNLs resident Trump
impersonator Alec Baldwin, activists have vowed to
meet Trump with four years of resistance.
Point Loma High School students prepared a vid-
eo, shared by the San Diego Education Association
(SDEA), in which students say that African-Ameri-
cans, the LGBT community, women, and other groups
deserve an apology.
We must speak our minds openly, debate our dis-
agreements honestly, but always pursue solidarity,
said Trump in his speech. When America is united,
America is totally unstoppable.

While cities such as Oakland are often the most obvious examples of gentri-
fication, similar trends are occurring in San Diego. Barrio Logan and a string Tract gentrified

Logan itself voted in favor of the proposal, it was not passed by 60% of San Die-
gans. Many local and environmental leaders blamed this on influence from the
shipbuilding industry and big-money lobbying. Its not a small neighborhood
issue, former San Diego mayor Jerry Sanders told voters at the time. It decides

classroom oddities. We asked Mr. Essex - now
LJHS latest Teacher of the Year - to tell us
about his quirkiest items.

I like that because it has Frankenstein, one of

my favorite novels, and Barbie, one of my least
favorite things in the world. So I was able to cut
the head off a Barbie - or I had someone do it
for me - and then attach it to Frankenstein. Its
like the yin and yang. And when you press the
little button it does a crazy little dance.

Skip the box of chocolates, this year, make your valentine an entire days
worth of yummy pink foods to show them your love!
Drinks:
Pink Hot Cocoa- 10 minutes- 2 servings
What you need:
-4c whole milk
-1 1/2 c white coco chips
-2 tsp vanilla extract
-1-2 tsp red food coloring
optional:
-whipped cream
-pink heart sprinkles
How to:
1. In a medium saucepan combine milk and white chocolate chips. Place
over low heat and cook, stirring often until the chocolate is melted and
smooth.
2. Stir in the vanilla, Add 1 tsp red food coloring. (You can add more if its
not pink enough).
Top with whipped cream and sprinkles.
Pink Smoothie- 10 minutes - 2 servings
What you need:
1 1/2c frozen strawberries
1c frozen raspberries
1 orange- peeled
1 1/2c light coconut milk
2 medium carrots, scrubbed well and chopped
1 small beet- peeled and quartered

Put all ingredients into blender and blend until smooth

What you need:
-1c flour
-2tbs sugar
-2tsp baking powder
-1 tsp salt
-1 egg- beaten
-1c milk
-2 tbsp vegetable oil

1. Mix dry ingredients in one bowl and wet in the other.
2. Pour wet into dry and mix until smooth.
3. Heat a lightly oiled griddle over medium/high heat.
4. Use a 1/4c to scoop batter onto frying pan.

Lunch:
Roasted Radishes- 35 minutes
What you need:
-2 bunches of medium radishes
-1 1/2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
-Kosher Salt
-2 tbsp unsalted butter (1/4 stick)
-1 tsp fresh lemon juice
How to:
1. Toss halved trimmed radishes on a baking sheet with olive oil,
kosher salt, and freshly ground pepper.
2. Roast at 425 until crisp-tender, about 10 minutes.
3. Toss with fresh lemon juice, room- temperature butter, and
chopped fresh herbs, then season with sea salt
Dinner:
Smoked Salmon with Alfredo Sauce - 40 minutes - 4 servings
What you need:
-1/4 onion, chopped
-1/4 cup butter
-1/2 pound smoked salmon, chopped
-1 pint heavy whipping cream
-1 tomato, diced
-2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
-ground black pepper to taste
How to:
1. Saute onion in the butter in a pan until clear.
2. Add the salmon and saute at medium to low heat for approxi-
mately 2 more minutes.
3. Very gradually, start to add the cream. Stir constantly until thick-
ened. Sauce should be very thick once you have added all the cream.
4. Top with tomato and parsley; season with pepper.
5. Add to your favorite pasta dish and enjoy.
