Career Plan
For the past four years Ive been focusing on finishing the course I took up, BS
Civil Engineering. The idea of embarking the world of Civil Engineering wasnt really
my very choice. The truth is, I havent decided what I wanted to be then. Influence from
my family and friends push me to deal with this course. Honestly, it was a challenge for
me. How I could meet their expectation and even to exceed it.
Now looking ahead at what is coming in the next month makes reality sink in. It
feels like I just started college a couple of months ago and looking for a career is years
away. Though admittedly I never envision myself to be an Engineer at first, the past
months of being a trainee in my OJT experience helped me embraced and enjoy the field
Im about to spend for most of my life. I have been able to do a lot of thinking of where I
want to start out my career and where I want it to end up down the road.
Well first, I would love to be a licensed Civil Engineer. After graduating college I
planned on having a full blown review in Cebu City as a preparation for taking up the
board exam. But regardless if a pass or fail, I have decided on staying in my hometown
and working for the government. I dont aim for any high paying jobs. I just want to have
a comfortable place to reside and a stable life.
Working with others isnt an issue on my side. Having company is something I
enjoy doing. I enjoy talking and solving problems in group settings. In general, I like to
know what is going to happen each day, but I also enjoy excitement. A little bit of both
would be the ideal job for me. I like working, I mean doing actual things and not just
sitting in the desk and typing some reports or anything particular. So I guess, working in
field or doing some actual testing of materials would be suitable for me. When it comes
to supervision, I prefer an atmosphere where there is not a lot of control and supervision.
I am the type of person who likes to get the instructions and then be left by myself or with
a group to do the assignment or task. Someday down the road if the situation arises I
wouldn't mind taking on the job of supervisor or executive.
Traveling has always been my weakness. I just cant seem to control my dizziness
when Im in the road. But if circumstances arises in which I need to travel a mile or two,
I think I can manage to overcome my fear. My leadership and language skills could be
one of my assets. I have been active in journalism and public speaking as well as being a
leader of an organization. I wouldnt mind using my experience as an advantage for any
job I would love to apply someday.
In the end, the only main goal I have in mind for now is to use all the knowledge
and skills I learned from my years of studying to help mold and improve the future.
INTRODUCTION
OJT typically means training that occurs in the workplace rather than off the job.
It is usually unplanned. Employees learn from experienced co-workers or supervisors
while they work. Such learning occurs through observation and imitation of others,
feedback about how work is done, and (less frequently) through procedures manuals and
other job-reference material. The employee can then transition into completing tasks on
her own while under supervision.
On-the-job training is vital for the development of an individual as they say
nothing beats experience. The experience of being a trainee is one thing that adds on to
the knowledge that cannot be taught but must be acted on. Its importance are often
neglected but if one could only look a little closer hell see that its worth all the efforts.
For instance, its one thing to read a job description and hear a verbal overview of
job responsibilities; its another to actually watch others or do the tasks yourself as youre
learning. On-the-job training provides new employees with real-life experience in the
field, which can make you, as an employee, more confident. Youll have a mentor close
by to help you trouble-shoot, figure out problems and explain to you why some actions
and approaches are better than others.
Sometimes a job that looks great on paper isnt what you expected it would be in
reality. You may decide you dont care for the line of work or that you dont have the
ability to effectively perform the job functions. In this case, on-the-job training can help
you determine quickly that a position is not for you. Its good for you and for your
employer to find this out sooner rather than later.
On-the-job training is often conducted by managers or experienced employees.
Getting to know these individuals while being trained can give you an insiders look at
how the company runs, and how youll fit in. Youll learn different personality types and
figure out who to talk to about work problems and how to best interact with superiors.
You can also learn tips and techniques only experienced workers know, like how to un-
jam the copy machine, who to call to get your computer fixed or whats the best thing to
eat from the sandwich cart.
A lot of things can be learned during an on-the job training. This only prove that
some things are not meant to be taught but are needed to be demonstrated. In the end of
the line the choice is still up to the trainee and the organization itself. For an
organizations that deliver a clear message and use good processes and tools can break
down the wall between what employees learn in training and what they do every day.
When learning and work then come together, the goals of training and the goals of the
organization become the same. While in the other hand, the trainee must be able to
perform well and be willing enough to learn by making himself one with the company
hes working on.
