Is Jamie Oliver a national treasure? This young exuberant chef, who left school
without any academic qualifications, burst onto British TV screens a decade ago.
He was bubbling with enthusiasm, but perhaps a little annoying.
1 Maybe this was because he seemed too much of a do-gooder: the golden boy
who liked to visit his grandma and spoke readily of his love for his wife,
Jools. 2 This is probably thanks to his willingness to receive sponsorship from one
of Britains leading supermarket chains, and his unwillingness to cook with food
not locally and organically sourced. 3 He has recently officially become Britains
bestselling author. He has defeated not only the literary efforts of authors such as
Khaled Hosseini and JK Rowling, but has also outsold those of his fellow celebrity
chefs.
4 More than a mere celebrity chef, he has become the Chosen One. He holds meetings with the
Prime Minister. He changes supermarket policy. He cooks for heads of state and Hollywood
stars.5 He has his own magazine, a website, a blog and his shows are broadcast in many countries
overseas.Oliver might still have his critics, but it appears they are seriously outnumbered these
days. 6 He is a chef who is on our side, who has used his position of powers to expose injustices
and to educate. He is a man who surely has the makings of a proper national treasure for the UK.
A: He has been criticised too for being both a hypocrite and a food snob.

B: In truth, there have been times when people really disliked Jamie Oliver.
C: Jamie Oliver has not so far regained his popularity over time.
D: Oliver still can't compete with other celebrities.
E: At last, a majority has come to recognise that he is one of the good guys.
F: Oliver is now, without doubt, the country's leading 'foodie'.
G: Sales of Oliver's latest cookbook appear to point to return to favour.
H: Today, Jamie Oliver's media influence is far-reaching.

"Unauthorized" Tom Cruise bio hits number one on Amazon.com, New York Times best
sellers list
Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography, a biography of actor Tom Cruise written by journalist
Andrew Morton, has hit the number one spot on Amazon.com's Top Sellers list and The New York
Times Best Sellers list.

Morton's book was published January 15, and hit number one on Amazon.com's Top Sellers list on
January 18. Yesterday, the book hit the number one spot on The New York Times Best Sellers list.
The book is not for sale in Britain or Ireland, and the New York Post has reported that British tourists
to the United States are buying copies of the book to bring back home. Morton makes some
controversial assertions in the book, including that Cruise is second in command at the Church of
Scientology, and that Scientology was the cause of Cruise and Nicole Kidman's separation.

(1) _____
Cruise has threatened a USD$100 million lawsuit against Morton and the book's publisher, St.
Martin's Press. The Church of Scientology also responded to Morton's claims in the book. In a 15-
page statement, the Church called the book "bigoted" and a "defamatory assault," and said that
Cruise "holds no official or unofficial position in the Church hierarchy."

(2) _____
When asked if he had attempted to interview Cruise for the book, Morton said "I asked Tom for an
interview and he declined." In response to a statement released by Cruise's publicists that he had
not interviewed "one person who has known or worked with Tom" in the past twenty-five years,
Morton responded "I interviewed everyone from scriptwriters to producers to actors to actresses to
teachers to girlfriends to pupils to Scientologists to people who have audited him." When
questioned about his assertion that Cruise is "second in command" of the Church of Scientology,
Morton stated "Scientology would be a shadow of what it is today if it had not been for the
involvement of Tom Cruise."

(3) _____
A review in the Chicago Tribune was also critical, and Teresa Budasi wrote "If you read Andrew
Mortons unauthorized biography of Tom Cruise with a fans curiosity in one hand and a thinking
persons skepticism in the other, youll likely end up in the same place you were before you read it:
not all that interested." In his review of the book, Dave Shiflett of The Wall Street Journal
commented on the litigious nature of the Church of Scientology, writing "Mr. Morton, apparently
unfazed by the reputation of the group's notoriously hair-triggered legal department, leaves few
stones unhurled."

(4) _____
After the Church of Scientology sent a legal complaint to the online video-sharing website YouTube,
the video was taken down from that site, but is available on Gawker.com. A group of Internet users
calling themselves "Anonymous" subsequently announced a "War on Scientology" including denial-
of-service attacks against the Church of Scientology's main websites. Andreas Heldal-Lund, founder
of the Scientology-critical site and Norway-based non-profit organization Operation Clambake
released a statement on Tuesday critical of the actions of the "Anonymous" group, saying that the
Church of Scientology deserves the right to freedom of speech.

(5) _____
Other Hollywood acquaintances of Cruise, including comedians Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller,
released statements defending Cruise and criticizing those who have mocked him for his beliefs.
Sandler stated "To see anyones private life invaded and mocked like this is sickening," and Stiller
commented "People lose sight of the fact that Tom Cruise is actually a person. I feel for him."

A. Cruise's attorney, Bertram Fields released a statement which said that the book was
"absolutely loaded with false statements."

B. NO Actor Jerry O'Connell, who had previously acted alongside Cruise in the 1996 film Jerry
Maguire, produced a parody of the Cruise video which was released on Wednesday.

C. ? Janet Maslin of The New York Times wrote that parts of the book "push the limits of
responsible reporting."

D. ? Several news agencies have tried to contact Cruise but he was unavailable for
comments.

E. ? Morton was interviewed by the Associated Press, and responded to some of the
statements made by the Church of Scientology.

F. ? Shortly before the book's publication, a video produced by the Church of Scientology
featuring Tom Cruise promoting his beliefs appeared on the Internet

Concert for peace held on Colombian-Venezuelan border

Tens of thousands of Colombians and Venezuelans attended a free concert Sunday, held on a bridge
linking the two countries. It was organized by Grammy-winning rock artist Juanes to celebrate the
end of the diplomatic crisis between Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador, and to further improve
peaceful relations within the region.
(1)_____ "It would have been much more practical and simple to do it in a city," Juanes told the
Miami Herald, "but the border is a symbol of peace between all countries. (2)_____"
Concert goers gathered in a dried-up riverbed to hear music by many notable Hispanic performers,
including Colombian singer Carlos Vives, Dominican musician Juan Luis Guerra, Spanish musicians
Miguel Bos and Alejandro Sanz, Venezuelan musician Ricardo montaner, and Ecuadorian singer
Juan Fernando Velasco.
(3)_____ "I think they all share my feelings: How can we use our music to support this, use our art
for something important?" he said.
"This is a celebration of the unity between Ecuador, Venezuela and Colombia," Carlos Vives said on
the stage. "We want our police and military officers to go home," he added, referring to the
Colombian hostages held by leftist group FARC.
FARC was the center of the recent diplomatic crisis, which began when the Colombian military
conducted an air raid against the organization inside Ecuador territory. Venezuela sided with
Ecuador in condemning Colombia for the raid, and they each moved troops to their respective
borders. (4)_____
"It's not that a song by Alejandro or Carlos is going to change people," Juanes said. "But music
becomes an excuse to send a message, that we're all here together building peace, that we are
here as citizens and this is what we want, and we have to be heard. I think the governments have
to understand and listen. (5)_____"
from Wikinews

Colombian president Alvaro Uribe had planned to attend the concert, but canceled when Juanes'
manager told him the show "was not to be a political event" and asked him not to come.

A. The crisis was ended when the nations' leaders shook hands at a summit.

B. ? Although the problems between the countries seemed very serious, no military actions
were taken by either side.

C. ? And this message is for everyone, all the countries in Latin America and the U.S. as
well.

D. ? The "Peace Without Borders" concert was staged atop the Simn Bolvar bridge, which
connects the Colombian town of Ccuta with the Venezuelan town of San Antonio del
Tchira.

E. ? We don't want to get involved in conflicts between people.

F. ? Juanes said the artists were "super responsive" when invited to perform.

Major Karl Lewis, an Air Force Reserve spokesman, says the error
resulted an "internal communications oversight" at the reserve base.

He had previously stated that the lights have been an illusion caused

by two commercial planes and the sun.

Lewis did not go further details. "What we do down there falls under

operational procedures cannot be released because of operations

True/false
Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy
The coincidences between Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy are a piece of American
folklore of unknown origin. The list of coincidences appeared in the mainstream American
press in 1964, in the wake of the 1963 John F. Kennedy assassination. Martin Gardner
debunked much of the list in an article in Scientific American, later reprinted in his book,
The Magic Numbers of Dr. Matrix. As Gardner and others have pointed out, however, it is
relatively easy to find seemingly meaningful patterns relating any two people or events,
but such patterns often do not stand up to rigorous scrutiny.
Both presidents were elected to the presidency in '60.
Both presidents were elected to the House of Representatives in '46.
Both presidents were concerned with the problems of black Americans and made their
views strongly known in '63.
Both presidents were shot in the head from behind.
Both presidents were shot in presence of their wives.
Both presidents were shot on a Friday.
Lincoln was shot at Ford's Theatre. Kennedy was shot in a Lincoln automobile, made by
Ford.
Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy who told him not to go to the theatre. Kennedy
had a secretary named Evelyn Lincoln who warned him not to go to Dallas.
Both John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald were killed before they could be put on
trial.
Booth ran from a theatre to a warehouse, Oswald ran from a warehouse to a theatre.
John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald both have 15 letters in their names.
Some of the items above are true, such as the year in which Lincoln and Kennedy were
each elected President, but this is not so unusual given that Presidential elections are
held only every four years, and both started their political careers 100 years apart. Some
of the items are simply untrue; there is no record to show that Lincoln had a secretary
named Kennedy; Lincoln's secretaries were John Hay and John G. Nicolay. The list has
inspired humorous parody, such as an item that says: "Before being killed, Lincoln was in
Monroe, Maryland, while Kennedy was in Marilyn Monroe."

The September 11 attacks also referred to as 9/11 were a series of four coordinated suicide attacks upon the
United States in New York City and the Washington, D.C. areas on September 11, 2001. On that Tuesday
morning, 19 terrorists from the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda hijacked four passenger jets. The hijackers
intentionally crashed two planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 into the Twin Towers of
the World Trade Center in New York City; both towers collapsed within two hours. Hijackers crashed American
Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth jet, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a
field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to take control before it could reach the
hijacker's intended target in Washington, D.C. Nearly 3,000 died in the attacks. Suspicion quickly fell on al-Qaeda,
and in 2004, the group's leader Osama bin Laden, who had initially denied involvement, claimed responsibility for
the attacks. The United States responded to the attacks by launching the War on Terror and invading Afghanistan
to depose the Taliban, which had harbored al-Qaeda. Many countries strengthened their anti-terrorism legislation
and expanded law enforcement powers. In May 2011, after years at large, bin Laden was found and killed. At 8:46
a.m., five hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into the World Trade Center's North Tower, and at 9:03
a.m., another five hijackers crashed United Airlines Flight 175 into the South Tower. Five hijackers flew American
Airlines Flight 77 into the The Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. A fourth flight, United Airlines Flight 93, under the control of
four hijackers, crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 10:03 a.m. after the passengers fought the hijackers.
Flight 93's ultimate target is believed to have been either the Capitol or the White House. Flight 93's cockpit voice
recorder revealed crew and passengers attempted to seize control of the plane from the hijackers after learning
through phone calls that similarly hijacked planes had been crashed into buildings that morning. Once it became
evident to the hijackers that the passengers might regain control of the plane, the hijackers rolled the plane and
intentionally crashed it. Some passengers and crew members who were able to make phone calls from the
aircraft using the cabin airphone service and mobile phones provided details that there were several hijackers
aboard each plane. Reports indicated hijackers stabbed and killed pilots, flight attendants, and one or more
passengers. In their final report, the 9/11 Commission found the hijackers had recently purchased multi-function
hand tools and assorted knives and blades. A flight attendant on Flight 11, a passenger on Flight 175, and
passengers on Flight 93 said the hijackers had bombs, but one of the passengers also said he thought the bombs
were fake. The FBI found no traces of explosives at the crash sites, and the 9/11 Commission concluded the
bombs were probably fake. The World Trade Center Complex collapsed due to structural failure. The South Tower
collapsed at 9:59 a.m. after burning for 56 minutes in a fire caused by the impact of United Airlines Flight 175. The
North Tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m. after burning for 102 minutes. The Pentagon also sustained major damage.
At 9:40 a.m., the FAA grounded all aircraft within the continental U.S., and aircraft already in flight were told to
land immediately. All international civilian aircraft were either turned back or redirected to airports in Canada or
Mexico, and all international flights were banned from landing on U.S. soil for three days. The New York City Fire
Department quickly deployed 200 units (half of the department) to the site. After the first tower collapsed, FDNY
commanders issued evacuation warnings; however, due to technical difficulties with malfunctioning radio repeater
systems, many firefighters never heard the evacuation orders. 9-1-1 dispatchers also received information from
callers that was not passed along to commanders on the scene. In the days immediately following the attacks,
many memorials were held around the world. In addition, people posted photographs of the dead and missing all
around Ground Zero. On every anniversary, in New York City, the names of the victims who died there are read
out against a background of somber music. The President of the United States also attends a memorial service at
the Pentagon.

Jack the Ripper

"Jack the Ripper" is the best-known name given to an unidentified serial killer who was active in the largely
impoverished areas in and around the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. The name originated in a letter,
written by someone claiming to be the murderer, that was disseminated in the media. The letter is widely believed
to have been a hoax, and may have been written by a journalist in a deliberate attempt to heighten interest in the
story. Attacks ascribed to the Ripper typically involved female prostitutes from the slums whose throats were cut.
The removal of internal organs from at least three of the victims led to proposals that their killer possessed
anatomical or surgical knowledge. Rumours that the murders were connected intensified in September and
October 1888, and letters from a writer or writers purporting to be the murderer were received by media outlets
and Scotland Yard. The "From Hell" letter, received by George Lusk of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee,
included half of a preserved human kidney, supposedly from one of the victims. Mainly because of the
extraordinarily brutal character of the murders, and because of media treatment of the events, the public came
increasingly to believe in a single serial killer known as "Jack the Ripper". The large number of attacks against
women in the East End during this era adds uncertainty to how many victims were killed by the same person.
Eleven separate murders, stretching from 3 April 1888 to 13 February 1891, were included in a London
Metropolitan Police Service investigation, and were known collectively in the police docket as the "Whitechapel
murders". The surviving police files on the Whitechapel murders allow a detailed view of investigative procedure
in the Victorian era. A large team of policemen conducted house-to-house inquiries throughout Whitechapel.
Forensic material was collected and examined. Suspects were identified, traced and either examined more
closely or eliminated from the inquiry. Police work follows the same pattern today. Over 2000 people were
interviewed, "upwards of 300" people were investigated, and 80 people were detained. Partly because of
dissatisfaction with the police effort, a group of volunteer citizens in London's East End called the Whitechapel
Vigilance Committee patrolled the streets looking for suspicious characters. Butchers, slaughterers, surgeons and
physicians were suspected because of the manner of the mutilations. A surviving note from Major Henry Smith,
Acting Commissioner of the City Police, indicates that the alibis of local butchers and slaughterers were
investigated, with the result that they were eliminated from the inquiry. The concentration of the killings at the

Victor learns of his brother's death, he returns to Geneva to be with his family. He sees the monster in the woods

Beefeaters

The Yeomen Warders popularly known as the Beefeaters, are ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London. In
principle they are responsible for looking after any prisoners at the Tower and safeguarding the British crown
jewels, but in practice they act as tour guides and are a tourist attraction in their own right. The name Beefeater is
of uncertain origin, with various proposed derivations. The most likely is considered to be the Warders' payment in
rations that included beef, as well as mutton and veal, and various historical commentators have noted a
preference for beef among the Warders and the Yeomen of the Guard. It is theoretically possible that these
professions enjoyed rich, hearty broths as well. The Yeomen Warders were formed in 1485 by the new king Henry
VII, the first monarch of the Tudor dynasty, and the Tudor rose, is part of the badge of the Yeomen Warders to this
day. Yeomen Warders began guarding the Tower in 1485; today there are 35 Yeomen Warders and one Chief
Warder. All warders are retired from the Armed Forces of Commonwealth realms and must be former senior non-
commissioned officers with at least 22 years of service. The Yeomen Warders normally wear an 'undress' uniform
of dark blue with red trimmings. When the sovereign visits the tower, or the warders are on duty at a state
occasion, they wear red and gold uniforms. The Yeomen Warders and their families live in tied accommodation
inside the fortress paying council taxes and a portion of their salaries for rent. They must own a home outside of
the fortress to go to when they retire. In 2007 a service woman, Moira Cameron, became the first female Yeoman
Warder in the history of the institution. The Yeoman Warder Ravenmaster (also known as the Ravenmaster for
short) is one of the Yeomen Warders who has the responsibility to maintain the welfare of the ravens of the Tower
of London. The ravens are fed raw meat. It is believed Ravens have been living in the Tower of London since at
least the time of King Charles II and legend maintains that should these ravens ever leave the tower, the tower
and the monarchy will crumble. In order to prevent the ravens from flying away, their flight feathers are trimmed,
so that they cannot fly in a straight line for any appreciable distance. The ravens are free, however, to roam the
tower grounds. The warders comment that the "real beefeaters" at the Tower of London are the Ravens, which
receive a daily ration of beef.
