This is a textbook on an increasingly recognised modality used in medical and therapeutic settings. The
author argues that clinical hypnosis offers an effective and potentially low cost way to deal with many bad
habits and problems, such as smoking, fears and phobias. She claims that successful self-management
techniques for, among others, pain and skin conditions can be a means of enhancing a client's positive
behaviours and thoughts, and increasing their self esteem.
Hypnosis has always captured the attention of some of the most creative thinkers in the field of
psychology. Today, hypnosis and hypnotic phenomena are in the mainstream of clinical, cognitive, and
social psychology, and practitioners can benefit from a wealth of research to guide their interventions.
In this second edition of the landmark Handbook of Clinical Hypnosis, editors Steven Jay Lynn, Judith
Rhue, and Irving Kirsch have undertaken a significant revision to their classic text, first published over 15
years ago. It is divided into six sections:
- Foundations and General Considerations, which includes chapters on the history of hypnosis and
assessment of hypnotizability
- Theories of Hypnosis, in which hypnosis is examined within the context of various therapeutic constructs
- Hypnotic Techniques, which includes a how-to primer for therapists to conduct hypnotic sessions, and
chapters about increasing suggestibility and integrating hypnosis with mindfulness strategies
- Treating Psychological Problems and Populations, which discusses the use of hypnosis in treating a
variety of psychological disorders
- Health and Sport Psychology, which examines hypnotic interventions for pain control, surgery, and
maximizing athletic performance
- Issues and Extensions, which addresses, among other things, memory, education and training, and
popular and cross-cultural conceptions of hypnosis
The Handbook of Clinical Hypnosis, Second Edition is the ultimate resource for clinicians, researchers, and
anyone interested in the theory and practice of clinical hypnosis.

Hypnosis has always captured the attention of some of the most creative thinkers in the field of

1) The Ronning Guide to Modern Stage Hypnosis, by Geoff Ronning. An excelent book on starting your
own comedy hypnosis buissiness.
2) The New Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism, by Ormond McGill. A veritable tome that not only will
teach you everything you ever need to know about hypnosis, but also some stuff you may not :). A
fabulous resource, although he does harbor some more experimental views on certain hypnotic
phenomena (don't let this put you off though, just follow his instructions and it will work!)
I own both books, and cannot recommend them enough. If you are still deciding which style to adopt, I'd
recommend both. They compliment each other well.
Roy Hunter's The Art of Hypnosis: Mastering Basic Techniques is required reading on some hypnosis
courses and covers how to hypnotise, but is perhaps focused more towards therapists.
Ormond McGill's The New Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism is very comprehensive on stage hypnosis. It
gives many hypnosis techniques, but doesn't go into the basics quite as much as Roy's book.

Probably my second most quoted book is this one, and usually Ill just reference the book and tell people
to go get it. This book by Don Gibbons is an accurate and realistic portrayal of what hypnosis is and what
it isnt. He talks about how hypnosis has been associated with sleep over the years, and how
hyperempiria is actually the opposite of that, but that we use essentially the same process to get people
into both states. As a bonus for this book, you learn how to take people into hyperempiric states of
consciousness which can be very fun to play with. Im always surprised at how many hypnotists havent
even heard of hyperempiria or some of the other states that we have available to us. This is a must-
read.
Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, M.D., by John Grinder, Judith
DeLozier, and Richard Bandler
Another great book by Bandler and Grinder, this one also by Judith DeLozier, is the book that introduced
the concept of the Milton Model in NLP. If youre not familiar, Richard Bandler and John Grinder spent 9

months studying Milton Erickson and watching his videotapes. The very core essence of his patterns,
called the Milton Model, is now taught in 1 day in NLP practitioner trainings. Theres two volumes to the
series, and they are both great, although difficult to get through. Its not light reading, but I think its
time well spent. Great book.

Open to Suggestion, by Robert Temple. This was one of the first hypnosis books I got really stuck into.
Temple is a layman, a hypnosis enthusiast, who basically researches and explores various areas and
reports on them. His intrigue and enthusiasm are contagious, if youre curious about hypnosis then hes
done all the work for you. It wont teach you much about inductions but it gives a great overview of its
uses and the nature of suggestibility.
Hypnotic Realities, by Milton Erickson. Milton was studied intensely during the development of NLP but
I find his books are much richer than the distilled versions that Bandler and Grinder put out. I would
rather learn from the transcripts, and the intents behind them, than the raw, clinical language patterns
which can seem a bit pithy out of context. Ericksons works are brilliant.
Wake Up And Live, by Dorothea Brande. Not specifically about hypnosis, but a core feature of hypnosis
lies is at the apex of this book. Its an excellent and relevant wake up call to living without fear of failure, and the
positive benefits of doing so.
Findings in Hypnosis, by Dave Elman. Dave Elman was a true master he somehow had an innate
awareness for how suggestion worked and was able to wield it in really interesting ways, whilst always
being down to earth and humble about it. He covers waking suggestion, somnambulism, therapy with
ease, and has a really infectious enthusiasm.
This retro-oddity isnt a book, but a spinning hypnosis spiral. To see the blurb that was written to go along
with it, see the hypnosis spirals page here.

This book was the start of ideo-motor signalling being used as an indicator of subconscious processes.
Andrew Newton trained Paul McKenna, which means nothing really. Andrew is pretty scathing of Paul
McKenna in this book, saying that he hates his audiences. An interesting book though, very down to earth.

Self-Hypnosis
The Magic of NLP Demystified: A Pragmatic Guide to Communication and Change by Byron A.
Lewis, et al
This book by Byron Lewis does a fantastic job of breaking the utterly complex field of NLP down into
comprehendable chunks.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming: Volume I by Robert Dilts, John Grinder, Richard Bandler, and Judith
DeLozier
The book that first introduced the collected techniques called NLP. Its a very dry

book, but is essential reading once you have a firm grasp on NLP. I would not, however, recommend
reading this as your first NLP book (a mistake many make).
Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson Volume I by Richard Bandler and John
Grinder
The books that started it all, when it comes to hypnosis and NLP these are the first published works on
hypnotherapy in the infancy of NLP.

The

An excellent reference, cataloging and categorizing all of the known (at the time) patterns and techniques
under the therapeutic NLP umbrella.
Modeling
with NLP by Robert Dilts
While NLP is commonly thought of as a collection of therapeutic/sales/influence/rapport techniques,
what really made it all possible, at the center of the field, was the modelling of successful people. In this
book, Robert Dilts discusses the NLP way of acquiring skills from other peoples success.

An interesting book that looks at the structure of peoples beliefs and how we can use NLP to change
impoverished beliefs.

The other quintessential book on content reframing and context reframing, including the original six-step

Personality Selling: Using NLP and the Enneagram to Understand People and How They Are Influenced
by Albert J. Valentino
Although, I had a hard time getting into the Enneagram, which tries to pidgeonhole every person into
one of nine personality types, the first half of this book on NLP is outstanding. A great read, even if you
dont make it through the second half.
Instant
Rapport by Michael Brooks
One of the only books I know that takes NLP and applies it to something completely practical that we all

can understand. Rather than teaching NLP from a clinical perspective, Michael Brooks attacks the task
from a social perspective. If you really want to learn rapport, this is a great book for you to start.
