Goleman - What Makes a Leader


Goleman found that qualities associated with leadership such as intelligence, toughness,
determination, and vision. But, all of them is insufficient. Effective leaders are also having a high
degree in emotional intelligence such as self-awareness for understanding moods and emotion, self-
regulation for controlling disruptive impulses, motivation for passion to work, empathy for treating
people according to their emotions, and social skill for managing relationship. Researchers have
confirmed that emotional intelligence not only distinguished an outstanding leader but also resulting
in a strong performance. To enhance emotional intelligence, organizations must have focused their
training to include the limbic system in which helping people to break old behavioural habits and
making a new one.
Gabarro - Understanding Communication in One-on-One Relationship
There are three things that are necessary in anticipating and dealing with communication problems.
First, is developing awareness of other persons experience, second is knowing the concept of
assumptions, perceptions, and feelings and how a difference between people can be useful in gaining
the understanding, the third is to understand the process that blocking a good communication and
understanding in term of attitude and behaviour.
Hill - Building Effective One-on-One Relationship
Focusing on human competencies is important when we are start to advance in our careers. Not only
being able to understand the technical competencies but also the ability to do some interpersonal
work on developing effective work relationship with key individuals. We have to build a relationship
based on mutual expectations, trust and influence with other people. With different people, we can
find it more effective in building relationship because we can find and diagnose a potential barrier
that will make understanding upon the individual resulting in more mutual relationship benefit. With
good intentions in building relationship with other individual conflicts will sure to come, but with a
good thinking skills conflicts will be identified and can be resolved together. Resolving a conflict in
one on one work relationship need some simple questions to acquire other person perspective.
Gabarro & Hill Managing Performance
There are a lot of misunderstanding between the managers and their subordinates. Sometimes
subordinates think that their superiors are threats as opposed to allies in their learning and
development. Because of that, subordinates will tend to be reluctant to disclose mistakes or
shortcomings for fear they will be punished and not being helped. And, their superiors will have an
incomplete and inaccurate view of their subordinates needs. Therefore, superiors learned some
characteristics of their subordinates. Such as showing interest in their subordinates long-term and
short-term career management and development, provide autonomy for them, setting up high
attainable goals, give some problem-solving feedback, and serve them as a role models. Because of
these qualities, subordinates will trust their superiors both professional and personal support.
