complete relay should be returned to our works for repair.
1. MECHANICAL INSPECTION
4. DIRECTIONAL ELEMENT
Inspect the relay for dust and dirty or tarnished contacts.
There is no adjustment for the ES type element.
Use a blower to remove dust, and if necessary clean the
contacts using a light brush dipped in a suitable substance. 5. TEST INTERVALS

2. IDMT ELEMENT The maintenance tests required will largely depend upon site
conditions, but as a general rule it is recommended that the
The time multiplier and current settings are calibrated before following inspection and tests are performed every twelve
despatch and should not require adjustment. If for any reason months.
the relay is out of limits it may be recalibrated as follows:
Mechanical Inspection
a) The hair-spring controls the minimum operating current of Check of Connections (as required)
the relay and is adjustable. Secondary Wiring Insulation Resistance Test (as required)
Tripping Tests
b) Permanent magnet damping which controls the shape of the
characteristic at the higher current multiple is adjustable by the
steel plug above the disc.

If the relay requires resetting then the following procedure

should be followed:

Apply the required setting for the test to the relay. Set the time-
multiplier to 1.0.

Unscrew the steel plug approximately one turn.

With two times the current setting applied to the relay, adjust
the hair-spring tension to obtain an operating time as shown in
the performance claim 7.5%.

With 10 times the current setting applied to the relay, adjust the
steel plug to obtain an operating time as shown in the
performance claim 7.5%.

Both adjustments alter the characteristic, it is necessary to

check the characteristic at the various multiples of setting each
time one adjustment is changed.

Check the time at other plug settings to ensure the relay

complies with the performance specification of 7.5%.

Check the full characteristics of the relay. Ensuring that definite

operation occurs at the minimum claimed level of current
setting and that the relay resets at the claimed maximum
reseting level.

After setting the relay, the steel plug should be locked by a

suitable sealant, for example a red enamel paint such as
Humbrol, being careful to ensure no contamination of the relay.

3. HIGHSET ELEMENT

To correct the pick up value on the high-set element, turn the

setting wheel to the highest calibrated setting, apply the
nominal setting current to the element and adjust the pick up
value to within +10% limits by means of the 6BA 'Nyloc' nut.
Then check the calibration at the lowest setting; if this is
correct no further setting is required. If, however, it is not
possible to bring the whole calibration within limits, the
